Laura Lynn Fernández Piña (born 11 June 1971) is a Mexican marketing professional and politician from the Party of the Democratic Revolution.

Early life

She was born in the city of Torreón, Coahuila and grew up in Guadalajara, Jalisco. She is the daughter of Luis Fernández Meza and Marcia Piña Puchi. She earned her degree in marketing from the Universidad del Valle de Atemajac in Guadalajara, Mexico. [1]

Political career

In 1999, Fernández Piña dabbled in politics behind the Party of the Democratic Revolution and also has occupied several diverse positions in public administration. She headed the Department of Tourism and Public Relations in the city council of Benito Juárez (Cancún) during the 1999-2002 administration. Then, she has the delegate to the Quintana Roo Institute for Women. From 2005 to 2008 she was the technical secretary of the Cabinet of Benito Juárez's city council.

Local Representative of Quintana Roo (2008-2011)

Fernández Piña was elected Representative of District X of Quintana Roo with the Institutional Revolutionary Party for the period 2008-2011 and presided over the Finance, Budget, and Public Accounts Committee for the XII Legislature of the State Congress. She was also a candidate for Representative of Federal District 03. [2]

Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo (2013-2016)

In 2013 she held the role of Secretary of Tourism of the State Government of Quintana Roo (SEDETUR) until 2016 in PRI Governor Roberto Borge Angulo's administration. In 2014, she participated in the organization of the 39th Edition of the Tianguis Turístico de México in Cancún. In April of 2016, she resigned from the position and subsequently her affiliation with the PRI in order to join the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico and to be a candidate for municipal president of Puerto Morelos.

Municipal President of Puerto Morelos (2016-2021)

In the local elections of 2016, Fernández Piña was elected the first female municipal president of Puerto Morelos, having the honor of heading the first city council of the new municipality from 2016 to 2018. During her first administration she presided over the Conferencia Nacional de Municipios de México (CONAMM) (National Conference of Municipalities of Mexico), which assembles more than 2,400 city councils of different party affiliations. [3] Subsequently, she became the first woman to be reelected as municipal president in Quintana Roo after her win in the 2018 elections, resulting in a second term that she held until March 2021. Federal Representative (2021-2024)

In 2021, she was elected the Ecologist Green Party's candidate to run for Federal Representative on behalf of the coalition "Juntos Hacemos Historia" (Together We Make History) for district 4 of Quintana Roo. She was elected on June 5 with 43.60% of the votes. In March 2022, she requested an indefinite leave of absence as federal deputy to run for Governor of Quintana Roo. In the absence of an alternate, her seat in the Chamber of Deputies became vacant until her subsequent reincorporation in June.

Candidate for Governor of Quintana Roo (2022)

In January of 2022 she resigned from the Ecologist Green Part of Mexico to be a candidate for governor of Quintana Roo for the Party of the Democratic Revolution. On January 21, 2022, she registered on behalf of the "Va por Quintana Roo" coalition. In the June 5th elections, Fernandez Piña came in second place, with 16.08% of the votes, 41 points behind the elected governor Mara Lezama Espinosa of the National Regeneration Movement, who received 57.06% of the votes cast.

The Ecological Green Party of Mexico is a green-conservative political party in Mexico. In the 2012 legislative elections, the party took 34 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and nine seats in the Senate. During the 2012 Presidential election, PVEM supported Enrique Peña Nieto (EPN), the candidate from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), who was elected. In 2018, PVEM supported Todos por México coalition, along with PRI and PANAL. José Antonio Meade, the coalition's candidate, came in third in a four-way race, with 16.43% of the vote. PVEM later withdrew from Todos por Mexico and gradually came close to the government, formally entering the Juntos Haremos Historia coalition in 2019. In December 2020 it founded the Juntos Hacemos Historia coalition, together with the National Regeneration Movement and the Labor Party and contested the 2021 Mexican legislative elections with them.

He served a six-year prison sentence, and was extradited to the United States on 8 May 2010.

The First Federal Electoral District of Quintana Roo(I Distrito Electoral Federal de Quintana Roo) is one of the 300 Electoral Districts into which Mexico is divided for the purpose of elections to the federal Chamber of Deputies and one of three such districts in the state of Quintana Roo.

Same-sex marriage is performed and recognized in all municipalities of the state of Quintana Roo. The first two same-sex marriages occurred in Kantunilkin on 28 November 2011 after it was discovered that the state's Civil Code does not specify sex or gender requirements for marriage. However, future same-sex marriages were suspended in January 2012 upon review by the state's Secretary General of Government. The two same-sex marriages in the state were annulled by the Governor of Quintana Roo, Roberto Borge Angulo, in April 2012, but these annulments were reversed by the Secretary General of Government on 3 May. The Secretary's decision allows for future same-sex marriages to be performed in Quintana Roo.

Puerto Morelos is one of the eleven municipalities of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, on the Yucatán Peninsula. It was formed in 2016 from the localities of Puerto Morelos, Leona Vicario and Central Vallarta previously belonging to the municipality of Benito Juárez. In the 2010 census, these three localities recorded a total of 15,725 inhabitants.

The 2022 Quintana Roo gubernatorial election was held on 5 June 2022 to elect a new governor of Quintana Roo and 25 deputies to the state congress. Despite Carlos Joaquín González being a popular incumbent governor from the Party of the Democratic Revolution and the National Action Party the race was considered as a long shot due to the state's high approval of López Obrador, Morena's strong showing in the midterms and Mara Lezama's own popularity. On November 3rd 2021 it was revealed Marko Cortés, the leader of the National Action Party expected to loose the state along with other four in play. The election resulted in a landslide for Mexico’s ruling Morena party during President López Obrador's first term in office, winning the gubernatorial election, aditionally, they won all 15 local districs with the opposition only getting proportional representation seats.
