Kristian Hargreaves is a fictional character from the British soap opera Hollyoaks , played by Max Brown. The character debuted on-screen during the episode broadcast on 22 October 2002. Brown made his finale appearance as Kristian during the episode broadcast on 30 July 2004.
Max Brown had previously worked as an extra actor in "walk-on parts" in Hollyoaks and another Channel 4 soap opera, Brookside . [1] Working as an extra on Hollyoaks was Brown's first television work. [2] He was cast into the role of Kristian in 2004. Brown came to producers attentions when he originally auditioned for the role of Jake Dean, which Kevin Sacre secured. [3] Kristian was introduced as one of four new male characters introduced in late 2002. [4] Of joining the cast, Brown told Paul Brooks from Soaplife that "it's great. The cast are young and we have a lot of good comedy." [2] Brown made his first appearance as Kristian during the episode broadcast on 22 October 2002. [5] In 2003, Brown revealed he was content in staying with Hollyoaks for the foreseeable future. [3]
Kristian is characterised as an "intelligent and charming student" who arrives in Hollyoaks to study molecular biology. [6] A writer from the official Hollyoaks website revealed that Kristian is "intelligent, charming and witty, he's also prone to arrogance and appearing patronising." [7] Brown said that Kristian was enjoyable to play because he is "so big-headed and arrogant". He also said that Kristian has a "dark side" because there have been situations he has found himself in which left viewers feeling unsure. Also admitting he had wanted the programme to explore Kristian's past and hoped it would be "dark". [3]
In Kristian's backstory, both of his parents work as barristers. [7] Brown told Soaplife's Brooks that Kristian is nineteen when he is introduced into the series. He is from a "wealthy family" and is portrayed as "a rebel who's very intelligent and self-assured". [2] Brown revealed that Kristian is a cross between a hunk and a cad, he is "a flirt with all the female students, but he's also a bit of a cad with it, too." [2] Kristian chose to study in Chester "as an act of rebellion" against his parents wishes. They wanted him to attend Oxford or Cambridge university. He lives up to his rebellious nature by flirting with fellow students and involving himself in "fun and games". [2]
When he is introduced into the series, Kristian has a casual sex with Izzy Cornwell (Elize du Toit), but writers did not develop it further. [2] He concluded that was "some pretty dramatic stuff" planned for his character's 2002 festive stories. [2] In one storyline Kristian is involved in a potholing accident. The scenes were filmed on location in Snowdonia. A spokesperson for the serial described the scenes as "life and death situations". [8] While in another, Kristian is paired with Lisa Hunter (Gemma Atkinson). Brown said it was a "steamy romance" which leads Kristian into trouble. [3]
It 2004, it was reported by Martin Coutts from Daily Mirror that producers were considering writing Kristian out of the series, along with several other characters. [9] Brown made his finale appearance as Dan during the episode broadcast on 30 July 2004. [10]
Kristian arrives in Hollyoaks as a student studying molecular biology at Hollyoaks Community College. Kristian moves into Tony Hutchinson’s (Nick Pickard) student house, but when Tony decides to sell up, Kristian has to move to Nick O'Connor (Darren Bransford) and Jodie Nash's (Kate McEnery) flat. Kristian gains female attention from Izzy, Becca Hayton (Ali Bastian), and Jodie.
Kristian organises a potholing trip, which ends in disaster when both Theo Sankofa (Andrew Somerville) and Jamie Nash (Stefan Booth) die. After recovering, Kristian enters a ‘Big Brother’ style reality show where he attracts many teenage girls, including Lisa. Soon, Lisa has a crush on him and Kristian begin to date her but makes her promise to keep it a secret. Kirstian realises Lisa is still a virgin. He then dumps her which leads to Lisa seducing Cameron Clark (Ben Gerrard) and losing her virginity to him. She then gets back with Kristian but Lisa’s brother, Dan Hunter (Andrew McNair), finds out about the two dating and warns Kristian off.
