Sunway College is a private college based in Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. It was established on 25 July 1987 by Jeffrey Cheah. [1] It has a 10-hectare (24 acre) campus comprising academic and residential blocks adjacent to the Sunway Lagoon theme park. [2] [3]

In addition to the Bandar Sunway campus, there are also colleges in Johor Bahru, Ipoh, Kuching and in Kuala Lumpur @ Velocity. [4] [5] The college offers a number of international sixth form, university foundation, diploma and professional courses. In some campuses, Victoria University, Australia undergraduate courses are offered as external and/or twinning courses. [6]

History

In 1987, Sunway College was established by its Founder, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, AO. Within a short span of time, Sunway became a popular household name as a private higher education institution in Malaysia. A pioneer of twinning and credit transfer programmes, Sunway College offers Malaysian and international students the opportunity of obtaining well recognised foreign university qualifications from the UK, Australia and the USA here in Malaysia. As a result of its quality provision and track record of good academic results, Sunway College was upgraded to Sunway University College in 2004. [1]

In January 2011, at the time when Sunway University College became Sunway University, Sunway College was re-formed as an education provider of internationally recognised pre-university, diploma programmes, professional accounting programmes as well as undergraduate twinning degree programme with Victoria University, Australia.

Sunway College and Sunway University are part of the Sunway Education Group, fully owned and governed by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF). The Foundation, launched in March 2010 operates upon the philosophy of Founder, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah, who is passionate about giving back to the community through education via the Sunway Education Trust Fund which was set up in 1997. Sunway College channels its surpluses to provide scholarships and financial support to deserving students. To date, a total of more than RM538 million in scholarships has been disbursed by the Foundation to thousands of deserving students.

The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation champions the spirit of giving back to society and the belief that education transforms lives. Every student and employee at Sunway College is able to contribute in the same way by virtue of the simple fact that we are a part of the Sunway community.

In 2017, the Sunway Education Group celebrated 30 years of academic excellence in its journey towards becoming the country's international education hub. For over 30 years, Sunway College has propelled more than 60,000 students to the university of their choice.

The tradition of academic excellence continues at Sunway College in its wide range of internationally recognised programmes of study, catering to the different learning styles and ambitions of different students.

Sunway College continues in its aim to provide holistic education, nurturing students to be critical thinkers and socially responsible citizens.

Affirming its delivery of high-quality education, conducive study environment and overall learning experience, in the Student Barometer survey (SB Autumn 2018) - a global benchmark survey administered by igraduate, Sunway was Asia's No. 1 in “Laboratories”, “Physical library”, “Technology”, “Social facilities” and “Campus buildings” as well as Malaysia's No. 1 for “Overall” satisfaction.

In the Malaysian Quality Evaluation System for Private Colleges (MyQuest) 2018–2019, [7] Sunway College received 6 stars in 5 core quality criteria, which are student profile, programme recognition, graduate recognition, quality of resources and soundness of governance, further proving itself as a leading learning institution in Malaysia. MyQUEST is one of many prestigious and not-to-be-missed ratings for Malaysian private colleges.

Pre-University Studies

At the pre-university studies level, Sunway College offers grade 12 or matriculation studies options from the UK, Australia, Canada together with its own home-grown programmes. The range of pre-university programmes have been carefully designed to suit the different learning preferences of students, and to prepare them for admission to universities of their choice. Professional Accounting Programmes

The award-winning Sunway TES is an integral part of Sunway College. Sunway TES offers internationally well-known professional accounting programmes, namely, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification, ACCA Foundation in Accountancy (ACCA FIA), Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) qualification, Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB).

In 2013, Sunway TES was selected as the Centre for Accountancy Excellence (CAE) by the Government via the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU). In the same year, Sunway TES celebrated its “10 Years Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Platinum Award”. The Platinum status is the highest accreditation awarded by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) in recognition of the high-quality tuition and support offered to ACCA FIA and ACCA students.

In 2014, Sunway TES celebrated its 10-year partnership with ICAEW. In 2015, Sunway TES was appointed as CPA Australia's Registered Tuition Provider. Sunway TES is no stranger to world-class achievements, as they have accumulated 35 ACCA Top Affiliates, 218 World Prize Winners and 682 Malaysian Prize Winners for the ACCA FIA and ACCA programme for 27 years since its incorporation into Sunway College. To date, Sunway TES has nurtured 6,385 CAT graduates and 6,755 ACCA graduates.

Twinning Programmes

Victoria University (VU) in Melbourne, Australia, has a long history of partnership with Sunway which dates to 1994. This strong academic partnership continues at Sunway College today, with offerings that include the VU Bachelor of Business twinning programmes being popular options well recognised by employers and industry. In 2014, Sunway College and VU celebrated 20 years of partnership.

Chartered accountant Professional designation for accountants

Chartered accountants were the first accountants to form a professional accounting body, initially established in Scotland in 1854. The Edinburgh Society of Accountants (1854), the Glasgow Institute of Accountants and Actuaries (1854) and the Aberdeen Society of Accountants (1867) were each granted a royal charter almost from their inception. The title is an internationally recognised professional designation; the certified public accountant designation is generally equivalent to it. Women were able to become chartered accountants only following the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 after which, in 1920, Mary Harris Smith was recognised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and became the first woman chartered accountant in the world.

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants Global professional organization

Founded in 1904, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants(ACCA) is the global professional accounting body offering the Chartered Certified Accountant qualification (ACCA). It has 233,000 members and 536,000 future members worldwide. ACCA's headquarters are in London with principal administrative office in Glasgow. ACCA works through a network of over 110 offices and centres in 51 countries - with 346 Approved Learning Partners (ALP) and more than 7,600 Approved Employers worldwide, who provide employee development. The ACCA also works in India, China and Pakistan.

Jeffrey Cheah Malaysian Billionaire Businessman

Jeffrey Cheah Fook Ling is the founder and current chairman of the Sunway Group, a Malaysian conglomerate operating in 12 industries with core businesses in property and construction. Jeffrey Cheah is Foundation Chancellor of Sunway University in Malaysia. He is also a Founding Trustee of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.

Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, abbreviated TAR UC, is a non-profit, private university college in Malaysia. Named after the country's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, the school was founded in 1969 as Tunku Abdul Rahman College by the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA). Herbert Jeffrey "Jeff" Wooller is an English accountant and educationalist. He is noted for his accountancy tuition initiatives, and for campaigning for reform of his professional institute, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. The Jeffrey Cheah Institute on Southeast Asia (JCI) is an independent Malaysian think tank established in March 2014 with a focus on key public policy concerns in Southeast Asia. It is based at Sunway University in the Malaysian state of Selangor.
