Katie Class (born March 24, 1963) is an American speed skater. [1] She competed in two events at the 1984 Winter Olympics and three events at the 1988 Winter Olympics. [2] [3] She later became a director for USA Speedskating. [4] [5]

Biography

Class was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1963, [1] and was the youngest of seven. [6] She began skating when she was five years old. [7] Class went to Morehead State University. [1] She skated on the US national team for most of the 1980s, [1] winning five medals at the World Cup and a bronze at the 1987 World Championships. [6]

Class took part at two editions of the Winter Olympics. [8] At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Class took part in the women's 500 metres and women's 1,000 metres events, [1] with her best result of tenth place in the 500 metres. [9] Four years later, at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, she took part in the 500 metres, 1,000 metres and the 1,500 metres. [1] Her best finish was eighth in 1,000 metres. [10] [11]

Class retired from competitions in 1988, and also graduated from the University of Minnesota. [6] Following her career as a speedskater, Class became the Executive Director of USA Speedskating, spending 16 years in the role. [1] She was inducted into the US Speedskating Hall of Fame in April 2009. [6] The following year, she was also inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame. [7]

She won four Olympic medals: she won two silver medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, in the 1,500 meters and team pursuit, and she won the silver medal in the 1500 m event and the bronze medal in the 3000 m event at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

She is a five-time Olympic medalist and a triple Olympic Champion, having won the 3,000m, 5,000m and mass start events at the 2022 Beijing Games. As of 12 February 2022, she holds the Olympic record in both distances. Her coach is Jillert Anema.

Erin Jackson is an American speed skater, roller derby player, and Olympic gold medalist. Jackson is the first Black woman to win a Winter Olympic gold medal in an individual sport. She qualified for The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland, where she competed in inline speed skating in various distances on road and track. She also qualified to compete in the 500 meters long track speed skating event at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Isabelle Weidemann is a Canadian speed skater. She is a multiple Olympic medallist, winning gold in the team pursuit, silver in the 5,000 metre, and bronze in the 3,000 metre at the 2022 Winter Olympics. She is the third Canadian ever to have won more than two medals at a single Winter Olympic Games following Cindy Klassen and Gaétan Boucher. Weidemann also previously won a silver and bronze medal at the 2021 and 2020 World Single Distance Championships in women's team pursuit.

Nils Göran van der Poel is a Swedish speed skater who is the current world and Olympic record holder and reigning world and Olympic champion in the 5,000 m event and the 10,000 m event.

Nathaniel Mills is an American speed skater and skating coach. He was a three-time Olympian, competing at the Winter Games in 1992 Winter Olympics, 1994 Winter Olympics and, after a three-year retirement, 1998 Winter Olympics and was captain of the U.S. Olympic speedskating team in 1998. He also competed at the 1991 World Winter Universiade where he won a bronze in the 1,000 m; at the 1989 and 1991 World Championships, placing second in the 500 in 1991, and at two World Sprint Championships, in 1991 and 1998.

Maryse Perreault is a former short track speed skater who competed on the Canadian speed skating team from 1981 to 1990. At the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships during these years, she won over twenty combined medals in individual races and the 3000 metres relay. In the overall World Championships classification, Perreault was the 1982 ladies champion and had a top three placing in 1983, 1986 and 1989. Outside of the World Championships, Perreault won bronze at the 1988 Winter Olympics in the 3000 metres relay when short track speed skating was a demonstration sport. Perreault was named to the Speed Skating Canada Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1992.
