Laila Woozeer is a British author, performer, musician, and activist. Woozeer's 2022 book, Not Quite White (published by Simon & Schuster) is a memoir described as "primarily focused on mixed-race identity and also looking at representation, structural racism, intergenerational trauma and interracial family relations." [1] Woozeer has also written for Cosmopolitan, [2] The Guardian, Eastern Eye, [3] Metro, [4] [5] My London [6] Shout Out UK [7] and Marie Claire [8] on race and identity. Woozeer is also a multi-instrumentalist who has worked in both theatre and musical theatre composing both original scores and soundtracks.

Writing

Not Quite White

Woozeer's debut book, Not Quite White, was released on 23 June 2022, and published by Simon & Schuster. The book is a memoir that focusses on mixed race identity as well as representation, intergenerational trauma, structural racism, and interracial family relations. [9] Excerpts from the book were published in Mashable [10] and Wales Art Review. [11] The book was featured in a list of best non-fiction books in Cosmopolitan and Stylist . [12] [13] The book began as a blog post on their blog TAPE PARADE. [1]

Other writing

Woozeer has written for and been interviewed in The Guardian, [14] Cosmopolitan , [2] Eastern Eye , [3] Metro , [4] [5] My London , [6] Shout Out UK [7] and Marie Claire [8] on race and identity. In 2015, BuzzFeed republished a post written by Woozeer about using the online dating app Tinder as a non-white person. [15] Woozeer previously wrote a blog called TAPE PARADE. [16]

Woozeer is a multi-instrumentalist who has worked in both theatre and musical theatre composing both original scores and soundtracks. Woozeer primarily uses piano and voice, as well as playing guitar, ukulele, bassoon and clarinet. [1] [17] Woozeer has worked on several projects including:

After being subjected to 'upskirting', Woozeer was interviewed on BBC and LBC radio as well as by Refinery29 about the experience and the campaign to make it illegal under The Voyeurism (Offences) Act. [23] [24] [25] [26]

Woozeer is a graduate of Goldsmiths, University of London and holds a Masters in Advanced Music Performance. [1]

Part-memoir, part-socio-political discussion, the book focuses on the construct of racial identity in the homes exploring Lawton's experience of being mixed-black in a white home with two white parents without knowing why, and discovering she was the product of a brief liaison between her mother and her birth father. Catherine Joy White is an English actress, producer, author and gender advisor for the United Nations (UN). White began her career with the UN as an intern whilst studying at university, later becoming a contracted advisor for them. She then made her debut as an actress in 2019, and set up her own production company, Kusini Productions, which saw her receive an accolade at the British Urban Film Festival for one of her short films. She has also authored a non-fiction novel, This Thread of Gold, which was published in 2023.