Failing to keep any women, Kristian feels lonely and found the company of Jodie as the pair end up sleeping together. This soon ends when Jodie leaves Hollyoaks because she fails her course. Kristian begins to have one-night stands, one such night with Mel Burton (Cassie Powney) leaves her hurt by the way he treats her. He dates Stacey Foxx (Jemma Keys), which turns into a nightmare as she is on his case 24/7 with an annoying laugh. Desperate to get rid of her, he tells Stacey that he is gay and in a relationship with Nick. Kristian then transfers to another university to get away from Stacy.
A reporter from Shropshire Star described Kristian as the show's "heartthrob student". [11] Soaplife's Paul Brooks branded the character Hollyoaks' "new hunk". [2]
Hollyoaks is a British soap opera which originally began airing on Channel 4 on 23 October 1995. It was created by Phil Redmond, who had previously conceived the soap opera Brookside. From 2005 to 2023, episodes have aired on sister channel E4 a day prior to their broadcast on Channel 4. In 2023, Hollyoaks was removed from Channel 4's early evening schedule, but remains on E4 and Channel 4's on demand service with episodes now uploaded to YouTube.
Lisa Hunter is a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Gemma Atkinson. She made her first appearance during the episode broadcast on 23 April 2001. The character is noted for her storylines including bullying and self-harming. After her exit from Hollyoaks, Atkinson reprised the role twice in two spin-off series. In November 2021, it was announced that Atkinson would be returning to Hollyoaks for a guest appearance, with her return airing in March 2022.
Max Cunningham is a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Ben Sheriff from 1995 to 1997, and Matt Littler from 1997 to 2008. He first appeared on 13 November 1995, and Littler took over the role in September 1997. In 2008, Max was the second longest running character in Hollyoaks, after Tony Hutchinson. In May 2008, it was announced that Littler had decided to leave the show and would depart in July 2008.
Jake Dean is a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Kevin Sacre. Sacre portrayed the character between 2002 and 2008, before making a return on 5 October 2009. In March 2010, Sacre was axed from the series by Paul Marquess during his major revamp and cast cull. Jake made his last appearance on 6 August 2010.
Steph Roach is a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Carley Stenson. She debuted on-screen during the episode airing on 29 March 2000. Toby is introduced into the series as a university student and a pub barman. He was originally characterised as a risk-taker and a loyal friend. Producers decided to transform Toby into the show's first serial killer. His murder spree plays largely into his characterisation as writers displayed his anger issues and relationship issues.
Sam "O.B." O'Brien is a fictional character in the long-running Channel 4 British television soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Darren Jeffries. He debuted on-screen on 6 October 1997 before leaving on 26 February 2008. He later made a brief return in July 2008 before leaving on 11 July 2008. He returned on screen in November 2016. Whilst on the show, O.B.'s storylines revolved around his friendship with Max Cunningham and several relationships. The character has been described as iconic and is most notable for his "classic comedy duo" status with Max. Jefferies was nominated for several awards for his time on the show. During a Hollyoaks live video in October 2016, it was revealed Darren Jeffries would be returning to the role after 8 years away. O.B returned on 17 November 2016 and made his last appearance on 2 January 2017.
Helen Cunningham is a fictional character from the British soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Kathryn George. The character debuted on-screen during the episode broadcast on 8 September 1997. Helen was centric to several storylines including her marriage with Gordon Cunningham, dealing with the suicide of her son Lewis Richardson and her daughter Mandy Richardson's abuse at the hands of her ex-husband, Dennis Richardson. Producers also created an advanced maternal age storyline for the character, where she becomes pregnant with Gordon's child and gives birth to Tom Cunningham. In 2003, writers featured Helen in an infidelity story with Tony Hutchinson. Helen and Tony, who is younger engage in a sexual affair which nearly ruins her on-screen partnership with Gordon.
