The Toktogul Satylganov Kyrgyz National Philharmonic is a landmark building in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and home to musical performances. [1] It is named after Kyrgyz aqyn Toktogul Satylganov.

Building design

The Philharmonic Society, founded on 7 October 1936 on the basis of the orchestra of folk instruments, did not have its own concert hall for many years, with the concerts being staged in the halls of Komvuz as well as the hall of the Ministry of Agriculture. [2] The building has a large hall for 1,108 seats and a small organ hall for 314 seats. [3] The current building was designed by A. Pechenkin and completed in 1980. The building faces city hall. [4] A statue of Manas and fountains are on the grounds. The building's architecture is brutalist from the Soviet era. [5] There was a fire in the building in August 2018. [6]

Events

The Congress of Women of the Kyrgyz Republic hosted 25 U.S. Airmen at the venue in 2010 for International Woman's Day. [7] Four presidential inaugurations have taken place at the philharmonic (Askar Akayev in 2000, [8] Roza Otunbayeva in 2010, [9] [10] [11] Almazbek Atambayev in 2011, and Sadyr Japarov in 2021 [12] ).

Roza Isakovna Otunbayeva is a Kyrgyz diplomat and politician who served as the President of Kyrgyzstan from 7 April 2010 until 1 December 2011, becoming the first female Central Asian head of state. She was sworn in on July 3, 2010, after acting as interim leader following the 2010 April Revolution, which led to the ousting of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. She previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and as head of the parliamentary caucus for the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan. She is also known in Kyrgyzstan for the persecution of human rights activist Azimzhan Askarov and the failed policy that led to the bloody events of June 2010.

The National Library of the Kyrgyz Republic is the legal deposit and copyright agency for Kyrgyzstan. It was founded in 1934. It has a collection of 6 million documents in 89 languages from around the world. Since 2005 the head of the Kyrgyz National Library is Dr. Jyldyz Bakashova. According to the website, some of the primary functions of the National Library in Kyrgyzstan are “preserving the cultural wealth and traditions of the peoples of our country, collecting and accumulating human knowledge.”

Tyntchtykbek Kadyrmambetovich Tchoroev (Chorotegin) (Kyrgyz: Тынчтыкбек Чороев, is a Kyrgyz historian, publicist and journalist. President of the Kyrgyz History Society, Doctor of History, Professor of the Kyrgyz State National University named after Jusup Balasagyn. Tchoroev is well known as an independent history researcher, Turkologist and journalist. Until September 2011, he worked as a broadcaster at Radio Azattyk, i.e. Kyrgyz Service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. He was chairman of the Board of the Muras Foundation under the Office of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Toktogul Square is a square in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on Teatralnaya Street. It is named in honor Kyrgyz musician Toktogul Satilganov, with a statue to him also on the square. There are many buildings on the square, including the Kyrgyz Union for Consumer Goods, Museum of Fine Arts, Hotel "Kyrgyzstan", and the Opera and Ballet Theater.

Kuluypa Konduchalova was a Kyrgyz-Soviet teacher, politician and cultural minister. She is most-known as a patron of culture and for the work she did to promote Kyrgyz arts to international audiences. She was honored as a Hero of the Kyrgyz Republic, twice honored with the Order of Manas in the 1st and 3rd degrees, decorated as a Commander of the Order of Lenin and was twice awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour.

The State Committee for National Security is the national agency responsible for intelligence on counter terrorism and organised crime in Kyrgyzstan. The Ala-Archa Cemetery is a public cemetery for honoured individuals in Kyrgyzstan. It is located on Abdumomunova Street in Bishkek to the west of the Avenue of the Young Guards. It is near the Ala Archa National Park in the Tian Shan mountains. It was opened in 1948 and currently occupies 31 hectares of land. It has historical and cultural significance in the City of Bishkek due to its regular use by order of the Government of Kyrgyzstan for the burial and/or re-burial of Kyrgyz citizens who held the status of political or public status such as former Prime Ministers as well as distinguished persons in the fine arts. It has served this purpose since 1973, when the Executive Committee of the Frunze City Council repurposed it taking into account the limited space available at the time.

Fedor Ivanovich Samokhin was a Soviet prose writer, journalist, translator, member of the Union of writers of the USSR. One of the representatives of "village" and "lieutenant" prose. The oldest Russian writer of Kyrgyzstan, whose works reflect the life of the people of the republic, its history and modernity. For his achievements in the field of fiction and for his active participation in the promotion and development of Kyrgyz Soviet literature, he was awarded three Honorary Diplomas of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kirghiz SSR.

Raimbek Matraimov is a Kyrgyz politician. He was the deputy chair of the State Customs Service of Kyrgyzstan. After being fired in late 2017, Matraimov became a central figure in an ongoing large scale money-laundering case, one of the biggest scandals in the history of Kyrgyz politics.

Mekenim Kyrgyzstan is a centre-right political party in Kyrgyzstan which was founded in 2015. In August 2020, Ata-Zhurt announced it would be running on a joint list with the party for the upcoming elections. The party is viewed as supportive of Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov.

The 2020 Kyrgyz Revolution, also known as the Third Kyrgyz Revolution or October Events, began on 5 October 2020, in response to the previous day's parliamentary election that was perceived by protestors as unfair, with allegations of vote rigging. The results of the election were annulled on 6 October 2020. On 12 October 2020, President Jeenbekov announced a state of emergency in the capital city of Bishkek, which was approved by Parliament the following day. Jeenbekov resigned on 15 October 2020.

Kasymaly Jantöshev was a Kyrgyz writer and playwright. Jantöshev is regarded as one of the most important Kyrgyz writers, and is considered to be one of the founders of Kyrgyz drama and theatre. Many of his works portray the transformation of Kyrgyz society during the 20th-century, and contain socialist themes. One of Jantöshev's novels, Kanybek, has become part of Kyrgyzstan's cultural heritage, and remains very popular within the country.
