Kwara State Polytechnic [1] is a Nigerian tertiary institution that was established in 1973 by the then Military Governor of Kwara State Col. David Bamigboye after the decision to establish a polytechnic in Kwara State was announced in 1971. [2] It is located in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.

History

Kwara State Polytechnic started with 110 pioneering students, and it offers National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in courses at undergraduate levels. [2] [3]

The College eventually came into existence following the promulgation of Kwara State Edict no. 4 of 1972 (now overtaken by the edict no. 21 of 1984 edict No. 13 of 1987 and edict no. 7 of 1994) as a body empowered by statute "to provide for studies, training, research and development of techniques in arts and language, applied sciences, engineering, management and commerce, education and well as in other spheres of learning".

The Kwara State Polytechnic formally commenced operation in January 1973 with an administrative machinery patterned closely after the existing universities in the country. [2]

On 27 October 2019, Kwara State Polytechnic got a new Rector following the approval of the Kwara state Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. The Rector, Engr. Dr Abdul Jimoh Mohammed Succeeded Alhaji Mas'ud Elelu whose tenure ended in June, 2019.

Dr Abdul Jimoh Mohammed was until his appointment Deputy Rector (Academics) at the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State. He holds two doctorate degrees, including one in Metallurgical and Material Science from Witwatersrand University South Africa in 2016. [9] [10]

University of Ilorin, also known as Unilorin, is a federal government-owned university in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. It was established by a decree of the federal military government in August, 1975. The establishment aimed to implement one of the educational directives of the Third National Development Plan, which was aimed at providing more opportunities for Nigerians aspiring to acquire university education and to generate high-level manpower, which is vital for the rapidly expanding economy. Compared to other higher institutions of learning in the country, the institution has one of the largest land areas, covering approximately 15,000 hectares of land. It is reported by Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) to be the most sought-after Nigerian university in 2021. And again in 2023, it was announced by the JAMB Head, Professor Ishaq Oloyede to be the sought-after University, for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME), making it for the 10th consecutive year.

Wing Commander Mohammed Ndatsu Umaru was a Military Governor of Kwara State, Nigeria from August 1985 to December 1987, and then of Kano State from December 1987 to July 1988 during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

Mohammed Alabi Lawal was a Nigerian naval officer who was military governor of Ogun State between December 1987 and August 1990 during the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida. He was one of the pioneers of the Nigeria Navy Secondary School Abeokuta.The then Navy Captain Mohammed Lawal, invited the Nigerian Navy to consider a location of the defunct St Leo's Teachers' Training College at Ibara Abeokuta (www.nnssab.net)on a hilly Onikolobo site. This premises had been abandoned and merely serve as a route to the Catholic Compound and was also used for administering a newly conceived secondary school in that name. The Nigerian Navy considered the site and found it suitable. After the return to democracy in 1999 he was elected governor of Kwara State, holding office from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2003.

Khairat Abdulrazaq-Gwadabe is a Nigerian politician. She was elected Senator for the Abuja Federal Capital Territory constituency, Nigeria at the start of the Nigerian Fourth Republic, running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. She held office from May 1999 to May 2003.

APC won in all 16 LGAs of the state.

Marietu Ohunene Tenuche is a Nigerian academic, author and a professor of political science. She is the fifth and the first female vice chancellor of Kogi State University, now Prince Abubakar Audu University. Tenuche was appointed by the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello to take over from Professor Mohammed Sanni Abdulkadir.

The 2023 Kwara State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Kwara State, concurrent with elections to the Kwara State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Kwara State will be held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Kwara State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.

Shuaib Oba AbdulRaheem is a Nigerian academic and former vice-chancellor of the University of Ilorin who served as chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC). He did his doctorate from University of Kent.
