Karnataka Motor Sports Club, popularly known as KMSC, is a state association for promoting and conducting motorsports in the Indian state of Karnataka. The club is based in Bengaluru. It is a founder member [1] of the Federation of Motor Sports Club of India (FMSCI), the governing body for motor sports in India. It is one of the oldest ‘active’ motorsports clubs in India. [2] It holds the record of organising the Karnataka 1000 rally (K1000 rally) continuously for the last 48 years (except for two years).

KMSC was started by a group of petrol heads, under the stewardship of Fred Webb, in 1954 under the initial name, Bangalore Motor Sports Club (BMSC). After a meeting with like-minded people including Cyril Doveton and John Webb (Fred's son) in the same year, the club was started and Fred Webb became its first president. [3] Both Webb and Junior Webb took great interest in the club motorsports activities and conducted regular drag races at Yelahanka and Jakkur air strips. [4] They also took part in other parts of the country, specially Sholavaram. Then the club played a great role in starting the Federation, FMSCI and later changed its nomen clature [1] from Bangalore Motor Sports Club to KMSC. Over the years, the Karnataka 1000 rally, which was started in 1975, became one of the flagship events of the club. It is one of the oldest rallies conducted regularly in the world. It had a break for a couple of years due to reasons beyond the club's control. [3] Other similar clubs in Karnataka are Chikmagalur Motor Sports Club, [5] Motorsports Association Of Vijayanagar, [6] [7] and Motorsports Inc [8] which have also conducted National championship rounds.

K1000 rally

The Karnataka 1000 Rally, an annual rally run on Time, Speed, Distance (TSD) format over two to three days, was started in 1975. In the early years, the K1000 ran over 1000 miles covering dirt tracks of three states, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Over the years it became a popular destination for the top motorsports rally drivers in the country. [9] In 1988, it joined the National calendar as it was included as a round in the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC). In 1996, the rally shifted to European Special Stage format in line with all other INRC rounds under the aegis of FMSCI.

The first rally run in 1975 over 1850 km of mixed roads including gravel, kutcha, tarmac, was won by a Bangalore team Sivaram, D. Vinod Sivappa, Feroze Asgar Ali and Shivprasad, Bangalore in an ambassador. Those days, there used to be four drivers as the route is long with night driving. For the last few years, the rally is being held on the dirt tracks, near Gubbi in Tumakuru district. [10] The 2022 K1000 rally was won by Karna Kadur and co-driver Nikhil Pai. It was Kadur's maiden K1000 title. [11] The 47th edition will be held in Tumakuru from 21 to 23 December 2023.

Office-bearers

Currently, KMSC is headed by Gautam Shantappa, who is also the vice-president of FMSCI, [12] [13] with Bhaskar Gupta as vice-president. The office-bearers of the club were elected on 12 November 2020. Former K1000 champion in his class, Sanjeev Shah, is elected as the new general secretary. BS Prakash became the Joint Secretary while MD Sathyavratha is the Treasurer. Former secretary, Praneet Perumal, Janardan Babu and Shanmuga are the members of the managing committee. Advocate VS Harish is co-opted as legal adviser. [14]

In the earlier years, BMSC's AD Jayaram was the FMSCI president in the year 1974–75. [15] Other FMSCI presidents from KMSC include Ravi Gupta in 1980–81, Shramik Masturlal from 1996 to 99.and R Bharat Raj in 2014–15. [15] Goutham Shanthappa is the vice-president for 2022–24. [12] Earlier, Shivu Shivappa, the then president of KMSC served as vice-president for a term of two years from 2018. [16]

Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) is a rallying Natioinal Championship in different classes with a series of rounds, organised uder the aegis of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), which is the Governing Body or ASN of India recognised by FIA culminating with National Champion Driver and Co-Driver. The driver and co-drivers's championship are based on a point system. The championship first received its National Championship Title status in 1988. Aroor Arjun Rao of Mangaluru is the reigning National champion. Supported by MRF Tyres, he drives for Mandovi Racing team in a Maruti Baleno. The 2024 National Championship begins in Chennai from 15 March 2024 with the South India Rally (SIR) which is also a round of the APRC Asia Cup.

