Tatarstan, officially the Republic of Tatarstan, sometimes also called Tataria, is a republic of Russia located in Eastern Europe. It is a part of the Volga Federal District; and its capital and largest city is Kazan, an important cultural centre in Russia. The region's main source of wealth is oil with a strong petrochemical industry.
Kazan is the largest city and capital of Tatarstan, Russia. The city lies at the confluence of the Volga and the Kazanka Rivers, covering an area of 425.3 square kilometres, with a population of over 1.3 million residents, and up to nearly 2 million residents in the greater metropolitan area. Kazan is the fifth-largest city in Russia, being the most populous city on the Volga, as well as within the Volga Federal District.
Mari El, officially the Mari El Republic, is a republic of Russia. It is in the European region of the country, along the northern bank of the Volga River, and administratively part of the Volga Federal District. The republic has a population of 696,459. Yoshkar-Ola is the capital and largest city.
The Khanate of Kazan was a medieval Tatar Turkic state that occupied the territory of the former Volga Bulgaria between 1438 and 1552. The khanate covered contemporary Tatarstan, Mari El, Chuvashia, Mordovia, and parts of Udmurtia and Bashkortostan; its capital was the city of Kazan. It was one of the successor states of the Golden Horde, and it came to an end when it was conquered by the Tsardom of Russia.

The Mongol invasion of Volga Bulgaria lasted from 1223 to 1236. The Bulgar state, centered in lower Volga and Kama, was the center of the fur trade in Eurasia throughout most of its history. Before the Mongol conquest, Russians of Novgorod and Vladimir repeatedly looted and attacked the area, thereby weakening the Bulgar state's economy and military power. The latter ambushed the Mongols in the later 1223 or in 1224. Several clashes occurred between 1229–1234, and the Mongol Empire conquered the Bulgars in 1236.

Kuybyshev Reservoir or Kuybyshevskoye Reservoir, sometimes called Samara Reservoir and informally called Kuybyshev Sea, is a reservoir of the middle Volga and lower Kama in Chuvashia, Mari El Republic, Republic of Tatarstan, Samara Oblast and Ulyanovsk Oblast, Russia. The Kuybyshev Reservoir has a surface area of 6,450 km² and a volume of 58 billion cubic meters. It is the largest reservoir in Europe and third in the world by surface area. The major cities of Kazan, Ulyanovsk, and Tolyatti are adjacent to the reservoir.

The Shoshma is a river in Mari El, Tatarstan and Kirov Oblast, Russian Federation, a right-bank tributary of the Vyatka. Its length is 105 kilometres (65 mi), of which 90 kilometres (56 mi) are in Tatarstan, and its drainage basin covers 1,885 square kilometres (728 sq mi). It originates near Maly Kiner, Mari El and flows to the Vyatka near Malmyzh, Kirov Oblast.
Baykal is a village in Arsky District of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, situated 52 kilometers (32 mi) south of Arsk, the administrative center of the district, on the border with Mari El Republic. Baykal's population was 333 in 1989, 315 in 1997 and 291 in 2000; mostly ethnic Tatars. The main occupations of the residents are agriculture and cattle breeding. There is a primary school in the village. It was founded in the 18th century as Yaña Tazlar, in 1941 it was renamed Baykal.
Agryzsky District is a territorial administrative unit and municipality of the Republic of Tatarstan within the Russian Federation. The district is located in the northeast of the republic on the bank of the Izh River and occupies an area of 1796.6 square kilometers. According to the 2010 census, the municipality had a population of 36,848. The main city of Agryz accounts for 52.7% of the district's total population and is located 304 km east of Kazan and 36 km from Izhevsk.
Atninsky District is a territorial administrative unit and municipal district of the Republic of Tatarstan within the Russian Federation. The district is located in the northwest of the republic. The territory of the district includes 47 settlements, which are united into 12 rural settlements. As of 2020, 12 883 people reside in the district. The administrative center is the village of Bolshaya Atnya, founded during the period of the Khanate of Kazan.
Baltasinsky District is a territorial administrative unit and municipality of the Republic of Tatarstan within the Russian Federation. The district is located in the north of the republic and occupies an area of 1,094.5 square kilometers (422.6 sq mi). According to the 2010 census, the municipality had a population of 33,879 people. Its administrative center — an urban-type settlement of Baltasi — accounts for 22.8% of the district's total population.
Vysokogorsky District is a territorial administrative unit and municipal district of the Republic of Tatarstan within the Russian Federation. The administrative center of the district is the village of Vysokaya Gora. The district population at the beginning of 2020 was 51,567.
Zelenodolsky District — is a territorial administrative unit and municipal district of the Republic of Tatarstan within the Russian Federation. The district is divided by a channel of the Volga river into sections on the right-bank and left-bank. The administrative center of the district is Zelenodolsk. At the beginning of 2020, the population of the district was 165,915.

Mishar Tatar or Western Tatar is a dialect of Tatar spoken by Mishar Tatars, mainly in Penza, Ulyanovsk, Orenburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Volgograd, and Saratov oblasts of Russia, in Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Chuvashia and Mordovia, and also in Finland.
Kukmor is a city and the administrative center of Kukmorsky District in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, located on the Nurminka River, near the border with Kirov Oblast, 120 kilometers (75 mi) from the republic's capital of Kazan. As of the 2021 Census, its population was 17,886.
