Kevin Yi is a Taiwanese lyricist. Yi was nominated for Best Lyricist in the Golden Melody Awards and has worked alongside a number of notable artists including Stefanie Sun, JJ Lin, Coco Lee, Chief Zhao, and Yida Huang. Yi is currently employed as an exclusive writer at Warner Chappell Music.

Career

Early career

Yi began writing lyrics as a student, and would always carry a notebook with him to keep his writing ideas. Early in his career, he joined the marketing department of Rock Records in Taiwan. Yi's first project was Chief Zhao's “A Tiny Bird” (我是一隻小小鳥). [1] [2]

Yi then moved on to serving as an A&R, and later joined BMG Music as the Marketing and Promotion Director. At the same time, he published numerous lyrics that became popular tracks. [3] [4]

Songwriting

Yi wrote the lyrics for the Chinese version of “ A Love Before Time ”, the theme song for the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon . This song was performed by Coco Lee and featured Yo-Yo Ma on cello. It was also nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. [5]

During his time serving as the Marketing Director at Warner Music, Yi made contributions to the debuts of artists like Stefanie Sun and Yida Huang. He has worked on Leehom Wang's “Forever's First Day永遠的第一天” and A-Mei's “Remember記得”. [6] [1]

Over the years, Yi老师 has written numerous tracks, including Stefanie Sun's “Kite風箏”, “Love Dictionary愛情字典”, “Someone Like Me (同類”), “Encounter遇見”, F.I.R's “Crescent Bay月牙灣”, and Khalil Fong's “Fu Ke Hui Yi復刻回憶”. The song Yi wrote for JJ Lin in 2013, “Practice Love修煉愛情”, won Hito Pop Music Best 10 Singles, and Singapore Hit Awards Best 10 Singles.

He has published over 1,000 Mandarin songs written for various artists from Hong Kong and Taiwan, such as Terry Lin, Stefanie Sun, Jackie Chan, Jolin Tsai, Shirley Kwan, Eric Suen, Hacken Lee, Jordan Chan, Sam Lee, Karen Mok, F4, 4 in Love, Kelly Chen, Cecilia Cheung, Hins Cheung, Evonne Hsu, Fish Leong, Rachel Liang, Eason Chan, A-Mei, Tanya Chua, Joi Chua, Winnie Hsin, JJ Lin, Leehom Wang, Will Pan, Andy Lau, Sandy Lam, Yida Huang, S.H.E, Yoga Lin, Victor Wong, Cyndi Wang, Kay Tse, Andy Hui, Jacky Cheung, Sammi Cheng, Rainie Yang, Vivian Hsu, Valen Hsu, Wan Fang, Joey Yung, Julia Peng, Leon Lai Gigi Leung, Rene Liu, Anita Mui, Leo Ku, Tiger Huang, Aaron Kwok, Van Fan, Twins, Nicholas Tse and others.

Current career

Yi plays various roles in the Chinese music industry. As of 2020, Yi was working on Eason Chan's “Soar披風”, JJ Lin's “53 Dawns黑夜問白天”, Amei and Sandy Lam's “Double Shadow雙影” (song from drama “Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace”), and Mayday vocalist Ashin cover of Joi Chua's song “The Hidden Memories 隱形的紀念” (song for the exhibition “Where have all the flowers gone?”) [7] [8]

Style

In his lyrics, Yi also likes to illustrate scenarios in people's daily lives. He can help listeners connect deeply to the song and guide them to construct a whole image in their minds that is unique to them by using fragments of situations that everyone recognizes.[ citation needed ]

With his lyrics 地下鐵 (Singer: 鍾漢良, Composer: 邰正宵), Yi was nominated for the Best Lyricist Award in the 10th Golden Melody Award, 1999. [9]

Initially, there were 10,632 submissions from 185 companies in the music industry, making it the largest submission pool in the Awards' history.

Chien Yao is a Taiwanese lyricist and author, known for supporting and beginning the careers of many artists. Yao is known to write about female sentiments. He has supported the careers of many A-list singers. Yao had served in Dian Jiang Records and Sony Music Taiwan, and had been the GM of EMI Records Taiwan, Virgin Records Taiwan, and Music Nation Group Taiwan. Yao is currently retired from executive positions and serves as an exclusive writer for Warner Chappell Music, Hong Kong Limited Taiwan Branch.

Hsiao-Wen Ting is a singer-songwriter, producer, A&R executive, executive manager, and TV host. Currently, she plays an active role in the Chinese music industry, having entered the industry in 1985.

Lo-Jung Chen (陳樂融) is a lyricist in the Chinese music industry and has written over 500 songs, marketed and promoted hundreds of albums on the UFO Records label. He's also a screenplay for theater productions and the host for radio and internet broadcasting shows.

Chen Ming-chang (陳明章) is a Taiwanese folk singer, guitarist, Taiwanese yueqin player, composer, and producer born in Beitou. He is known for writing scores for the Hou Hsiao-Hsien films Dust in the Wind (1985) and The Puppetmaster (1993), as well as for songs such as "She Is Our Darling" and "Wandering to Tamsui". He is stylistically known for singing primarily in Taiwanese Hokkien, incorporating traditional styles and instruments into his music, as well as songs that represent the Taiwanese underclass.

Yen is a Taiwanese lyricist, writer, and A&R. He graduated from the Department of Land Economics, National Chengchi University. In 2008, he won the “Best Original Song” in the 45th Golden Horse Awards with the theme song for the movie "Cape No. 7 海角七號". In 2013, Jolin Tsai’s “The Great Artist 大藝術家", which he wrote the lyrics for, won the “Song of the Year” in the 24th Golden Melody Awards.

"I Know You're Feeling Blue" is a song by Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai from her debut studio album, 1019 (1999). The song was written by Jimmy Ye and Kiki Hu, and it was produced by David Wu. It was released as the second single from the album in September 1999, by Universal and D Sound.

Wu Chu-chu is a Taiwanese musician. He is known as one of the “First Generation Folk Singers” together with Parangalan (胡德夫) Yang Zujun, (楊祖珺) Yang Xian (楊弦) and others. After fading from fame, he established the UFO Group and entered the pop music business, fighting hard against music piracy.

Moon Night Sorrow is a popular Taiwanese Hokkien song, which takes its tune from the music of the Plains indigenous peoples of Taiwan. It was composed during the Period of Japanese Rule in Taiwan by Deng Yuxian, with lyrics by Zhou Tianwang (周添旺). It was first performed in public by Lin Shihao (林氏好), and recorded by Columbia Records on a record, which was released in 1933.
