Lal Dena (born 11 January 1939) is a historian of modern South Asia with special interest in Manipur and Mizoram. He is a retired professor of Manipur University and the former Vice Chancellor of Sangai International University,Churachandpur. [1] [2] He is from the Hmar tribe.
Prof. Lal Dena passed Class-X from Pherzawl High School in 1959,and did PUC from DM College in 1963. He did BA and MA (History) from Gauhati University completing them in 1970. He received his Ph.D. degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU),New Delhi in 1982.
Prof. Lal Dena taught history at the Department of History,Manipur University,Imphal,and served as its head of department until his retirement. [3] He then joined Sangai International University as the Vice Chancellor.
Manipur is a state in northeast India,with the city of Imphal as its capital. It is bounded by the Indian states of Nagaland to the north,Mizoram to the south and Assam to the west. It also borders two regions of Myanmar,Sagaing Region to the east and Chin State to the south. The state covers an area of 22,327 km2 (8,621 sq mi). The official and most widely spoken language is the Meitei language. Native to the Meitei people,it is also used as a lingua franca by smaller communities,who speak a variety of other Tibeto-Burman languages. Manipur has been at the crossroads of Asian economic and cultural exchange for more than 2,500 years. This exchange connects the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia to Southeast Asia,East Asia,Siberia,regions in the Arctic,Micronesia and Polynesia enabling migration of people,cultures and religions.
Hmar is a Kuki ethnic group living in Northeast Indian state of Manipur,Mizoram,Assam and western Myanmar (Burma) and eastern Bangladesh. They use Meitei language as their second language (L2) in Manipur. They speak Mizo language as their L1 in Mizoram.
The Bnei Menashe is a community of Indian Jews from various Tibeto-Burmese ethnic groups from the border of India and Burma who claim descent from one of the Lost Tribes of Israel;some of them have adopted Judaism. The community has around 10,000 members.

The history of Mizoram encompasses the history of Mizoram which lies in the southernmost part of northeast India. It is a conglomerate history of several ethnic groups of Chin people who migrated from Chin State of Burma. But information of their patterns of westward migration are based on oral history and archaeological inferences,hence nothing definite can be said. The recorded history started relatively recently around the mid-19th century when the adjoining regions were occupied by the British monarchy. Following religious,political and cultural revolutions in the mid-20th century majority of the people agglomerated into a super tribe,Mizo. Collectively,they are termed the Zo people.
Rochunga Pudaite was an Indian minister of Hmar descent. He translated the Bible into the Hmar language and founded Bibles for the World. He was a renowned speaker and an evangelist. His organisation,Bibles for the World,has allowed distribution of the Christian Bible to millions of people around the world,by mailing Bibles in different languages to them.
Zo is a Northern Kuki-Chin-Mizo language originating in western Burma and spoken also in Mizoram and Manipur in northeastern India.
Imphal Free Press is an English-language daily published in Manipur,India. Alongside the Sangai Express,it is one of the two most widely read newspapers of Manipur. It is considered as one of the "good quality" newspapers,among approximately 40 papers in the state of Manipur.
Edwin Rowlands was a Welsh Christian missionary in northeast India and Burma. He was a professional teacher,singer,composer,poet,translator and literary figure among the Mizo people. He was regarded as the most beloved of all British missionaries in Mizoram. He was more popularly known as Zosapthara. He made the major hymns in Mizo and Khumi which are still in use. He modified the original Mizo alphabet and his system became the standard in Mizo language. He created written language for Khumi people in Burma,and for Bhil people in Maharashtra. His literary works are the foundation of Mizo literature. He was the first administrator of education in Mizoram as Honorary Inspector of Schools. Despite objection from various corners he married Thangkungi,a Mizo girl.
Moirangthem Kirti Singh is an Indian writer,scholar and educationist from Manipur. Born on 1 February 1943 at Kongba Uchekon near Imphal to M. Borajao Singh,Singh completed his education from Johnstone Higher Secondary School,Imphal and D. M. College,which were under Guwahati University during those days,securing a BA (Honours) and MA in philosophy. Later,he obtained a bachelor's degree in Law (LLB) from LMS Law College,Imphal in 1965,followed by a doctoral degree (PhD) in 1972,making him one of the first Meitei to be awarded a PhD. He is also the first Meitei to receive a DLitt. He served various colleges in Manipur as a member of faculty and has also been involved in social activism.
The Anāl is a Naga tribe native to Manipur state in North-East India and part of Myanmar. They are listed as a Scheduled Tribe,in accordance with The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Orders (Amendment) Act,1976 Indian Constitution. The Anāl tribe is one of the 'sixty six Naga tribes' of the Naga ancestral homeland. The members of this tribe are found both in India and Myanmar. In India,they are situated in the States of Manipur and Nagaland but mostly concentrated in the former. In the State of Manipur,the Anāl Naga population concentrated in Chandel and a few Anāl villages are located in its neighbouring districts,Churachandpur district has about three villages and Thoubal district has one or two.

Pherzawl district is located in the southern part of the state of Manipur. It is bounded on the east by Churachandpur District;on the north by Tamenglong District,Noney District and Jiribam district;on the west by the Cachar District of Assam and on the South by Sinlung Hills,Mizoram. Pherzawl District is located between 93°11' 16.0440' East Longitude and 24°15' 43.0524' North Latitude and is in the southern part of Manipur state. Pherzawl District has approximately 200 villages.
Thangjing Hill,is a mountain peak in the Indian state of Manipur. It is in the Churachandpur district,to the west of Moirang. The north-south-running mountain range on which it sits is also called Thangjing range or Thangjing Hills. The range forms part of the western border of the Imphal Valley.
Taoroinai is a snake-like dragon in Meitei mythology and Sanamahism,the indigenous religion of Manipur. It lived in the land of the Moon. According to the Shakok Lamlen,the Kangla was constructed over the navel of Taoroinai.
