Dr. Kate Corrigan first appeared in The Wolves of St. August (set in May 1994) as a foil to Hellboy. She is described as a professor of history at New York University (specializing in folklore) before she joined the B.P.R.D. in 1984 as a consultant. She is said to have written sixteen books on folklore and occult history, including the confessions of Isobel Gowdie. In it, she and Hellboy investigated the mass murders in the small European village of Griart. Kate uses her extensive knowledge of folklore to deduce that the village must be St. August and that the killings are being performed by werewolves. She encounters her first ghost on this mission, as well as a werewolf that nearly kills her before being slain by Hellboy.

Folklore is the expressive body of culture shared by a particular group of people; it encompasses the traditions common to that culture, subculture or group. These include oral traditions such as tales, proverbs and jokes. They include material culture, ranging from traditional building styles to handmade toys common to the group. Folklore also includes customary lore, the forms and rituals of celebrations such as Christmas and weddings, folk dances and initiation rites. Each one of these, either singly or in combination, is considered a folklore artifact. Just as essential as the form, folklore also encompasses the transmission of these artifacts from one region to another or from one generation to the next. Folklore is not something one can typically gain in a formal school curriculum or study in the fine arts. Instead, these traditions are passed along informally from one individual to another either through verbal instruction or demonstration. The academic study of folklore is called folklore studies, and it can be explored at undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. levels.
The occult is "knowledge of the hidden" or "knowledge of the paranormal", as opposed to facts and "knowledge of the measurable", usually referred to as science. The term is sometimes taken to mean knowledge that "is meant only for certain people" or that "must be kept hidden", but for most practicing occultists it is simply the study of a deeper spiritual reality that extends pure reason and the physical sciences. The terms esoteric and arcane can also be used to describe the occult, in addition to their meanings unrelated to the supernatural.
Corrigan was promoted to a regular cast member of B.P.R.D. during the Plague of Frogs arc. In the book, she serves as the special liaison to the 'enhanced talents' agents, or those that command superhuman abilities. These include such prominent characters as Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and Johann Kraus.
Superhuman qualities are enhanced qualities that exceed those naturally found in humans.
Abraham Sapien, born Langdon Everett Caul, is a fictional character introduced in the comic book series Hellboy, created by Mike Mignola. He takes his name from "Ichthyo sapien", the fanciful species designation chosen for him by his colleagues in the 19th-century Oannes Club, and from Abraham Lincoln, on whose assassination date the Oannes Club abandoned Abe's body, leaving only a cryptic note as explanation, in a suspended animation tank beneath a Washington D.C. hospital. He is occasionally referred to as an "amphibious man."
Elizabeth Anne "Liz" Sherman is a fictional character appearing in the Hellboy comic book series created by Mike Mignola. A firestarter, she becomes a ward of the B.P.R.D. at age 11 after burning her family to death in a traumatic accident. Corrigan was the featured star of the mini-series B.P.R.D.: The Universal Machine. Seeking to restore Roger the homunculus to life, Kate was captured by an ageless marquis who wished to trade her for Roger's corpse. She was able to escape by destroying a ring belonging to King Solomon, which held the demon Marchosias in thrall. The demon razed the marquis' treasures and carried him off to Hell. Kate barely escaped with her life, her mission a failure.
Roger the Homunculus is a fictional character featured in the Hellboy and B.P.R.D. comic books published by Dark Horse Comics. He is an unusually large homunculus, a humanoid being said to be created by means of alchemy. A demon is a supernatural and often malevolent being prevalent historically in religion, occultism, literature, fiction, mythology, and folklore; as well as in media such as comics, videogames, movies and television series.
In demonology, Marchosias is a great and mighty Marquis of Hell, commanding thirty legions of demons. In the Ars Goetia, the first book of The Lesser Key of Solomon, he is depicted as a wolf with gryphon's wings and a serpent's tail, spewing fire from his mouth, but at the request of the magician he may take the form of a man. He is a strong fighter and gives true answers to all questions, and is very faithful to the magician in following his commands. Before his fall he belonged to the angelic order of Dominations, and when he was bound by Solomon he told him that after 1,200 years he hoped to return to Heaven.
Corrigan coordinates an investigation with inspector Bruno Karhu when the war on frogs brings the BPRD to Munich, Germany. Bruno asks Corrigan out on a date in the remains of a decimated Munich, beginning a long distance relationship between the two. [2] [3] Corrigan turns a mission to Austria into a date/road trip with Bruno [4] and the two stay in touch with one another via video chat. [5] [6] Moments after learning of the death of Hellboy, Carrigan receives a call from Bruno in which he ends their relationship because he feels it is "too complicated" for him. [7]
Dr. Kate Corrigan is slain during the final attack on the B.P.R.D. headquarters after the evacuation, having stayed behind to look after Panya.
