Background and composition

"No Apologies" was inspired by Jacoby Shaddix's reflections on his relationship with his biological father. He described the lyrics as a personal letter, helping him release anger and resentment from past struggles. [1] Shaddix reflected that his father had done his best given his circumstances, and that he held no ill will toward him, expressing forgiveness and love. [2]

Musically, the track is built around heavy guitar riffs and emotionally charged vocals, while critics described it as an emo-tinged track with alternative rock elements. [3] [4] It appears on the band's album Ego Trip, released via New Noize Records. [4] Shaddix later noted that its chart-topping success was especially meaningful because it was released through the band's own label, emphasizing their creative independence. [5]

Music video

The music video continues the narrative from Papa Roach's 2017 single "Help", depicting a story of love and forgiveness. Shaddix described it as "an expression of love and forgiveness. A story we can all learn from and grow from." [4] The video was released in June 2022, coinciding with Father's Day. [6]

Critical reception

The song received generally positive commentary from music critics. Clash Music described it as a "stand-out nostalgia tune" and "emo-tinged banger," evoking the emotional intensity of early 2000s alt-rock. [3] Consequence highlighted the song's personal inspiration and themes of reconciliation. [1]

Commercially, it topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, marking Papa Roach's eighth number-one on the listing. [7] Loudwire reported that the single became the band's tenth No. 1 rock-radio hit and the second chart-topper from Ego Trip, following "Kill the Noise". [5] Blabbermouth described the video as heartwarming and noted its continuity with "Help". [6]

Sputnikmusic offered a more critical perspective, calling the track "ridiculously generic" but acknowledging it as a "surprisingly decent display of Shaddix' vocal competence". [8]
