He has served as the Special Adviser overseeing the affairs of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Kogi State from January to August of 2019. He has also served as the Honorable Commissioner, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, until December 2019, with the same functions of overseeing the affairs of the Ministry. In January 2020, at the inception of the second tenure of Yahaya Bello, he was re-appointed to serve as the Honorable Commissioner for Works and Housing. Abubakar Ohere is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).
The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Kogi State were held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Kogi State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections coincided with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.
