Lake Heather (Wai Te Huahua) [1] is a dune lake in the Far North District of New Zealand. It is located west of the town of Awanui, and between the larger Lake Ngatu and Lake Rotoroa.

Lake Heather has no inflow or outflow streams. The lake catchment is primarily pasture, with scrub along the eastern border. The margins are fenced and have recently had native planting. [2]

Water quality and ecology

The lake is monitored by Northland Regional Council, and the environmental information can be viewed on the LAWA website. [2] The Bushland Trust, working with the Department of Conservation and Northland Regional Council, is undertaking restoration at Lake Rotoroa, as well as other nearby dune lakes, such as Lake Rotoroa, Lake Rotokawau, Lake Ngatu, Lake Gem, and Lake Ngakapua.

The Awanui River is a river in the far north of New Zealand, close to the point at which the Aupouri Peninsula joins the rest of the Northland Peninsula. The Awanui flows first west and then north, for a total of 30 kilometres (19 mi), before flowing into Rangaunu Harbour. The town of Kaitaia is along its banks.

Kaimaumau wetland Wetland in Northland, New Zealand

The Kaimaumau wetland is a wetland by the Rangaunu Harbour, in Northland, New Zealand. At approximately 1,860 hectares, it is one of the largest remaining wetlands in Northland. It comprises the Otiaita and Waihauhau swamps, Motutangi Swamp Scientific Reserve, and Lake Waikaramu. The wetland is currently threatened by peat mining and by water loss from avocado growing.

Lake Rotopokaka Lake in the North Island of New Zealand

Lake Rotopokaka is a dune lake in the Far North District of New Zealand. It is adjacent to Tokerau Beach on the east coast of the Karikari Peninsula. The lake is also known as 'Coca Cola lake' as the peat and tannins in the water give the lake a distinct 'cola' colour.

Lake Rotokawau is a dune lake on the Karikari Peninsula in the Far North District of New Zealand. It is northeast of Rangiputa village and near Puwheke Beach. It is sometimes referred to as 'Lake Rotokawau West' and is the larger of two adjacent lakes.