Anna Green is a fictional character from the British soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Lisa M. Kay. The character made her first on-screen appearance on 15 September 1999. Anna is introduced into the series as one of five new students arriving to study at the Hollyoaks Community College. Anna is characterised as "dowdy", "prim and proper" and unlucky in love. She is often seen wearing her trademark glasses, which Kay believed did not suit the character. Anna received a style transformation as writers evolved her character into a more confident personality. Writers developed a friendship between Geri Hudson which helped make Anna more empowered. Geri also helped Anna overcome her failed first romance with Sam Smallwood. One of the character's first prominent stories was being run over in a hit and run incident. The perpetrators, Cindy Cunningham and Ben Davies evade justice and allow Tony Hutchinson to be accused of the crime. Anna later discovers Ben's involvement and forms an unlikely friendship with him. Writers paired Anna with fellow student character, Alex Bell and the relationship went onto define the character's later stories.
Geri Hudson is a fictional character from the British soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Joanna Taylor. The character made her first on-screen appearance on 13 September 1999. Taylor made her final appearance as Geri during the episode broadcast on 19 December 2001.
Ellie Mills is a fictional character from the British soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Sarah Baxendale. The character made her first on-screen appearance on 15 February 2002. Ellie is part of the show's Hunter family. She had been referenced on-screen numerous times as her family were searching for her after she goes missing in Ibiza. She later arrives in Chester which shocks her family. Ellie is characterised as a confident and independent female but has selfish tendencies. Ellie's stories have revolved around her relationships, especially with Toby Mills, who she later marries. Writers portrayed Toby as a serial killer who goes on a prolonged murder spree in the community. Writers embroiled Ellie into his crimes and she choses not to report him to the police. Ellie later fears for her safety and flees to Liverpool. The scenes formed part of a late-night spin-off episode titled Hollyoaks: Leap of Faith, which featured Toby's death. Ellie was featured in one of the show's biggest stunts when she and Toby fall from a one-hundred foot building. Ellie survives and later allows her brother, Dan Hunter to take the blame for the murders. Ellie's lies are soon discovered and she is arrested and put on trial for covering up Toby's murders.
Ruth Osborne is a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Terri Dwyer. She first appeared in January 1996 as the cousin of Natasha Andersen, and departed in 2001. She made guest appearances between 2003 and 2004, and another in 2008. Dwyer expressed interest in returning full-time in 2009.
Nicholas "Nick" O'Connor is a fictional character from the British soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Darren Bransford. The character debuted on-screen during the episode broadcast on 17 September 2001. Bransford made his finale appearance as Nick during the episode broadcast on 3 November 2004.
Texas Savage is a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Bianca Hendrickse-Spendlove. She debuted on-screen during the episode airing on 17 May 2010. Texas was introduced by producer Paul Marquess as the on-screen sister of India Longford. Texas was initially portrayed as a "quite light and quite daft" character. Her first main storyline began in the aftermath of India's murder, her subsequent grief storyline and later being targeted by Silas Blissett. Texas has also featured in the online spin-off series, Hollyoaks: Freshers. In February 2013 it was announced that Texas would depart the serial as she was murdered in a "whodunit" storyline. She departed in a flashback on 13 May 2013 after it was revealed her husband, Will Savage, had pushed her out of the window at the wedding venue.
Dan Hunter is a fictional character from the British soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Andy McNair. The character debuted on-screen during the episode broadcast on 19 April 2001. McNair attended an audition for the role and was called back for a second audition, after which he was informed he had won the role. Dan is characterised as "moody and non-conformist" and has an anger problem. McNair believed Dan is defined by his miserable personality. He never became bored of playing the character's misery and admired his characterisation. He is initially portrayed as a loner who is disinterested in romance due to the pressure of working at his family garage business. Writers portrayed the illness diabetes via Dan and he takes insulin to control his condition. McNair found the story challenging to portray and thoroughly researched the condition to add authenticity to the character.
