Kurixalus absconditus is only known from near Piasak, West Kalimantan, Borneo

Kurixalus absconditus is a species of frog in the family Rhacophoridae. [3] [4] [5] It is endemic to West Kalimantan, in the Indonesian part of Borneo near the village of Piasak; it is likely to occur more widely. [3] The specific name absconditus is Latin for "disguised", "concealed", or "hidden", and refers to this species remaining "undetected" within the Kurixalus appendiculatus group. [2] Common name Piasak-frilled swamp treefrog, [2] also spelled Piasak frilled swamp tree frog, [5] has been coined for it. [1]

Description

The type series consists of one adult male measuring 27 mm (1.1 in) and two juveniles 17–20 mm (0.7–0.8 in) in snout–vent length. The head is longer than it is wide. The snout has pointed tip. The tympanum is distinct but small. The supratympanic fold is present. The limbs are slender. The finger and toe tips are expanded into round discs; those of fingers are larger than the toe ones. Finger webbing is poorly developed while toe webbing is moderately developed. The upper eyelids have a series of rounded small tubercles. The dorsum is brown with green speckles and a sparse and disjointed of dark brown saddle-shaped mark. The flanks are brown with few green speckles. The groin is whitish. The iris is bright gold and has distinct black reticulation and a black scleral ring. [2]

Male advertisement call, females, and tadpoles of this species are not known. [2] Scientists infer that this frog breeds by larval development and that the tadpoles swim in streams, but as of 2021, they have not confirmed this. [1]

Habitat and conservation

The type series was collected from a shrub swamp habitat close to secondary swamp forest at an elevation of 50 m (160 ft) above sea level. It shared this habitat with the frogs Amnirana nicobariensis , Chalcorana raniceps , Hylarana erythraea , Polypedates colletti , Pulchrana baramica , and Limnonectes paramacrodon . Individuals of Kurixalus absconditus were found clinging to a tree trunk and perched on leaves some 0.70–1.9 m (2–6 ft) above the ground. [2]

The Rhacophoridae are a family of frogs that occur in tropical sub-Saharan Africa, South India and Sri Lanka, Japan, northeastern India to eastern China and Taiwan, south through the Philippines and Greater Sundas, and Sulawesi. They are commonly known as shrub frogs, or more ambiguously as "moss frogs" or "bush frogs". Some Rhacophoridae are called "tree frogs". Among the most spectacular members of this family are numerous "flying frogs".

Rhacophorus Genus of amphibians

Rhacophorus is a genus of frogs in the shrub-frog family Rhacophoridae, which, with the related Hylidae, is one of the two genera of true tree frogs. They are found in China, India, Japan, and throughout Southeast Asia, including the island of Borneo. Over 40 species are currently recognised.

Kurixalus Genus of amphibians

Kurixalus is a genus of frogs in the family Rhacophoridae. The taxonomy of small rhacophids is difficult and has been subject to many revisions, but molecular genetic data do support monophyly of Kurixalus. These frogs are distributed from Himalayan front ranges of eastern India southward and eastward to Cambodia, Vietnam, southern China, Taiwan, and the Ryukyu Islands.

Meristogenys amoropalamus is a species of frog in the family Ranidae. It is endemic to northern Borneo and occurs in northwestern Sabah and northeastern Sarawak (Malaysia) and in northeastern Kalimantan (Indonesia). Common names mountain Borneo frog and mountain torrent frog have been coined for it. Studies of its larvae revealed that the nominal species contained two cryptic forms, and in 2011, Shimada and colleagues described Meristogenys dyscritus as a separate species.

Kurixalus idiootocus Species of amphibian

Kurixalus idiootocus is a small species of frog in the family Rhacophoridae. It is endemic to Taiwan and is commonly known as the temple tree frog. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marshes and irrigated land. It is listed as being of "Least Concern" by the IUCN although there may be some destruction of its habitat.

Nyctixalus pictus Species of amphibian

Nyctixalus pictus, also known as cinnamon frog, cinnamon treefrog, cinnamon bush frog, painted Indonesian treefrog, and white-spotted treefrog, etc., is a species of frog in the family Rhacophoridae. It is found in the Malay Peninsula, the Philippines, and parts of the Greater Sunda Islands.

Philautus ingeri is a species of frog in the family Rhacophoridae. It is endemic to northern Borneo and found in Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and adjacent northern Kalimantan (Indonesia). Philautus mjobergi is a species of frog in the family Rhacophoridae. It is endemic to northern Borneo and found in Kalimantan (Indonesia) and Sarawak (Malaysia). Rhacophorus kio Species of amphibian

Rhacophorus kio is a species of flying frog in the family Rhacophoridae and is found in the rainforests of southeast Asia, in countries such as China, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its ability to glide and its adhesive toe pads make it well adapted to its habitat of the rainforest. Prior to a 2006 study by Annemarie Ohler and Magali Delorme, R. kio and R. reinwardtii were thought to be the same species. The common name black-webbed treefrog can refer to either species. Compared to other frog species in the area, R. kio not only creates a foam nest that holds their eggs, but also creates a structure with leaves that will wrap around the eggs. While the conservation status of the species is currently classified as of least concern by the IUCN Red List, R. kio faces habitat loss from deforestation to make space for agriculture and other human influences.
