Kyra Harris Bolden (born July 31,1988) [1] [2] [3] is an American judge,politician,and civil litigation attorney. [4] She has served as an associate justice of the Michigan Supreme Court since January 1,2023. Bolden was a Democratic member of the Michigan House of Representatives for the 35th district from January 1,2019 to January 1,2023.
In her bid for re-election in 2020,Bolden faced Democratic primary challenger Shadia Martini. In the primary,Bolden defeated Martini by 20,981 votes. Bolden went on to be re-elected in the 2020 election,defeating Republican challenger Daniela Davis. [5]
She was a candidate for the Michigan Supreme Court in 2022,but came in third behind incumbents Richard Bernstein and Brian Zahra. [6] On November 22,2022,Bolden was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court by Governor Gretchen Whitmer to replace Bridget Mary McCormack. [7]
A graduate of Southfield Public Schools,Bolden chose to remain in Michigan for her studies,receiving her bachelor's degree from Grand Valley State University and Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. [8]
While working in Lansing,Bolden advocated for Michiganders as a member of the Judiciary Committee and focused her work on criminal justice reform,crafting and passing bipartisan legislation to protect survivors of sexual violence. Bolden passed the “Medically Frail”prison reform package,the revision of the Wrongful Imprisonment Compensation Act,and the “Address Confidentiality for Survivors of Domestic Violence”package. On November 22,2022,Bolden was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court by Governor Gretchen Whitmer to replace Bridget Mary McCormack. [7] Bolden is the first Black woman to serve on the Michigan Supreme Court. [11] Bolden's qualifications for the Supreme Court were that in addition to serving in the legislature for 4 years,she also handled misdemeanor court appointed cases in the 46th District Court sometime between 2014 and 2018. [12]
In 2023,Michigan Supreme Court Justice Richard H. Bernstein drew controversy after Bolden hired Pete Martel,who spent fourteen years in prison for armed robbery before attending Wayne State University Law School,as a law clerk. [13] Bernstein publicly stated that he was "completely disgusted" by Bolden's decision to hire Martel as a law clerk and claimed that he and Justice Bolden "don't share the same values." [13] He also claimed that Bolden's decision to hire Martel would reflect poorly on the entire court and that it was not "fair to the police and the prosecutors" to have a convicted felon working for the court. [14] Bolden confirmed that Martel had resigned from his position as a law clerk due to Bernstein's comments and explained that Martel "did not want to be a distraction or in any way divert the court from its important work." [13] On January 9,2023 Bernstein issued a statement saying he apologized to Bolden in person at the Hall of Justice and that she accepted his apology. [15]
Bolden has received several awards,including the 2019 Detroit Association of Women's Clubs,Inc. “Young Women Lifting As We Climb Image Award”,2019 African American Leadership Awards “Emerging Leader Award”,2020 Michigan Chronicle 40 Under 40 honoree, [16] 2021 Legislative Economic Development Champion Award and the 2021 Michigan Credit Union League “Legislator of the Year”award.
Bolden is a member of the Oakland County Bar Association,Wolverine Bar Association,Straker Bar Association,the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan,National Congress of Black Women-Oakland County,Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority,and as a member of the Total Living Commission for the City of Southfield. Established in 1891 as the Detroit College of Law,it was the first law school in the Detroit,Michigan area and the second in the state of Michigan. In October 2018,the college began a process to fully integrate into Michigan State University,changing from a private to a public law school. Bridget Mary McCormack is an American lawyer,professor,and retired justice. She served on the Michigan Supreme Court from 2013 to 2022,first as an associate justice,and as chief justice from 2019 to 2022. Previously she was a professor at the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor,where she taught criminal law and legal ethics and oversaw the law school's clinical programs as associate dean of clinical affairs. Her academic work focused on practical experience in legal education. McCormack launched and worked in a pediatric advocacy law clinic focusing on children with health problems,and a domestic violence clinic. She retired from the Supreme Court at the end of 2022 and became President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Arbitration Association in February 2023.
Lesbian,gay,bisexual,and transgender (LGBTQ) people in the U.S. state of Michigan enjoy the same rights as non-LGBTQ people. Michigan in June 2024 was ranked "the most welcoming U.S. state for LGBT individuals". Same-sex sexual activity is legal in Michigan under the U.S. Supreme Court case Lawrence v. Texas,although the state legislature has not repealed its sodomy law. Same-sex marriage was legalised in accordance with 2015's Obergefell v. Hodges decision. Discrimination on the basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity is unlawful since July 2022,was re-affirmed by the Michigan Supreme Court - under and by a 1976 statewide law,that explicitly bans discrimination "on the basis of sex". The Michigan Civil Rights Commission have also ensured that members of the LGBT community are not discriminated against and are protected in the eyes of the law since 2018 and also legally upheld by the Michigan Supreme Court in 2022. In March 2023,a bill passed the Michigan Legislature by a majority vote - to formally codify both "sexual orientation and gender identity" anti-discrimination protections embedded within Michigan legislation. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the bill on March 16,2023. In 2024,Michigan repealed “the last ban on commercial surrogacy within the US”- for individuals and couples and reformed the parentage laws,that acknowledges same sex couples and their families with children.

