Lakshmi Mills Company is a major textile yarn and cloth manufacturer in Coimbatore, India. The company was established by G.Kuppuswamy Naidu in 1910.

It has two composite textile units in Coimbatore: Avinashi Road and Palladam and one in Kovilpatti. The promoters of the mill were also instrumental in starting various textile machinery companies notably LMW and medical and educational institutions. The unit in Coimbatore in Papanaickenpalayam is also a well known famous landmark of the city.

History

The founder G. Kuppuswami Naidu born in Papanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore was into cotton ginning and trading. Lakshmi Mills was incorporated in 1910 as a composite textile mill to produce cotton yarn and fabric cloth under ‘Lakshmi Mills’ label in Avinashi Road. In mid-1940s second unit was started at Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu and in mid-1960s Palladam unit commenced operations. In 1977, Coimbatore Cotton Mills, established in the 1930s as a composite textile unit Singanallur was merged into Lakshmi Mills. This unit was under Lakshmi Mills management since the 1950s. By 1960s staple fibre production was added to the product line. The company had showrooms in prominent cities and town in South India to sell suiting, shirts, sarees and other textile products

Group expansion

Lakshmi Mills was also instrumental in the group's expansion into textile machinery companies like LMW, Lakshmi Automatic Looms, Lakshmi Card Clothing, Lakshmi Ring Travellers. The management along with R.Venkataswamy family set up the viscose staple yarn production unit South India Viscose with technology license from SNIA Viscosa of Milan, Italy .

Lakshmi Mills manufactures 100% combed cotton yarns in NE 50s to NE 120s, polyester cotton blended yarns in NE 40s to NE 100s. In addition, the Company manufactures 100% lenzing micro modal/modal/tencel yarns, micro modal/modal cotton blended yarns, 100% micro tencel yarn, tencel/cotton blended yarn.

Notable directors

Notable directors and founding family members include S.Karivardhan, a then Indian motorsport personality and founder's managing director, G. K. Devarajulu, then Managing Director and founder of LMW, [1] G. K. Sundaram, a freedom fighter. [2] [3]

The company was also instrumental in promoting various sports, notably cricket, hockey, motorsports, and horse racing. [4] [5]

Sundaram Karivaradhan Naidu or Kari was an Indian formula racing driver, designer and a business executive. He was one of the pioneers of Indian motorsports. He designed the Formula Maruti open wheeled race car and supported Indian racers, notably Narain Karthikeyan, Karun Chandhok, and Armaan Ebrahim, in their entry into motorsports. He was later killed in an air crash, aged 41.

Lakshmi Machine Works Limited is India's largest textile machinery and CNC Machine Tool manufacturers, based in Coimbatore founded by Dr. G.K. Devarajulu. It started its operation in 1962 in Periyanaickanpalayam in Coimbatore city with technical collaboration with Swiss-based textile machinery manufacturer Rieter for textile machines and German based Steel & Ammunition major Krupp. In mid 1980's the company bought over its Coimbatore based longtime rival and an older Textile & Engineering giant Textool. The company is promoted and owned by the Lakshmi Mills family.

Courtaulds was a United Kingdom-based manufacturer of fabric, clothing, artificial fibres, and chemicals. It was established in 1794 and became the world's leading man-made fibre production company before being broken up in 1990 into Courtaulds plc and Courtaulds Textiles Ltd.

Avinashi is a Special Grade Town Panchayat in Tiruppur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Avinashi is one among the nine taluks of the district. It is one of the popular pilgrim destinations in Western Tamil Nadu region. It is located on National Highway NH544, which bypasses the town. The history of the town is centered around the Avinasilingeswarar temple. The town was previously a part of the Coimbatore district until Tirupur was carved out as a separate district from the erstwhile districts of Coimbatore and Erode. G. Kuppuswamy Naidu (1884-1942) was an entrepreneur and businessman from Coimbatore, India. In 1910, he established Lakshmi Mills, a major textile yarn and cloth manufacturer in Coimbatore. Lakshmi Mills owns multiple textile units, machine tools company and other educational institutions and hospitals in Coimbatore. Sundaram Karivardhan, Indian auto racer was the grandson of Kuppuswami.

Avinashi Road, is an arterial road in Coimbatore, India. Running from east to west, the road starts at Uppilipalayam flyover and ends at Neelambur by-pass junction where it joins NH 544, Beyond Neelambur Junction, the road branches into two, with one traversing southwards to Madukarai to form the Coimbatore bypass while the other continues westwards to Avinashi and beyond to form the National Highway 544. This road connects Coimbatore to its airport and the east and north-east suburbs. The road was an indicator of development as the city of Coimbatore grew up mostly along its eastern and western sides.

It is considered to be one of the best equipped textile research organisations in the world and its members apart from India include Indonesia, Iran, Nigeria, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Kamanaickenpalayam is a town panchayat in the Tiruppur District in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. There are a total of 15 wards in the Panchayat.
