Kill la Kill: If (also known as Kill la Kill the Game: If and stylized as Kill la Kill: IF) is a 3D fighting game based on the Kill la Kill anime television series, released on July 25, 2019 in Japan and the following day in North America and Europe. The game was developed by A+ Games, working closely with both the publisher Arc System Works and the original animation studio Trigger. Design of the game focused on accessibility for a wide audience, featuring simple, easy to learn combat mechanics and an emphasis on the single-player story mode. The plot follows a "What if?" story line where main character Satsuki Kiryuin is the protagonist instead of Ryuko Matoi. IF received overall mixed reviews from critics.
Combat centers around the fundamental combination of short-range attacks, long-range attacks, and guard break attacks. These core elements are supplemented by movement options and special attacks. For movement, the player is able to roam freely around the fighting arena, as well as perform an air dash which brings the player directly to the opponent. With the addition of dodging and guarding, a basic rock-paper-scissors relationship is formed where blocks stop attacks, guard breaks beat guards, and dodges avoid guard breaks. [1] Special attacks are high damage moves which require charging a special gauge through dealing/taking damage. Using a special attack will also cause a short cut scene to play with an animation of the character performing the special move.
The game features eight playable characters: Ryuko Matoi, Satsuki Kiryuin, Nonon Jakuzure, Ira Gamagoori, Houka Inumuta, Uzu Sanageyama, Nui Harime, and Ragyo Kiryuin. Two additional characters, Nudist Beach D.T.R. and Mako Mankanshoku, were added to the game via free updates. [2] Each of the playable characters have a completely unique fighting style determined by their respective implementations of the core move set (short/long-range attacks, break, special). For example, Gamagoori has an additional "damage gauge" which charges up upon taking damage when in a special form; the act of switching forms replaces his long-range attack. Charging the damage gauge increases damage dealt, which can be done intentionally by whipping himself, sacrificing hit points for greater damage. Another example is Inumuta, whose long-range attacks charge a unique "analysis gauge", used to increase the damage of break attacks or cancel the opponent's specials.
The game has several playable modes, including story mode, local versus, online versus, a few practice modes, and a couple additional challenge modes. By default, only the story mode is playable, with the rest being unlocked after playing through the first few chapters of the story which act as the game's tutorial. The story mode contains a variety of battle types, including 1v1 duels, three-way battles, and one vs. many brawls against the Cover enemy type. The local and online versus modes are 1v1 duels only, typical for many fighting games. The brawl battles from the story mode reappear in the additional Cover Challenge mode, where the player has to fight off hordes of mindless enemies.

The story in the game features an entirely original, alternate version of the plot in the anime series, written under the supervision of the anime scenario writer Kazuki Nakashima. [3] The story is split in two chapters, initially branching from the 8th episode of the anime. [4] The first chapter follows a "What if?" story line with Satsuki Kiryuin as the protagonist, instead of the original protagonist Ryuko Matoi. [5] The second chapter does follow Ryuko, continuing to explore alternate scenarios of the story in the show.
