The Michigan State University College of Law is the law school of Michigan State University,a public research university in East Lansing,Michigan. Established in 1891 as the Detroit College of Law,it was the first law school in the Detroit,Michigan area and the second in the state of Michigan. In October 2018,the college began a process to fully integrate into Michigan State University,changing from a private to a public law school. The integration with Michigan State University was finalized on August 17,2020.

Bridget Mary McCormack is an American lawyer,professor,and retired justice. She served on the Michigan Supreme Court from 2013 to 2022,first as an associate justice,and as chief justice from 2019 to 2022. Previously she was a professor at the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor,where she taught criminal law and legal ethics and oversaw the law school's clinical programs as associate dean of clinical affairs. Her academic work focused on practical experience in legal education. McCormack launched and worked in a pediatric advocacy law clinic focusing on children with health problems,and a domestic violence clinic. She retired from the Supreme Court at the end of 2022 and became President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Arbitration Association in February 2023.
Lesbian,gay,bisexual,and transgender (LGBTQ) people in the U.S. state of Michigan enjoy the same rights as non-LGBTQ people. Michigan in June 2024 was ranked "the most welcoming U.S. state for LGBT individuals". Same-sex sexual activity is legal in Michigan under the U.S. Supreme Court case Lawrence v. Texas,although the state legislature has not repealed its sodomy law. Same-sex marriage was legalised in accordance with 2015's Obergefell v. Hodges decision. Discrimination on the basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity is unlawful since July 2022,was re-affirmed by the Michigan Supreme Court - under and by a 1976 statewide law,that explicitly bans discrimination "on the basis of sex". The Michigan Civil Rights Commission have also ensured that members of the LGBT community are not discriminated against and are protected in the eyes of the law since 2018 and also legally upheld by the Michigan Supreme Court in 2022. In March 2023,a bill passed the Michigan Legislature by a majority vote - to formally codify both "sexual orientation and gender identity" anti-discrimination protections embedded within Michigan legislation. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the bill on March 16,2023. In 2024,Michigan repealed “the last ban on commercial surrogacy within the US”- for individuals and couples and reformed the parentage laws,that acknowledges same sex couples and their families with children.

A member of the Democratic Party,she is a former dean of Wayne State University Law School,a co-founder of the Military Spouses of Michigan,and a board member of the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality. Richard H. Bernstein is an American lawyer and Michigan Supreme Court Justice. He practiced at The Law Offices of Sam Bernstein,his father's law office,in Farmington Hills,Michigan,before being elected to the Michigan Supreme Court. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan and served on the Wayne State University Board of Governors for one eight-year term,including two years as vice chair and two more as chair until deciding not to seek re-election in 2010 for a second term beginning in 2011. In November 2014,Bernstein was elected to serve an 8-year term on the Michigan Supreme Court. Bernstein has been classified as legally blind since birth as a result of retinitis pigmentosa.
The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law is the law school of the University of Detroit Mercy and is located in Downtown Detroit,Michigan across from the Renaissance Center. Founded in 1912,Detroit Mercy Law is a private Roman Catholic law school and has been ABA-accredited since 1933. The Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA),or Public Act 453 of 1976,which went into effect in 1977,originally prohibited discrimination in Michigan only on the basis of "religion,race,color,national origin,age,sex,height,weight,familial status,or marital status" in employment,housing,education,and access to public accommodations. A ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court on July 28,2022 expanded the scope of the law to explicitly include protections for LGBT people. Sexual orientation and gender identity were both formally codified and added to Michigan legislation officially on March 16,2023 and became Act 6 of 2023. Other classes added to the law since passage include pregnant workers,workers who seek abortions,and hair style and texture.

The 2022 Michigan gubernatorial election took place on November 8,2022,to elect the governor of Michigan. Incumbent Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer ran for re-election to a second term and faced former political commentator Tudor Dixon in the general election. Whitmer defeated Dixon by a margin of nearly 11 percentage points,a wider margin than polls indicated as well as a wider margin than Whitmer's first victory four years prior. Whitmer won independent voters by double-digit margins,which contributed to Dixon's defeat.
On October 8,2020,the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the arrests of 13 men suspected of orchestrating a domestic terror plot to kidnap American politician Gretchen Whitmer,the Governor of Michigan,and otherwise using violence to overthrow the state government. Some have labeled the attempt as an example of stochastic terrorism,where violent rhetoric by prominent figures inspired the plot.

The 2022 Michigan elections were held on Tuesday,November 8,2022,throughout Michigan. The Democratic Party made historic gains,taking full control of state government for the first time since 1983 and marking a point where Democrats held all four elected statewide offices,both U.S. Senate seats,and both chambers of the Michigan Legislature. Democrats won control of the Michigan House of Representatives for the first time since 2008,and the Michigan Senate for the first time since 1984. Additionally,incumbent Democratic governor Gretchen Whitmer won reelection by a comfortable margin,with Democrats sweeping every statewide office. Furthermore,the Democrats maintained control of seven seats in the U.S. House of Representatives,while the Republican Party took a net loss of one seat. The elections in Michigan were widely characterized as a "blue wave".
Mike Harris is an American politician in the Republican Party serving as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives. His former district,the 43rd,represented areas covering Lake Angelus,Clarkston,Independence Township,and part of Waterford Township. He was elected in a special election in May 2022. In the November 2022 election,he won 59% of the vote. In the 2022 Michigan House of Representatives election,he was redistricted to the 52nd district.
