Ilorin is the capital city of Kwara State located in the Western region of Nigeria. As of the 2006 census, it had a population of 777,667, making it the 7th largest city by population in Nigeria. Surrounding the historic central district with its traditional single-story red-mud houses with thatched straw roofs and numerous mosques, all protected by a mud wall, the modern city is an industrial, commercial, and educational centre.
Kwara State is a state in Western Nigeria, bordered to the east by Kogi State, to the north by Niger state, and to the south by Ekiti, Osun, and Oyo states, while its western border makes up part of the international border with Benin Republic. Its capital is the city of Ilorin and the state has 16 local government areas.
Abubakar Bukola SarakiMBBS is a Nigerian politician who served as the 13th president of the Nigerian Senate from 2015 to 2019. He previously served as the governor of Kwara State from 2003 to 2011; and was elected to the Senate in 2011, under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing the Kwara Central Senatorial District, and then re-elected in the 2015 general elections under the party of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gbemisola Ruqayyah Saraki is a Nigerian politician who served as the Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development of Nigeria since 6 July 2022 till 29th May 2023. She served earlier as the Minister of State for Transportation from 2019 till she was moved by the President to the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development in 2022.
Abubakar Olusola Saraki was a Nigerian politician, who was a Senator in the Nigerian Second Republic (1979–1983). He was the holder of the chieftaincy title of the Waziri of the Ilorin Emirate, and belonged to the Agoro compound in Agbaji.
Mohammed Alabi Lawal was a Nigerian naval officer who was military governor of Ogun State between December 1987 and August 1990 during the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida. He was one of the pioneers of the Nigeria Navy Secondary School Abeokuta.The then Navy Captain Mohammed Lawal, invited the Nigerian Navy to consider a location of the defunct St Leo's Teachers' Training College at Ibara Abeokuta (www.nnssab.net)on a hilly Onikolobo site. This premises had been abandoned and merely serve as a route to the Catholic Compound and was also used for administering a newly conceived secondary school in that name. The Nigerian Navy considered the site and found it suitable. After the return to democracy in 1999 he was elected governor of Kwara State, holding office from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2003.
The Ilorin Sallah stampede was a human stampede that occurred at Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, North-central Nigeria on Eid al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan in 2013. The stampede resulted in the death of 20 people and left several others severely injured. Four people died the first day, and 16 more over the next few days. The incident occurred on 16 October 2013 at Senator Bukola Saraki's house. Saraki is the two-term governor of Kwara State and the incumbent President of the Senate of Nigeria.
Rafiu Adebayo Ibrahim PhD, FCIB was a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from Kwara State. He represented Kwara South Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly. Kwara Central Senatorial District covering mainly the city of Ilorin is a metropolitan senatorial district of all the three in Kwara State. Kwara Central Senatorial Districts covers four local governments which include Asa, Ilorin East, Ilorin South and Ilorin West. Bukola Saraki, the President of the 8th National Assembly is from this district. The current representative of Kwara Central Senatorial District is Ibrahim Oloriegbe of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

It is a unicameral legislature having 24 members elected from the 16 local government areas of the state. Local government areas with considerable lager population are delineated into two constituencies to give equal representation. The 2019 Kwara State gubernatorial election occurred on March 9, 2019. APC's AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq polled 73.12% of the total votes, ahead of PDP's Razak Atunwa who got 25.31% of votes trailing behind by a margin of 216,792 votes, and several minor party candidates. APC won in all 16 LGAs of the state.
The 2023 Kwara State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Kwara State, concurrent with elections to the Kwara State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has been renominated by his party.
