Kupittaa (Swedish : Kuppis) is a district in Turku, Finland. It is located on the eastern side of the city's centre, around the Kupittaa Park, the first landscaped park in a Finnish city. The district serves as a centre for recreation and business. Turku has recently planned a residential area for 750 residents on the premises of a former HKScan sausage factory. [1]
The name Kupittaa may be associated with an old border and may be related to the word kupitsa, a name for a boundary mark. [2] Another theory is that it comes from the Slavic word for a merchant, kupets.
According to a version of the legend, the first pagan Finns were baptised into Christianity by the Bishop Henry at a spring in Kupittaa Park on Midsummer Day in the year 1155. In the 18th century, the spring was used as a spa facility.
Most of the Turku Science Park business centre is located in Kupittaa. The centre is currently expanding around Kupittaa railway station, next to Finnish national road 1 (part of European route E18) between Helsinki and Turku.
The area hosts, among other things, numerous sports facilities, such as the Veritas Stadion, a Pesäpallo (Finnish baseball) stadium, a velodrome, a bowling alley, a skateboarding area and a BMX track, and the Kupittaa open-air swimming pools. [3] The ice hockey arena in the district was demolished in 2005. A new one was inaugurated in November 2006.
The Veritas Stadion is used by the association football team FC Inter Turku, who comepete in the Veikkausliiga.
The Turku Hippodrome or Kupittaa Racecourse was a racetrack located north of Hippoxentie (next to the Veritas Stadion) between 1902 and 1973. Turku Hippos, founded in 1894, began planning the construction of its own track immediately after its establishment. A suitable place was found when the Turku Sniper Battalion moved its shooting range from Kupittaa to Kärsämäki in 1899. Ravirata started operating three years later.
In the 1970s, Kupitta started to become too cramped for the operation of the race track. In addition, the old-fashioned track no longer met the requirements of the time. The last races at the Kupittaa racetrack were held on 9 September 1973. Today, only the kiosk building completed in 1948, remains of the Kupittaa racetrack. The wooden kiosk designed by architect Erik Bryggman is protected.
There was also a motorcycle speedway track on the infield of the race track, where the first competition of the sport was held in Finland in 1949. It hosted significant events including a qualifying rounds of the Speedway World Championship in 1955 and 1959 [4] and the Finnish Speedway Championship in 1956, 1958, 1961, 1973 and 1976. [5]
In addition, there was also a greyhound track in the area, where the 1981 Nordic championships were organised. The Greyhound track ceased operations in the early 1980s.

Varissuo is a district and the largest suburb of the city of Turku, in Finland. It is located seven kilometres to the east of the city centre, and is the easternmost major suburb of Turku, bordering on the neighbouring city of Kaarina. The VIII District, also known as Port Arthur, is one of the central districts of Turku, Finland. It is located on the west side of the river Aura, between Puistokatu and the IX District (Länsiranta). The district consists mostly of wooden houses, separated by narrow streets paved with cobblestones. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful residential districts in the whole of Finland, and has received an award to that effect in 2001. Port Arthur is one of the most expensive districts in Turku to live in.
Turku Central Station is a railway station in the VII District of Turku, Finland. It has VR services to Helsinki and towards Joensuu. The station serves approximately a million passengers annually.
Itäharju is a district in the Itäharju-Varissuo ward of the city of Turku, in Finland. It is located to the east of the city centre, and consists mostly of industrial area, brownfields and low-density residential area. Since the beginning of the 2000s the trend of renovating old industrial buildings to offices has sprawled over from the neighboring Kupittaa to Itäharju as well.
The Market Square is a city square in the city of Turku, in Finland. It is located in the city's VI District, and is generally considered the city's central square. It hosts a lively market on weekdays, and there are several cafés and restaurants on the square.
Kupittaa railway station is located in the Kupittaa district of Turku, Finland. The station is located about three kilometres from the Turku Central railway station in the immediate vicinity of the Turku Science Park. All trains between Helsinki and Turku stop at Kupittaa. However, due to construction work between here and Turku, Kupittaa is the terminus of the min from Helsinki from August 2022 until the end of 2024. Signalling is handled from Turku Central railway station. The station has bus connections to Föli lines 32, 42, 58 and 110.
Vartiovuori Observatory is a former observatory in Turku, Finland. The observatory, designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, was originally built for the Royal Academy of Turku. The neoclassical building was completed in 1819. The observatory is situated atop the Vartiovuori hill, and it is clearly visible from different sides of the city centre.
Puutori is a market square in the city centre of Turku, Finland. It measures at approximately 100 by 40 metres. It is bordered by Aninkaistenkatu/Aningaisgatan, Maariankatu/Mariegatan, Brahenkatu/Brahegatan and Sibeliuksenkatu/Sibeliusgatan. Today, it has no regular market square activity but Puutorin puolesta ry organises different events there each year. Located at one end of the square are Ystävyydenpuisto and Wäinö Aaltonen's statue Kun ystävyyssuhteet solmitaan, which was designed in 1955 in honour of the friendship between Turku and Göteborg. There are also small cafés and shops surrounding Puutori, as well as a pet store.
The Old Great Square is a medieval market square located in the city centre of Turku, Finland. It is located in the II District in very close proximity to Turku Cathedral. The area was the administrative and commercial centre of Turku since the founding of the city in the 13th century up until the Great Fire of Turku.
Kankainen Manor is a late medieval manor in Masku, Finland, located along a small river about one kilometre south of Masku town centre. Kankainen Manor is considered to be the oldest surviving residential building in Finland, as its oldest parts may be from the end of the 15th century. In 2009, the Finnish Heritage Agency defined it as one of Finland's nationally significant built cultural environments.
Pinella was a restaurant in the Porthaninpuisto park in central Turku, Finland, next to the Turku Cathedral. The restaurant was run by Sunborn Group. Pinella was one of the oldest restaurants in Finland in terms of length of operation.
The Phoenix Hotel was a hotel located in Turku, Finland, on the edge of the Market Square along the street Kirkkokatu, which operated from 1878 to 1922. The building was known as the Phoenix House even when it was the main building of the private University of Turku, founded in 1920. The Phoenix House was demolished in 1959.
Sirkkalankatu is a street in Turku. It runs for approximately 1.5 km in the city's I, II and III District beginning at Joukahaisenkatu and ending at Kivenhakkaajankatu near the Turku Sports Park.
Yliopistonkatu is a 1,5-kilometer-long street located in the city center of Turku, Finland, running parallel to the Aura River, starting at Kutomonkatu and ending at Koulukatu. Since 2001, the part of Yliopistonkatu between Aurakatu and Humalistonkatu, which is about four hundred meters long, has been a pedestrian street. The area of the current pedestrian street has been Turku's Christmas street since 1948. The Turku Market Square is also located along Yliopistonkatu.
Valentin Purosalo is a Finnish professional footballer who plays as a right-back for Veikkausliiga club Inter Turku and the Finland U19 national team.