The Motorsports Association of India (MAI) was the national sporting authority (ASN) of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) in India for a period between 2000 and 2008. It was the association responsible for the control and promotion of motorsport in India under the International Sporting Code of the FIA for a few years. The current ASN is Federation of Motor Sports Clubs in India (FMSCI). MAI was a rival body formed by Nazir Hoosein.

Nazir Hoosein was an Indian racing driver and motorsport administrator. He was the President of the Motorsports Association of India, Vice President of the FIA for Sport, chief steward of the World Rally Championship and a member of the World Motor Sport Council.

Narayanaswamy "N." Leelakrishnan, also known as Leela in Indian motorsport circles, is a six-time Indian National Rally Championship Champion and one time Indian Formula 3 champion from Coimbatore, India. He is also a rally and race car tuner and is currently the Chief Technical Director of Red Rooster Racing.

Siddaganga Intercity Express, formerly Intercity Excpress is a daily express train that runs between Dharwad and Bengaluru in Karnataka, India and it replaced Bangalore City - Hubli (Hubballi) Shatabdi Express. and until 2009, this train ran from Hubballi to Bengaluru. It was extended to Dharwad on 8 December 2009. It takes 8 hours 50 minutes to cover 490 kilometres (300 mi). It has 17 stops and 65 intermediate Stations. It is numbered as 12725/12726. The train belongs to Mysuru Division of South Western Railway.

MRF Racing is an Indian racing team that competes in car racing and rallies.

Karna Kadur is an Indian National Rally Champion. He began with road racing and also achieved immense success in Indian rallying with seven National rally titles in different classes. He won two Overall National Rally Championship victories 2016 and 2022 with Arka Motorsports. He is with Arka Motorsports and drives in MRF Tyres colours under the mentorship of N Leelakrishnan, his engineer and tuner. He is also the first driver to get a National Championship title for Volkswagen Polo along with co-driver Nikhil Pai.

Syed Asif Ali is a Bhopal based rider who competes with TVS Racing, the first factory racing team in India with a legacy of over 35 years. He has been associated with TVS Racing for over four years now and under the banner has won the Indian National Rally Championship 2W organised by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India back to back in 2015 and 2016. Additionally, he also won the treacherous Gulf Monsoon Scooter Rally and the Dakshin Dare Rally astride a TVS Wego in 2016. He secured the third place in the Gulf Monsoon Scooter Rally 2017 by completing the rally in 25.44 seconds.

Yagati Suryanarayana Venkatesha Datta or Y. S. V. Datta is an Indian politician and former member of Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Kadur seat in 2013 on the Janata Dal (Secular) ticket. Later on 14 January 2023, Datta who had earlier joined INC, reverted to JD(S) on April 13, 2023, in the presence of HD Revanna anda MP Prajwal Revanna. His return was, however, opposed by HD Kumarswamy, who left the matter to Revanna.

He received best sportsperson of the year award in the year 2019 by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs in India (FMSCI), the governing body for motorsports in India and the ASN of FIA and FIM. He has appeared in Dulquer Salmaan's Bangalore Days movie. He was Runner-up in Bigg Boss Kannada Season 8 Television Reality Show. Aravind K.P recently was a part of a National record: Mahindra XUV700 24 hours endurance challenge.

Nikhil Vittal Pai is an Indian rally co-driver who won the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) for four-wheelers twice in 2016 and 2022. He is one of the most-experienced co-drivers currently taking part in INRC for four-wheelers from 1992.

K-1000 or Karnataka 1000 is the longest running motorsports rally in India. It is the third oldest rally in the world. K1000 is the flagship annual event organised by Karnataka Motor Sports Club (KMSC), one of the founder members of FMSCI, the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India.

Arjun Balu is an Indian motorsports driver. After starting as a road racing driver in 1992, he took part in the Indian National Rally Championship for 17 years. He won 11 Championships, all in road racing and is currently racing in the Indian Touring Car (ITC) class in the MRF MMSC fmsci Indian National Car Racing Championship 2023. He is the reigning National champion in the ITC class (2022).

Chandra Kumar Chinnappa born in Bangalore is an Indian motorsports athlete and administrator. He is a racing driver and a rally co-driver. Chinnappa took part in Indian National bike races in various disciplines like rallies, autocross, motocross, hill climb and drag meets, and in later years he became a regular four-wheeler rally co-driver in the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) for an overall career spanning 34 active years as a competitor. Now he continues as a senior steward of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI).
