Representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (i.e., LGBTQ) characters and themes in South Korean film and television remains a relatively small part of the country's overall media landscape. Discussions about such portrayals have grown both in academia and public LGBTQ movements. The South Korean LGBTQ rights movement, which gained momentum in the 1990s, contributed to increased visibility of queer characters and relationships in film and television. [1] While South Korea has historically been less accepting of LGBTQ identities, [2] attitudes are gradually changing. A study conducted at Chonnam National University found a growing acceptance of homosexuality in South Korea. [3]
The advent of social media, has facilitated the cultural consumption and creation of LGBTQ narratives, leading to increased representation in cinema and television. [4] [5] Activism and queer cinema have often intersected, as seen in initiatives like the Korean Queer Film Festival, which began in 1998. The festival underscores the close ties between activism and representation in South Korean media. [1]
Efforts by organizations such as the Rainbow Foundation and Chingusai have helped shape public attitudes and foster greater representation of LGBTQ themes in South Korean media. [3] Scholars Pil Ho Kim and C.Colin Singer categorize the progression of LGBTQ portrayals into three distinct periods: the Invisible Age (1945-1997), the Camouflage Age (1998-2004), and the Blockbuster Age (2005-early 2010s). During this period, films addressing LGBTQ themes were largely invisible to the broader public. [5] Although some films incorporated queer elements, they often remained overshadowed by other themes, such as violence or eroticism. Examples include:

This period also saw significant milestones, such as the public coming out of actor Hong Suk-chon in September 2000 and the appearance of trans woman Harisu in a widely publicized commercial in March 2001. [6]

One of the most notable shifts during this era was the use of LGBTQ themes in more mainstream Korean dramas. LGBTQ themes began surfacing within dramas such as The First Shop of Coffee Prince (2007), Antique (2008) and Personal Taste (2008), but really surfaced fully in Life is Beautiful (2010). [5]

"New queer cinema" is a term first coined by the academic B. Ruby Rich in Sight & Sound magazine in 1992 to define and describe a movement in queer-themed independent filmmaking in the early 1990s.
Memento Mori is a 1999 South Korean horror film, and the second installment of the Whispering Corridors film series. It is a sequel to 1998's Whispering Corridors, and is also set in an all-girls high school, but the films are otherwise unrelated. Memento Mori was one of the first Korean commercial films to depict lesbian characters. However, prevailing Korean attitudes constrained its potential to be widely viewed, even more so as the controversial themes targeted the teen demographic.

LGBTQ themes in horror fiction refers to sexuality in horror fiction that can often focus on LGBTQ+ characters and themes within various forms of media. It may deal with characters who are coded as or who are openly LGBTQ+, or it may deal with themes or plots that are specific to gender and sexual minorities.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people in South Korea face prejudice, discrimination, and other barriers to social inclusion not experienced by their non-LGBTQ counterparts. Same-sex intercourse is legal for civilians in South Korea, but in the military, same-sex intercourse among soldiers is a crime, and all able-bodied men must complete about one year and half of military service under the conscript system. South Korean national law does not recognize same-sex marriage or civil unions, nor does it protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Same-sex couples cannot jointly adopt, and a 2021 Human Rights Watch investigation found that LGBTQ students face "bullying and harassment, a lack of confidential mental health support, exclusion from school curricula, and gender identity discrimination" in South Korean schools.
Historically, the portrayal of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people in media has been largely negative if not altogether absent, reflecting a general cultural intolerance of LGBTQ individuals; however, from the 1990s to present day, there has been an increase in the positive depictions of LGBTQ people, issues, and concerns within mainstream media in North America. The LGBTQ communities have taken an increasingly proactive stand in defining their own culture, with a primary goal of achieving an affirmative visibility in mainstream media. The positive portrayal or increased presence of the LGBTQ communities in media has served to increase acceptance and support for LGBT communities, establish LGBTQ communities as a norm, and provide information on the topic.
LGBTQ+ media or gay media refers to media whose primary target audience is members of the LGBTQ community. Secondary targets are LGBTQ+ allies, and in some instances those who oppose gay rights may be targeted as a form of activism. Gay or queer media can also be defined as web sites, films, magazines and other cultural products that were created by queer individuals, or groups that are typically out, meaning that they are public or open about their identity. LGBTQ creators do not always include LGBTQ themes or issues in the media that they produce, but there are often at least subtle references to queerness in these media.

Daegu Queer Culture Festival (DQCF) or Daegu Queer Festival is an annual modern Korean festival with the theme of LGBT rights. It includes a pride parade and film festival. The festival lasts for a week or two, and usually takes place in late June. The event has been held every year since 2009 and has faced opposition from religious groups. Opposition by religious groups has prohibited the Daegu Queer Culture Festival from being held on an outdoor stage on a popular street that is typically utilized for other festivities in Daegu. It is estimated that about 28 religious and right-wing groups have formed a "gay issue countermeasure committee" in Daegu to block the commencement of events that serve the LGBT community. These groups believe that article 11 of South Korea's constitution, which states that "discrimination in political, economic, social or cultural life on account of sex, religion or social status" does not apply to same-sex marriages. The organizer of the Korea Queer Culture Festival states that South Korea condones public homosexuality due to its conservative background. The older generations believe that homosexuality is a foreign phenomenon, which contributes to rejection and isolation of the homosexual and bisexual community.