The idea for turning the Kill la Kill anime series into a fighting game first came when a producer at Arc System Works posted a tweet about their enjoyment of the show [6] . This led to a meeting with the Kill la Kill rights holder, but nothing happened initially as Arc Systems were busy working on other projects [6] . Roughly a year later, another meeting was held to revisit the idea, where A+ Games were brought on to the project, having worked with Trigger before on the game Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time [6] . Development was tumultuous in the early stages, with the game's original director being switched out for the final Hideaki Mizot, and the team pivoting two or three times on the game idea. [6] Much of the difficulty came from the close involvement of both Arc System Works and studio Trigger, with Mizota commenting that "in terms of development and working with either team was about 100 times more difficult than Little Witch Academia". [6] In particular, Trigger had unusually deep involvement with the game's development, often requesting highly detailed changes to the team at A+ Games. [6] After a few years of development, the first announcement for the game happened on June 16, 2018, following a countdown website launched by Studio Trigger. [7] More details, including an announcement trailer, were revealed in July at that year's Anime Expo. [8] The final release date was announced on March 20, 2019. [9]
Kill la Kill the Game: IF received "mixed or average" reviews for the Nintendo Switch version, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. [10] Many sites praised the visual style and animations as a standout feature of the game; a review by Mike Epstein from IGN describes the game having "an elegant cel-shaded artstyle" with animation that "feel[s] like watching an anime in its rare, exciting moments". [1] [5] [11] [12] [13] Outside the visuals, the fighting mechanics are commonly criticized for lacking depth, resulting in a shallow experience. Lewis White of Nintendo Life deemed it "one of the weakest fighters we've played in quite some time", especially when comparing it to other critically acclaimed fighting games from the publisher Arc System Works such as BlazBlue and Guilty Gear . [12] Another point of criticism is the game's overall lack of content, stemming from the short story mode, small roster of playable characters, and small selection of fighting arenas. Art of Fighting is a fighting game series originally released for the Neo Geo platform in the early 1990s. It is the second fighting game franchise created by SNK, following the Fatal Fury series, and is set in the same fictional universe. The original Art of Fighting was released in 1992, followed by two sequels: Art of Fighting 2 in 1994 and Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior in 1996. A new Art of Fighting game is currently in development.
Sonic Battle is a 2003 beat 'em up video game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Game Boy Advance. It is the second fighting game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, the first game being Sonic the Fighters. It was released in Japan in December 2003 and in North America and Europe in early 2004. The game received an indifferent response from critics.
Melty Blood, sometimes shortened as Merubura (メルブラ), is a series of 2D visual novel fighting video games, co-developed by dōjin circles Type-Moon and French-Bread as the meta-sequel of Type-Moon's first visual novel Tsukihime.
Inuyasha: Feudal Combat is a 3D computer graphics fighting game for the PlayStation 2 based on the Inuyasha manga and anime series.
Battle Fantasia is a fighting video game developed by Arc System Works. Originally released in Japanese arcades in April 2007, the title was ported to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in Japan in May 2008, followed by a North American release for Xbox 360 in September 2008 by Aksys Games. It was later released in the PAL region in 2009 for both systems by 505 Games (Europe) and Aksys Games (Australia). A PC version, ported in collaboration with DotEmu and distributed via Steam, was released on July 7, 2015 globally as Battle Fantasia: Revised Edition. The game's development was headed by Emiko Iwasaki, who had previously served as illustrator for the company's Guilty Gear series, and features three-dimensional character models restricted to a two-dimensional plane. Battle Fantasia retains a number of features of its predecessor including fast-paced gameplay, colorful anime-style graphics, and over-the-top effects, yet was designed to be a more basic representation of the fighting genre.
Guilty Gear is a 2D fighting video game developed by Team Neo Blood, an Arc System Works production group led by Daisuke Ishiwatari, and published by Arc System Works. First released on May 14, 1998, for the PlayStation, it is the first installment in the series of the same name. Set in a world destroyed by a war between humans and bio-organic weapons called Gears, it follows ten fighters as they enter a tournament held to prevent resurrection of the Gears' leader. Its gameplay consists of one-on-one fights, a four-button attack configuration featuring special moves and instant kill techniques, as well as three different playable modes.
Naruto: Clash of Ninja, released in Japan as Naruto: Gekitō Ninja Taisen!, is a series of 3D cel-shaded fighting games based on the manga and anime series Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto. They are developed by Eighting and published by D3 Publisher and Tomy. The series began with four GameCube games, with the first two available internationally and the last two released exclusively in Japan, before splitting into two parallel Wii-exclusive follow-up series: the Gekitō Ninja Taisen EX tetralogy released exclusively in Japan and its international counterpart, the Clash of Ninja: Revolution trilogy. The two Wii series share the same gameplay mechanics, but differ with respect to content and characters, with the international Revolution series being based on a localized version of the Naruto anime series. The first half of the original series and the entire Revolution trilogy are available in North America and Europe, the first two Revolution games are available in Australasia and all games in the series except the Revolution trilogy are available in Japan.
