Jayan Kaushal Silva (born 27 May 1986),or Kaushal Silva,is a professional Sri Lankan Test cricketer. He plays for the Sinhalese Sports Club and the Sri Lankan national team. He made his first class debut in the 2001/02 season. He is a right-handed wicket-keeper batsman.
Silva started off his cricketing career at S. Thomas' College,Mount Lavinia,where he Captained the First XI team in the historic 125th The Battle of the Blues. [1] During his school career he showed his ability to scoring big runs consistently during the seasons and his knack for putting up fighting,gritty innings. Silva received strong support from his father,a well recognized cricket coach,and credits him for the solid batting technique he has developed. [2]
In March 2018,he was named in Colombo's squad for the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament. [3] [4] He was the leading run-scorer for Sinhalese Sports Club in the 2018–19 Premier League Tournament,with 950 runs in eight matches. [5] In February 2019,Sri Lanka Cricket named him as the Best Batsman in the 2017–18 Premier League Tournament. [6]
After being a member of the Sri Lanka A side since 2009,Silva made his Test debut in October 2011 in a series against Pakistan. [7] He was selected for Sri Lanka's tour of South Africa at the end of 2011,but was dropped after the First Test. [8]
He scored his maiden test hundred against Bangladesh on 27 January 2014 at Dhaka. [9] [10]
During the Australian tour in 2016,Silva was struggling to score runs,where he was out for single-digit scores in all of his first 4 innings. The opening partnership often fell in the first few overs,where his counterpart Dimuth Karunaratne also struggled in form. In his first five innings of this series,he scored only 12 runs. During the second innings of Third test at SSC however,he scored his third century - 115 off 269 balls,giving the team a strong lead. [11] Sri Lanka comprehensively won the match by 163 runs,to whitewash Australia for the first time. [12]
After South African tour in late 2016,Silva was dropped from the squad due to poor performances. [13] On 25 September 2017,Silva was re-called into the test squad for Pakistan series in UAE [14] and played the first match back again as the opener. However,he scored only 12 and 25 in the two innings,Sri Lanka won the match by 21 runs with Rangana Herath heroics.
In May 2018,he was one of 33 cricketers to be awarded a national contract by Sri Lanka Cricket ahead of the 2018–19 season. [15] [16]
Kaushal Silva is married to a Sri Lankan teledrama actress and a singer,Bhagya Hettiarachchi. [17] The wedding was held on 18 April 2014 at JAIC Hilton,Colombo. Kaushal Silva regards Cheruka Weerakoon as his mentor and has modeled his personality around him. [18] [19] [20]
On 24 April 2016,Kaushal was struck on the head during a practice match at Pallekele cricket stadium. He was immediately airlifted to a Colombo hospital and scans suggested that no real danger occurred by the hit. He was fielded at short leg,when he struck with the ball in his back side of the head. [21] However,next day he was discharged with he recovered quickly from bruises and mild injuries. [22]
Herath Mudiyanselage Rangana Keerthi Bandara Herath,known as Rangana Herath,is a former Sri Lankan cricketer,who played all forms of cricket game and a former Test cricket captain for Sri Lanka. Herath is the most successful left arm bowler in Test cricket history. He is currently working as spin bowling consultant with the Bangladesh cricket team. Herath was a member of the Sri Lankan team that won the 2014 ICC World Twenty20.
Dinuka Hettiarachchi is a former Sri Lankan Test cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a slow left-arm bowler. Though he not played in international cricket since 2001,he is an active member in Sri Lanka domestic seasons. In 234 first-class matches,Hettiarachchi took exactly 1,000 wickets,the third Sri Lankan after Muttiah Muralitharan and Rangana Herath to achieve the landmark.
Lindamlilage Prageeth Chamara Silva is a former Sri Lankan cricketer,who played all formats of the game for 12 years. He is a right-handed batsman and a leg-break bowler. After poor performances,Silva was dropped from the squad,but continued to play in domestic seasons for Panadura Sports Club.
Warushavithana Upul Tharanga,commonly known as Upul Tharanga is a former professional Sri Lankan cricketer. A former limited over captain,Tharanga played for all formats of the game. He is a left-handed opening batsman and occasional wicket-keeper. He is widely regarded as one of the best Sri Lankan batsmen in One Day Internationals (ODIs). On 23 February 2021,Upul announced his retirement from international cricket. He is the current national chief selector of both Sri Lanka men's and women's cricket teams.
Mahawaduge Dilruwan Kamalaneth Perera is a former Sri Lankan international cricketer,who played for Sri Lanka in all formats of the game. He plays domestically for the Colts Cricket Club. Perera is a right-arm offbreak bowler and right-handed batsman. Started as an opening batsman,Perera is the quickest Sri Lankan bowler to reach both 50 and 100 Test wickets in Sri Lanka. Dilruwan is a past student of Sri Sumangala College.
Lokuge Dinesh Chandimal is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer and a former captain of the Sri Lanka national cricket team. A handy right-handed middle order batter who sometimes plays as the wicket-keeper,Chandimal lead Sri Lanka in the group stages of the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 in which Sri Lanka ended up as the champions. As of today Chandimal has scored over 5000 runs in his test career and has scored over 10000 runs in combined international cricket.
Gampalage Shehan Naveendra De Fonseka Gunawarna Jayasuriya,or commonly Shehan Jayasuriya,is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer,who played for Chilaw Marians in Sri Lankan domestic cricket. He is a quick-scoring left-handed batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler. He was born in Colombo,and attended Prince of Wales College,Moratuwa. He announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in Sri Lanka on 8 January 2021 because of him moving to United States to live with his wife and her family.
Deshabandu Pinnaduwage Aravinda de Silva is a former Sri Lankan cricketer and captain,who has also played in English county cricket. De Silva was a key member of the Sri Lankan team that won 1996 Cricket World Cup,where he scored a match winning century in the final,that brought Sri Lanka from underdog status to present-day form. He has held various posts in Sri Lankan Cricket after his retirement in 2003. He was inducted into ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2023.
Frank Dimuth Madushanka Karunaratne,popularly known as Dimuth Karunaratne,is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer and current captain of the Sri Lanka Test cricket team and formerly captained in ODIs.
