Kyerwa District is one of the eight districts of the Kagera Region of Tanzania. It is one of the 20 new districts that were formed in Tanzania since 2010; it was split off from Karagwe District. [1] It is bordered to the north by Uganda, to the east by Missenyi District, to the south by Karagwe District and to the west by Rwanda, and has an area of 2,575 square kilometres (994 sq mi). According to the 2012 Tanzania National Census, the population of Kyerwa District was 321,026, with a population density of 120 inhabitants per square kilometre (310/sq mi). [4] [3]

The district is home to the Ibanda-Kyerwa National Park. The park is fed by the Kagera river that sustains animals such as hippos, leopards, antelope and buffalo. [5]

Transport

Unpaved trunk road T39 from Kayanga in Karagwe District to the Ugandan border passes through Kyerwa District from Omurushaka, Nkwenda, Isingiro, Kaisho to Murongo. There is also unpaved road from Kayanga (administrative HQ for Karagwe district) via Rwambaizi, Katera, Businde, Bugomora, Nyamiyaga to Murongo. [6]

Kikagati is a town in the Western Region of Uganda. It sits across the Kagera River from the town of Murongo, in the Kagera Region of Tanzania.

The Mbarara–Kikagati Road is in southwestern Uganda, connecting the city of Mbarara in Mbarara District and the town of Kikagati in Isingiro District, at the border between Uganda and Tanzania. The road continues into Tanzania as Highway B182.

The Ibanda-Kyerwa National Park, previously Ibanda Game Reserve, is a national park in Tanzania. Originally established in 1974, it was designated a national park in 2019. The national park is located in Kagera Region and has an area of 200 square kilometres (77 sq mi). The park is rich in wildlife attractions and sunrise and sunset are easily seen. Animals found in this national park include hippos, antelopes, Thomson gazelles, impalas, elands, and baboons. The park can be reached by flight from Dar es Salaam Airport to Bukoba Airport and then by road from Bukoba town to the park.

Kobero–Bugene–Mutukula–Kikagati Road, also Burundi–Tanzania–Uganda Road, is a road in the Kagera Region of Tanzania. The road connects the border towns of Mutukula and Kikagati in Uganda, to the border town of Kobero, in Burundi. The road allows direct access between Uganda and Burundi, promoting exchange of goods and passengers, avoiding routes through Rwanda, where free movement of Ugandan goods and passengers are restricted, since February 2019.

Isingiro Water Supply and Sanitation Project (IWSSP), also Isingiro Water Supply and Sewerage System is a water intake, purification, distribution and waste water collection and disposal system in Isingiro District, in the Western Region of Uganda. The project is intended to meet the water supply and sanitation needs of 340,000 people of the 550,000 inhabitants of the district. The beneficiaries include the 100,000 occupants of Nakivale Refugee Settlement and the 32,000 occupants of Oruchinga Refugee Settlement. The work is to be carried out by the Uganda Ministry of Water and Environment through the parastatal utility company, National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC). Funding, have been provided by the French Development Agency and the European Union.

Masaka–Mbarara Water Supply and Sanitation Project (MMWSSP), is a water intake, purification, distribution and waste water collection and disposal system in the cities of Masaka and Mbarara in the Central Region and the Western Region of Uganda.