Richard H. Bernstein is an American lawyer and Michigan Supreme Court Justice. He practiced at The Law Offices of Sam Bernstein,his father's law office,in Farmington Hills,Michigan,before being elected to the Michigan Supreme Court. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan and served on the Wayne State University Board of Governors for one eight-year term,including two years as vice chair and two more as chair until deciding not to seek re-election in 2010 for a second term beginning in 2011. In November 2014,Bernstein was elected to serve an 8-year term on the Michigan Supreme Court. Bernstein has been classified as legally blind since birth as a result of retinitis pigmentosa.

The Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA),or Public Act 453 of 1976,which went into effect in 1977,originally prohibited discrimination in Michigan only on the basis of "religion,race,color,national origin,age,sex,height,weight,familial status,or marital status" in employment,housing,education,and access to public accommodations. A ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court on July 28,2022 expanded the scope of the law to explicitly include protections for LGBT people. Sexual orientation and gender identity were both formally codified and added to Michigan legislation officially on March 16,2023 and became Act 6 of 2023. Other classes added to the law since passage include pregnant workers,workers who seek abortions,and hair style and texture.

The 2022 Michigan gubernatorial election took place on November 8,2022,to elect the governor of Michigan. Incumbent Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer ran for re-election to a second term and faced former political commentator Tudor Dixon in the general election. Whitmer defeated Dixon by a margin of nearly 11 percentage points,a wider margin than polls indicated as well as a wider margin than Whitmer's first victory four years prior. Whitmer won independent voters by double-digit margins,which contributed to Dixon's defeat.
On October 8,2020,the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the arrests of 13 men suspected of orchestrating a domestic terror plot to kidnap American politician Gretchen Whitmer,the Governor of Michigan,and otherwise using violence to overthrow the state government. Some have labeled the attempt as an example of stochastic terrorism,where violent rhetoric by prominent figures inspired the plot.

The 2022 Michigan elections were held on Tuesday,November 8,2022,throughout Michigan. The Democratic Party made historic gains,taking full control of state government for the first time since 1983 and marking a point where Democrats held all four elected statewide offices,both U.S. Senate seats,and both chambers of the Michigan Legislature. Democrats won control of the Michigan House of Representatives for the first time since 2008,and the Michigan Senate for the first time since 1984. Additionally,incumbent Democratic governor Gretchen Whitmer won reelection by a comfortable margin,with Democrats sweeping every statewide office. Furthermore,the Democrats maintained control of seven seats in the U.S. House of Representatives,while the Republican Party took a net loss of one seat. The elections in Michigan were widely characterized as a "blue wave".
Mike Harris is an American politician in the Republican Party serving as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives. His former district,the 43rd,represented areas covering Lake Angelus,Clarkston,Independence Township,and part of Waterford Township. He was elected in a special election in May 2022. In the November 2022 election,he won 59% of the vote. In the 2022 Michigan House of Representatives election,he was redistricted to the 52nd district.
