Kathleen Naughton (born February 15, 1994) is an American professional soccer defender who plays for Houston Dash in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She played collegiate soccer for the University of Notre Dame. [1]

Club career

Youth career

Naughton played for Chicago Sockers FC during her youth, [2] and played for Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Atlantic Coast Conference, during her college years. [1] In 2012, Naughton was named to NSCAA All-Northeast Region Second Team; All-BIG EAST Third Team; BIG EAST All-Rookie Team; and was also named Notre Dame Team Most Valuable Freshman. [1]

Beginning in 2013, Naughton captained the Notre Dame Soccer Team, making her the first Notre Dame three-year captain. [1] [2] The following year, she was named to several honorary teams: All-ACC Second Team; First Team NSCAA Scholar All-North/Central Region; Third Team NSCAA Scholar All-American; NSCAA Second Team All-Southeast Region. Naughton also received Notre Dame OSCARS Francis Patrick O'Connor Award. [1]

Chicago Red Stars, 2016–2019

Naughton was selected by Chicago Red Stars as the nineteenth selection in second round in 2016 NWSL College Draft. [3] She scored her first career NWSL goal on June 24, 2018, in a 2–0 win over the Utah Royals FC. [4]

Loan to Adelaide United

In October 2016, Naughton was loaned to Australian club Adelaide United along with her teammates Danielle Colaprico and Sofia Huerta. [5] Naughton re-signed with the club in October 2017, along with her teammates Danielle Colaprico and Alyssa Mautz. [6]

Loan to Perth Glory

Naughton signed with Australian club Perth Glory for the 2018–19 W-League Season, along with Red Stars team-mates Sam Kerr, Alyssa Mautz and Nikki Stanton. [7] [8]

Houston Dash, 2020–

On January 6, 2020, it was announced that Naughton and Chicago's 18th overall selection in the 2020 NWSL College Draft were to be traded to the Houston Dash in exchange for forward Kealia Ohai. [9] [10]

International career

Naughton started her international competition at an early age of 15. [11] Naughton competed with United States under-17 women's national soccer team in international friendly, [12] [13] as well as with United States under-18 women's national soccer team. [14] Naughton played 4 matches at 2014 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. [15] Katie Naughton was a part of United States under-23 women's national soccer team which competed and won the 2016 Istria Cup in Croatia. [16] [17]

Personal

Katie is the only child of Claire and Tom Naughton. Her best friend is named Stephanie Darling. She considers her cousin, Rev. James Patrick Naughton, esq., a brother. Naughton pursued double majors in anthropology and Spanish at Notre Dame, and was named to the Dean's list for 2012 fall semester. She was one of two team representatives to Notre Dame's Student-Athlete Advisory Council. Naughton earned certificates of merit in Notre Dame's Rosenthal Leadership Academy between 2012 and 2014. The 2014 season was the Houston Dash's inaugural season as a professional women's soccer team. As the first expansion team to the National Women's Soccer League, United States' top-flight women's league, the Dash played a 24-game schedule that saw them compete against the eight other NWSL teams, playing each at home and away at least once. The Dash finished the season in last place and ended the season with 5 wins, 3 draws, and 16 losses and a -21 goal differential. The season for the Dash began on April 12, 2014, and concluded August 20, 2014 after the team failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The 2015 Chicago Red Stars season is the seventh season of the soccer club and its third season in National Women's Soccer League. For the first time in NWSL the Red Stars advanced to the playoffs by finishing second in regular season. In addition, the team held the first place for ten consecutive weeks, from week 4 to week 13. However, the club could not reach the NWSL championship, as in the playoffs semi-final the Red Stars lost to the reigning Champion FC Kansas City, by a score of 0–3. It was the club's final season playing home games at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex.
