The 6th National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was a bicameral legislature inaugurated on 5 June 2007 and ran its course till 6 June 2011. The assembly comprises the Senate and the House of Representatives. A total of 360 representatives were elected as members of the House of Representatives, while 109 members were elected to the Senate, making a total of 469 members altogether. [1] [2]

Presiding officers

The Senate President presides over the Senate, the higher chamber while the Speaker presides over the House of Representatives. [3] [4]

David Mark was elected Senate President on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party and Dimeji Bankole, the Speaker of the House of Representatives succeeded Patricia Etteh, who was forced to resign on alleged mismanagement of funds. [5] [6] [7] [8]

Gyang Dalyop Datong was a Nigerian senator who represented the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State. He became a member of the Nigerian Senate in 2007. On 12 April 2003, he was elected to the 5th House of Representatives on the platform of the ANPP defeating his closest rival James Vwi of the PDP. He represented Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency from 2003 to 2007. Datong died on 8 July 2012 while attending a mass funeral of people who had been killed by Fulani herdsmen in Maase area of Riyom local government in Plateau State. The people at the funeral were attacked by gunmen thought to also be Fulani.

The 8th Rivers State House of Assembly is the session of the Rivers State legislature formed after the 11 April and 18 2015 elections. Representatives of the Assembly were elected from 32 constituencies with members of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the majority. The Assembly was inaugurated on 1 June 2015. The elected presiding officer (Speaker) was Ikuinyi O. Ibani, until 19 December, when he resigned and was replaced by Adams Dabotorudima. In December 2016, Ikuinyi O. Ibani was re-elected as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The 2015 Nigerian Senate election in Benue State was held on March 28, 2015, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Benue State. Barnabas Andyar Gemade representing Benue North East and George Akume representing Benue North West won on the platform of All Progressives Congress, while David Mark representing Benue South won on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party.