Bleach: Heat the Soul is a series of fighting games developed by Eighting and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation Portable. They are based on the manga and anime series Bleach by Tite Kubo. All installments have been released only in Japan.
BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is a 2-D fighting game developed by Arc System Works. The game's name is a combination of the words "blaze" and "blue" when the title is rendered in rōmaji, and of the words "brave" and "blue" when rendered in katakana. As Japanese people usually follow the katakana rendering, the Japanese pronunciation is made similar to the word "bray", entirely omitting the "z" sound. The game was released for the arcade in 2008, it was also released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. A port for the PlayStation Portable, titled BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Portable, was released in 2010. It was the first game for the BlazBlue franchise.
Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors is a series of fighting games based on the Dragon Ball franchise. The first game was developed by Arc System Works and Cavia and was released for the Game Boy Advance on June 22, 2004. A sequel, Supersonic Warriors 2, was released in 2005 for the Nintendo DS.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle is a fighting game developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment for PlayStation 3. Based on Hirohiko Araki's long-running manga series JoJo' s Bizarre Adventure, the game allows players to compete against each other using 40 characters taken from the first eight story arcs, as well as one guest character from another manga also created by Araki. The game was released in Japan on August 29, 2013, and was released internationally in late April 2014.
Guilty Gear is a series of fighting games by Arc System Works, created and designed by artist Daisuke Ishiwatari. The first game was published in 1998, and has spawned several sequels. It has also adapted to other media such as manga and drama CD. Guilty Gear has generally received praise from video game reviewers for its highly technical gameplay, graphics, soundtrack, and for its characters. Another fighting game franchise by Arc System Works, BlazBlue, is considered a spiritual successor of the series.
Kill la Kill is a Japanese anime television series created and produced by Trigger. The series follows vagrant schoolgirl Ryuko Matoi on her search for her father's killer, which brings her into violent conflict with Satsuki Kiryuin, the iron-willed student council president of Honnouji Academy, and her mother Ragyo Kiryuin's fashion empire. Ryuko, Satsuki, and others obtain martial arts superpowers from their clothes, which appear to have a will of their own.
J-Stars Victory VS is a crossover fighting video game that combines the universes of several Weekly Shōnen Jump manga series, including former series and some that have been transferred to other magazines. It was released in Japan by Bandai Namco Entertainment on March 19, 2014 for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in celebration of Weekly Shōnen Jump's 45th anniversary. It was re-released for western territories as J-Stars Victory VS+ for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita, with an additional Arcade Mode for the international release. It was released in Europe on June 26, 2015 and in North America on June 30, 2015. A follow-up game, Jump Force, released on February 15, 2019 to tie in with the 50th anniversary of Weekly Shōnen Jump.
Saint Seiya: Brave Soldiers is a 2013 fighting video game developed by Dimps and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. It features characters and the story of Masami Kurumada's manga series Saint Seiya. It is the first Saint Seiya game to be released in North America.
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 is an action video game, developed by Omega Force and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Windows. The game is the sequel to One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2, released in Japan on March 26, 2015 and subsequently in the West on August 25, 2015. This is the last One Piece video game released for the PlayStation 3. An enhanced port for the Nintendo Switch was released in December 2017. It is the third installment in the Pirate Warriors video-game series.
Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition is a 2015 action-adventure game developed and published by Capcom. A remastered version of Capcom's action-adventure game Devil May Cry 4, it was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. The game features new playable characters, new cutscenes, polished gameplay, improved graphics, the option to switch between English and Japanese voice tracks, and additional costumes.
BlazBlue: Central Fiction, released in Japan as BlazBlue: Centralfiction, is a 2-D fighting video game developed by Arc System Works. It is the fourth game in the series, set after BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma. It was also the final game of the main series.
