"Kill the Noise" is a song by American rock band Papa Roach. It is the lead single and first track from their eleventh album Ego Trip. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart in November 2021.
The single was released alongside an official music video on September 9, 2021. [1] The track was produced by WZRD BLD (Drew Fulk) and Andrew Goldstein. [2] It followed the band's previous single, "Swerve", by a little over a month. The music video, directed by Shaddix's brother Bryson Roatch, shows a raw, energetic performance and takes the viewer on a journey of escaping the confines of the mind. [3] The band said the song might be one of their heaviest new tracks in years, even calling it their hardest song in four years. [4] In December 2021, they announced the first leg of their 2022 North American "Kill the Noise" tour, which shared its name with the single. [5] [6] Jacoby Shaddix said that releasing the single through the band's own label had been successful and "really great" for them. [7]
Lyrically, it deals with inner struggles and mental tension. [2] The song is packed with chunky hard-rock riffs and strong, in-your-face vocals. [3] Shaddix said the song is straight-up heavy music that helps you let off some steam, a way to grab some peace from all the noise in your head. [4] It also features a nu metal-style bounce in the guitars. [8]
Chad Childers of Loudwire suggested that Shaddix's "Shut up" in the song could stand alongside "One Step Closer", calling the accompanying music video chaotic. [9] A review from Sputnikmusic said that even though the song is built around a straightforward riff and a chorus that brings to mind "Teardrops", it's still considered as one of the listenable tracks on the album. [10] Megan Jenkins of Distorted Sound described the track as a strong opener, pointing to its loud guitar riff, clapping beats, and more modern metal touches that hit right away. [11] Katie Conway-Flood of Gigwise called the song a killer opener, with massive guitar blasts, big soaring choruses, a heavy breakdown, and lyrics that hit you, saying it might be the first time Papa Roach have gone this heavy since 2015. [12] Steve Beebee of Kerrang! called the song an instant hit, pointing out its mix of heaviness and melodic hooks. [13]
It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart on November 20, 2021, their seventh song to do so. It was their second No. 1 on the chart for 2021, making it the first time that they had two No. 1's in the same year. [14]
