Kennedy Noble is an American swimmer from Arizona, who currently swims for the North Carolina State University Wolfpack. She is particularly accomplished in backstroke events. She is also an honor student.

Early life and education

Helen (Kennedy) Noble was born March 16, 2004. [1] [2] She is from Avondale/Goodyear/Litchfield Park, Arizona. [3] [4] [5] Noble is the daughter of Brett Noble and Jana Jones-Lybarger. [3] She was raised in a blended family by Brett Noble and Tara Hankins, as well as Jocelyn and Jana Jones-Lybarger. [3]

Noble has cited her mom, Jana, as a personal inspiration regarding athletics. Jana was a triathlete and Kennedy used to watch her mom train in the pool for hours every day. [3]

Noble began competing at age 9 with a recreational swim team where she excelled. By age 11, she began club swimming with the YMCA Westside Silver Fins. [3] By the age of 13, she was already viewed as an especially strong backstroker. [6]

Just before her freshman year of high school, Noble was named Swimming World’s Up & Comer in August 2018. [7] A few months later, her club coach, Ryan Kent, died. [8] Noble attributes his mentorship for giving her perspective on her achievements and inspiring her love for the sport. [3]

She continued swimming for the Silver Fins under Coach Darian Townsend. [9] Townsend was himself a three-time Olympic swimmer and gold medalist. [9] Noble credited Townsend with giving her helpful techniques to manage the stress and challenges of competing at increasingly elite levels. [9] Noble qualified and swam in the 2020 USA Swimming Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Nebraska. [9] In 2021, she competed in the World Cups in Budapest and Berlin. [10]

In October 2022, Noble gave her verbal committed to swim for North Carolina State University after her high school graduation. [11] She was the #9 swim recruit in the Class of 2022. [12]

In her senior year of high school, she followed Coach Townsend to the Phoenix Swim Club. [13] During her high school career, Noble set numerous state swim records in Arizona, repeatedly breaking her own records. [2] She is especially noted for her 200 backstroke. In that event, Noble was the bronze medalist at the 2021 World Cup and a semifinalist at the 2021 Olympic Trials. [14] During her high school career, she was an International National Junior Team member in 2021 and 2022, as well as a member of the 2021-2022 Junior National Team member. [14]

Noble graduated from Millennium High School in May 2022. She was honored by the 2022 Arizona High School Sports Awards program as the top female swimmer in the state. [15] She holds state records for 50 and 100 Back, 100 and 200 Fly, as well as 200 IM. [16]

In addition to being an elite athlete, Noble was an honor student in high school. She was a three-time Scholastic All-American. [14]

Swimming career

Noble began her collegiate swimming career at North Carolina State University in Fall 2022. [14] In her freshman year, she achieved a number of accomplishments. She was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week on January 31, 2023, after her performance against Duke where she won both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events. She was a member of the 2022-23 Junior National Team. She was an ACC bronze medalist in the 100-yard backstroke and was sixth in the 200-yard IM. At the 2023 NCAA Championships, Noble was named All-American in three individual events, qualified for finals in all of her individual events, placed fifth in the 200-yard backstroke, 11th in the 100-yard backstroke and 14th in the 200-yard IM. Noble ended her freshman year with three individual program top ten times at North Carolina State University: 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke and 200 IM. [14]

In her sophomore year, she continued to swim well. In October 2023, she represented the U.S. in the Pan-American Games, where she won silver in the 100m backstroke and gold in the 200m backstroke. [4] [17] At the 2024 NCAA Championships, she finished third in the 100-yard backstroke and broke a Wolfpack program record in the 200-yard IM. [18] Noble was also an All-American recipient. [19]

Heading into the 2024 U.S. Olympic trials, Kennedy Noble was seen as a potential threat in the 200 backstroke event. [17]

At the 1975 Pan American Games he won the 200 m backstroke event, but also contracted hepatitis and had to stop training for several months, managing to recover by the 1976 Olympics where he medaled in the event. He would later have a career as an architect.

Madeline Jane "Maya" DiRado-Andrews is a retired American competitive swimmer who specialized in freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and individual medley events. She attended and swam for Stanford University, where she won NCAA titles in the 200 and 400 meter individual medley in 2014 and graduated with a degree in management science and engineering. At the 2016 US Olympic Trials, DiRado qualified to swim the 200 meter and 400 meter individual medley events, as well as the 200 meter backstroke, at the 2016 Summer Olympics. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she won a gold medal in the women's 4x200 meter freestyle relay, a silver medal in the 400 meter individual medley, a bronze medal in the women's 200 meter individual medley, and a gold medal in the 200 meter backstroke. Following the Olympics, DiRado retired from the sport.

Taylor Madison Ruck is a Canadian competitive swimmer. She won two Olympic bronze medals as part of Canada's women's 4×100 metre and 4×200 metre freestyle relay teams at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Ruck won eight medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Her eight medal performance of one gold, five silver, and two bronze tied her with three other athletes for the most all-time at a single Commonwealth Games, as well as making her the most decorated Canadian female athlete ever at a single Commonwealth Games. Ruck is the all-time leading medallist at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships having won nine gold, two silver, and two bronze over the course of the 2015 and 2017 editions.

In February 2024, Gorbenko won a silver medal at the Doha World Championships in the women's 400 meters individual medley. Gorbenko represented Israel at the 2024 Summer Olympics in swimming in the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley, 4x200m freestyle relay, and mixed 4x100m medley relay.

Amy Bilquist is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in the backstroke and freestyle events. She represented LA Current in the 2019 season of the International Swimming League and will represent DC Trident in the 2020 season.

Rhyan Elizabeth White is an American swimmer. Douglass then won six medals, including two golds, at the 2023 World Championships. At the 2024 World Championships, she won five medals, including two golds. Douglass won four medals, including two golds, at the 2024 Olympic Games; she became the Olympic champion in the 200 m breaststroke.

David Avery Curtiss is an American professional swimmer. He is a US Open record holder in the 4×50-yard medley relay. At the 2019 World Junior Championships, he won the silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle. In 2021, he set a new American high school record in the 50-yard freestyle for all high school swimming, public and private, in the United States. At the 2022 World Short Course Championships, he competed in three freestyle relay events and the 50-meter freestyle, winning a bronze medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. He is a 2023 NCAA Division I champion in the 4×50-yard medley relay.

Gretchen Walsh is an American competitive swimmer, swimsuit model, and the world record holder in the 100 meter butterfly, 4×100 medley relay, mixed gender 4×100 medley relay, and 100 meter IM. She won the silver medal in the 100 meter butterfly at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where she also set the Olympic record in the 100 meter butterfly in the semifinals with a time of 55.38. She additionally holds one world junior record in the mixed gender 4×100 medley relay event, as well as American records in the 50 meter butterfly, 4×100 meter freestyle relay, 4×100 meter medley relay, 50 meter freestyle, 50 meter backstroke, 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard backstroke, 4×50 yard freestyle relay, 4×50 yard medley relay, 4×100 yard freestyle relay, and 4×100 yard medley relay.

Teagan O'Dell is an American competitive swimmer. She is a 200 m backstroke Champion in 2023 World Junior Championships, also win gold medalist in 4×100 m mixed medley with silver medalist in 4×100 m freestyle. At the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, she placed fourth in the 200 meter individual medley, won the b-final of the 200 meter backstroke, and placed second in the b-final of the 100 meter backstroke.
