The Kolkata Diocese is one of the 30 dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

History

This diocese was part of the Outside Kerala (Bahyakerala) diocese earlier. The present diocese of Calcutta came into existence in 1979. [1] The Diocese celebrated its silver jubilee in 2004.

Organization

The Orthodox parishes in the North and North Eastern states of India, Kuwait in the Persian Gulf region are included in this diocese, viz. Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, parts of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur. The Diocesan headquarters is in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. This was consecrated by Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews I, the Catholicose in 1986.

The founder Bishop, Stephanos Mar Theodosius, lived in St. Thomas Ashram, Kailash Nagar, Bhilai. The Diocesan Metropolitan is also the Director of St. Thomas Orthodox Church Mission, one of the pioneer missions outside Kerala. The Mission is mainly concerned with Education and Social Development.

The diocese manages 25 schools, one Arts and Science Post Graduate & B.Ed. College and an Engineering College( CCET-Bhilai ). It has village mission projects in numerous villages.

The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church (MOSC) also known as the Malankara Church and the Indian Orthodox Church, is an autocephalous (independent) church based in Kerala, India. It is part of the Major Archiepiscopal Churches of the Catholic Church that are not distinguished with a patriarchal title. It is headed by Major Archbishop Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Maphrian of the Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum based in Kerala, India.

Mar Gregorios Orthodox Christian Student Movement (MGOCSM) is the oldest Christian Student Organization in Asia. It is the student wing of the Indian Orthodox Church, officially known as the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church with headquarters at Devalokam, Kottayam, Kerala, India.

Easow Mar Timotheos was an Indian episcopa (bishop) of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church, an Indian Christian church tracing back to Thomas the Apostle in the 1st century. He was a bishop from 1975 to 1988, and a missionary priest before that.
