Karnafuli Fertiliser Company or KAFCO is a joint venture multinational company located in Chittagong, Bangladesh that produces urea fertiliser from Natural Gas. It is located in Anwara upazila of Chittagong district by the side of the Karnafuli river occupying an area of 100.03 acres. [1] Its shareholders include Government of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC), and private sectors of Japan, Denmark and Netherlands. [2] It is an export oriented factory and one of two major fertilizer factories in Bangladesh. [3] [4]
Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited was incorporated in July 1981. An agreement was signed by the Government of Bangladesh, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and Haldor Topsøe to establish the plant. International Finance Corporation agreed to finance the project and as it developed the shares of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation were taken over by Haldor Topsøe. The project lacked momentum till the government of Japan agreed to finance it. Other investors included Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation, Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund of Japan, Chiyoda Corporation, Marubeni, Industrialisation Fund for Developing Countries, Stamicarbon, and Commonwealth Development Corporation. On 16 November 1994, construction of the plant was completed and operations started in December 1994. [1]

KAFCO produces about 1,500 metric tons of ammonia and 1,725 metric tons of urea per day.
The Karnaphuli River, is the largest and most important river in Chittagong and the Chittagong Hill Tracts. It is a 667-metre (2,188 ft) wide river in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh. Originating from the Saithah village of Mamit district in Mizoram, India, it flows 270 kilometres (170 mi) southwest through Chattogram Hill Tracts and Chattogram into the Bay of Bengal. Before the Padma, it was the fastest flowing river in Bangladesh. It is said to "represent the drainage system of the whole south-western part of Mizoram." Principal tributaries include the Kawrpui River or Thega River, Tuichawng River and Phairuang River. A large hydroelectric power plant was built on the Karnaphuli in the Kaptai region in the 1960s. The mouth of the river hosts the Port of Chattogram, the largest and busiest seaport of Bangladesh.

Karnaphuli Paper Mills is a Government-owned paper pulp and paper manufacturer in Chittagong, Bangladesh established in 1951 by Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation. In 1964 it was sold to Dawood Group. After the Independence of Bangladesh the company was taken over by Bangladesh Industrial Development Corporation. It is the largest paper producing factory in Bangladesh and operates as a subsidiary of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation. In 2016, it has faced criticism for not having an effluent treatment facility.

The incident of the 10-Truck Arms and Ammunition Haul took place in Chattogram, Bangladesh, on the night of 1 April 2004, when police and Coast Guard interrupted the loading of ten trucks and seized extensive illegal arms and ammunition at a jetty of Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) on the Karnaphuli River. This is believed to be the largest arms smuggling incident in the history of Bangladesh.

The Brunei Fertilizer Industries (BFI) is a government owned company and producer of ammonia and urea granular fertilizer, located in Sungai Liang Industrial Park (SPARK), Belait District, Brunei. It is claimed to be one of the largest fertilizer facilities in Southeast Asia, and has a production capacity of 1,365,000 tonnes of urea annually. The facility for BFI started being built in May 2018 and 500 jobs was expected be created when the plant is fully operating.
