Kolej Yayasan UEM or KYUEM (formerly known as Kolej Matrikulasi Yayasan Saad) is a Malaysian private boarding school in Lembah Beringin, Selangor, Malaysia. It is owned by Yayasan UEM, and is also part of the UEM Group. KYUEM offers the A-Level program under the Cambridge Assessment International Education examination board.

Planned by Tan Sri Halim Saad, Kolej Matrikulasi Yayasan Saad (as it was then known) is a residential college, modelled after British boarding schools. The teaching staff consists of Malaysians as well as expatriate teachers. KYUEM is known to be a 'premier' A-Levels college, with its students consistently attaining Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards and securing offers into the highest-ranking universities.

Overview

KYUEM boards about 525 students mostly between the ages of 16 and 20. The college is led by a headmaster, who is appointed by the Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees. Each house is overseen by a houseparent, typically selected from the teaching or administrative staff.[ citation needed ]

Almost all of the school's graduates achieve conditional offers into universities through the UCAS application process, several to Oxford or Cambridge every year and a majority to universities such as University College London, Imperial College London, University of Warwick, London School of Economics, King's College London, University of Edinburgh and The University of Manchester. Some of the graduates studied at universities in the United States such as MIT, UC Berkeley, Princeton University and Harvard University. [1]

Curriculum

In addition to the core A-level subjects, it is compulsory for students to take the IELTS as it is an admissions criteria for universities in the United Kingdom.

Most students at the school take four A-Level subjects, but many also take three. The A-Level subjects offered are: [2]

Facilities

Students either live in one of the 104 houses or villas - 42 for male and 62 for female students;[ needs update ] one of the 8 villas - 5 for male and 3 for female students; or the apartments usually housing girls. A new block was completed in July 2006. The second floor of the block is used by the Arts department for classes, whereas the old Arts department classes (on the ground floor of the Academic Block) were converted into science laboratories. The teachers and staff live in apartments provided on-site.[ citation needed ]

The college has 10 science laboratories, two lecture theatres, three IT laboratories which supply access to the internet connection and air-conditioned classes. Initially, there was only one academic block, with only eight science laboratories. However, a new block was added in 2006, and the non-laboratory classes on the ground floor were renovated to become two science laboratories.[ citation needed ]

The college has an Olympic-size swimming pool, a football field, two basketball courts, two tennis courts, two volleyball court, and a multipurpose hall for squash, futsal badminton, or a basketball court (not simultaneously).[ citation needed ]


Students at KYUEM are sorted into four houses: Diamond, Garnet, Sapphire and Topaz.[ citation needed ]

Kolej Yayasan Saad (KYS), formerly known as the Saad Foundation College, was established by Tan Sri Halim Saad as a private, entirely residential institution in 1995. It was built as a tribute to his late father. The school is located in Ayer Keroh, Malacca. In both the Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams, the school is popularly known for achieving outstanding outcomes. Additionally, the school is also known for its wide variety of co-curricular activities such as rugby, netball, swimming,triathlon, orchestra and also debate. The school only accepts scholars who demonstrate merit. Students who want to be admitted into this school submit their applications online, where their applications has to go through stringent selection process that takes into account their academic standing, potential for leadership, and extracurricular engagement. The defending champions, Sekolah Sukan Tengku Mahkota Ismail were shocked by their first defeat in the tournament after two undefeated editions which led to its failure of retaining the NJ Ryan Cup. However, it wrapped up this edition as Bowl champion. After two editions, the host, Malay College Kuala Kangsar, finally were crowned as the new champions, defeating Sekolah Menengah Sains Hulu Selangor in Cup final with score 19–7.

The MCKK Premier 7's 2014 was the fourth edition of the annual, invitational Malay College Rugby Premier Sevens, which involved teams from Malaysia premier schools, states champions and international schools. It was scheduled from 28 February till 2 March 2014. For the fourth edition of the Tournament, the number of international teams invited has increased from three teams in the previous Tournament to five teams. This year, teams from New Zealand and South Africa, two Test Playing Rugby Nations, will feature for the first time in the Tournament together with debutant Singapore. Thailand and Hong Kong will also be returning this year. The tournament is also on the verge of being recognized by International Rugby Board with help by Malaysian Rugby Union. The tagline for this tournament is "Premiering Talent and Sportsmanship". Initially, Brunei Sports School were confirmed of participating the events before pulling out in the final minute.
