PeerJ is an open access peer-reviewed scientific mega journal covering research in the biological and medical sciences. It officially launched in June 2012, started accepting submissions on December 3, 2012, and published its first articles on February 12, 2013.
Predatory publishing, also write-only publishing or deceptive publishing, is an exploitative academic publishing business model that involves charging publication fees to authors while only superficially checking articles for quality and legitimacy, and without providing editorial and publishing services that legitimate academic journals provide, whether open access or not. The rejection rate of predatory journals is low, but seldom zero. The phenomenon of "open access predatory publishers" was first noticed by Jeffrey Beall, when he described "publishers that are ready to publish any article for payment". However, criticisms about the label "predatory" have been raised. A lengthy review of the controversy started by Beall appears in The Journal of Academic Librarianship.
"Who's Afraid of Peer Review?" is an article written by Science correspondent John Bohannon that describes his investigation of peer review among fee-charging open-access journals. Between January and August 2013, Bohannon submitted fake scientific papers to 304 journals owned by fee-charging open access publishers. The papers, writes Bohannon, "were designed with such grave and obvious scientific flaws that they should have been rejected immediately by editors and peer reviewers", but 60% of the journals accepted them. The article and associated data were published in the 4 October 2013 issue of Science as open access.
BMJ Open is a peer-reviewed open access medical journal that is dedicated to publishing medical research from all disciplines and therapeutic areas. It is published by BMJ and considers all research study types, from protocols through phase I trials to meta-analyses, including small, specialist studies, and negative studies.
Royal Society Open Science is a peer-reviewed, open access scientific journal published by the Royal Society since September 2014. Its launch was announced in February 2014. It covers all scientific fields and publishes all articles which are scientifically sound, leaving any judgement of impact to the reader. As of 2022, the editor-in-chief, Wendy Hall, is supported by a team of subject editors and associate editors. Commissioning and peer review for the chemistry section of the journal is managed by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The journal offers Registered Reports across all subject disciplines, and Replications as a formal article type in the Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience Section, though the journal welcomes replications in other disciplines, too. In 2021, the journal launched a new 'Science, Society and Policy' section of the journal.
Nordica, part of the Nordic Aviation Group AS, is an Estonian charter airline which was the flag carrier of Estonia from 2016 to 2023, a capacity purchase arrangement provider, headquartered in Tallinn, with its office premises in the vicinity of Tallinn Airport. The company used to operate scheduled flights to Sweden, but those flights ceased in October 2023, and as of October 2023, the airline focuses on operations under wet-lease contracts on behalf of other European airlines.
