Kaveh Nabatian is an Iranian-Canadian musician and film director, [1] known as a trumpeter and keyboardist with the Juno Award winning orchestral post-rock band Bell Orchestre. [2]

Career

As a filmmaker Nabatian was first noted for his 2010 short film Vapor , about an older Mexican man who comes to terms with homosexuality. The film was a Genie Award nominee for Best Live Action Short Drama at the 31st Genie Awards, [3] and a Prix Jutra nominee for Best Short Film at the 13th Jutra Awards, as well as one of TIFF’s Canada's Top Ten films for the year. [4] [5]

In 2017, Nabatian directed Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything, a documentary on Leonard Cohen which was broadcast by both CBC Television in English and Ici Radio-Canada Télé in French. [6] In 2019, he was the lead director, alongside Sophie Goyette, Juan Andrés Arango, Sophie Deraspe, Karl Lemieux, Ariane Lorrain and Caroline Monnet, of the experimental anthology film, The Seven Last Words (Les sept dernières paroles), set to the music of Joseph Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross, Op. 51. [7] It premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. [8]

Nabatian's debut feature film, Sin La Habana , about an Afro-Cuban ballet dancer who seduces an Iranian Jewish woman in order to escape Cuba, premiered at the Festival du nouveau cinéma in 2020 before being commercially released in 2021. [9] The film stars Yonah Acosta and was written in collaboration with Cuban hip hop producer Pablo Herrera. [10] He received Canadian Screen Award nominations for the John Dunning Best First Feature Award and Best Original Screenplay at the 10th Canadian Screen Awards in 2022 for Sin La Habana. [11] He won the Prix Iris for Best First Film and was nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay at the Gala Québec Cinéma in 2022. [12]

Nabatian’s feature documentary Kite Zo A: Leave the Bones, a sensorial exploration of Haitian rituals, premiered at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma [13] in 2022, where it won the Prix pour la Paix Audience Award. It had its international premiere at South by Southwest in 2023 [14] before going into commercial release. He won the Best Cinematography in a Documentary and was nominated for Best Feature Length Documentary at the 12th Canadian Screen Awards in 2024. [15]

He has also directed music videos for artists including Aurora, [16] Bell Orchestre, [17] Leif Vollebekk, [18] The Barr Brothers, Sarah Neufeld, Little Scream, [19] Lakou Mizik & Joseph Ray [20] and Half Moon Run. [21]

Kaveh Nabatian won the award for Best Cinematography in a Feature Length Documentary at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards for his work on Kite Zo A: Leave the Bones. [22]

Bell Orchestre is a six-piece instrumental band from Montreal. It was formed in 1999 by multi-instrumentalist Richard Parry and violinist Sarah Neufeld. Both also joined Arcade Fire. They were joined in Bell Orchestre by Michael Feuerstack, Stefan Schneider (drums/percussion), Pietro Amato, and Kaveh Nabatian (trumpet/melodica).

The Prix Iris is a Canadian film award, presented annually by Québec Cinéma, which recognizes talent and achievement in the mainly francophone feature film industry in Quebec. Until 2016, it was known as the Jutra Award in memory of influential Quebec film director Claude Jutra, but Jutra's name was withdrawn from the awards following the publication of Yves Lever's biography of Jutra, which alleged that he had sexually abused children.

The John Dunning Best First Feature Award is a special Canadian film award, presented by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to the year's best feature film by a first-time film director. Under the earlier names Claude Jutra Award and Canadian Screen Award for Best First Feature, the award has been presented since the 14th Genie Awards in 1993.

Sylvain Bellemare is a Canadian sound editor and sound designer, best known internationally as the supervising sound editor of Arrival (2016), for which he won the BAFTA Award for Best Sound and the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing. Martin Dubreuil is a Canadian actor and musician from Quebec. He is most noted for his performance in the film For Those Who Don't Read Me , for which he won the Prix Iris for Best Actor at the 21st Quebec Cinema Awards in 2019.

Vapor is a Canadian comedy-drama short film, directed by Kaveh Nabatian and released in 2010. The film depicts the emotional journey of Enrique Salgado, a middle-aged gay Mexican man, through shame, fear and internalized homophobia toward self-acceptance, after being invited to pose in the nude for a photographer (Evergon).

Sophie Goyette is a Canadian film director and screenwriter. She is most noted for her 2012 short film The Near Future , which was a Canadian Screen Award nominee for Best Live Action Short Drama at the 1st Canadian Screen Awards, and a Prix Jutra nominee for Best Short Film at the 15th Jutra Awards.

Sin La Habana is a Canadian-Cuban drama film, directed by Kaveh Nabatian and released in 2020.

Yvann Thibaudeau is a Canadian film editor. He is most noted as a two-time Prix Jutra/Iris winner for Best Editing, winning at the 11th Jutra Awards in 2009 for Borderline and at the 21st Quebec Cinema Awards in 2019 for 1991.
