The Big South Conference is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division I. Originally a non-football conference,the Big South began sponsoring football in 2002 as part of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS),and began operating the Big South–OVC Football Association in partnership with the Ohio Valley Conference in 2023. The National Football Conference –Southern Division or NFC South is one of the four divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It was created prior to the 2002 NFL season,when the league realigned divisions after expanding to 32 teams. The Red Shirts or Redshirts of the Southern United States were white supremacist paramilitary terrorist groups that were active in the late 19th century in the last years of,and after the end of,the Reconstruction era of the United States. Red Shirt groups originated in Mississippi in 1875,when anti-Reconstruction private terror units adopted red shirts to make themselves more visible and threatening to Southern Republicans,both whites and freedmen. Similar groups in the Carolinas also adopted red shirts.

Conference Carolinas,formerly known as the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) or the Carolinas Conference,is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) primarily at the Division II level. It is also considered as one of the seven Division I conferences for men's volleyball. Originally formed in 1930,the league reached its modern incarnation in 1994. Member institutions are located in the southeastern United States in the states of Georgia,North Carolina,South Carolina,and Tennessee. The Conference Carolinas membership currently consists of 14 small colleges or universities,12 private and two public.

Although there are no major league professional franchises based in South Carolina,the state does have numerous minor league teams. The Carolina Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes major league professional teams are based in neighboring North Carolina. However,the Carolina Panthers,a professional American football team of the NFL,are based near the South Carolina border,have training facilities in Spartanburg,and have shown their desire to represent both of the Carolinas,with the motto "two states,one team". Similarly,Charlotte FC,a professional men's soccer club of MLS,is also based near the border and has a primary jersey which represents both states. College teams throughout the state represent their particular South Carolina institution,along with the state being a prime destination for golf and water sports.
The 2016 United States presidential election was held on November 8,2016,as part of the 2016 General Election in which all 50 states plus the District of Columbia participated. South Carolina voters chose electors to represent them in the Electoral College via a popular vote pitting the Republican Party's nominee,businessman Donald Trump,and running mate Indiana Governor Mike Pence against Democratic Party nominee,former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her running mate,Virginia Senator Tim Kaine.
