Le Butcherettes is a Mexican garage punk band formed in 2007 in Guadalajara by Teri Gender Bender. [2] [3]

History

Le Butcherettes was created by vocalist/guitarist Teri Gender Bender, who later recruited drummer Auryn Jolene to form a duo. Their live act, featuring 1950s fashions and props such as brooms, feather dusters, and bloody aprons to refer to women being slaves, quickly achieved acclaim in the Mexican underground scene. [4] Teri Gender Bender would also use artificial blood, flour, eggs, meat, and a real pig head on stage. [5]

The band won "Best New Artist" and "Best Punk Record" in the Indie-O Awards 2009. [6] A disagreement on direction led Auryn Jolene to abruptly leave and claim the end of the band, leading to media confusion. Teri Gender Bender later denied this. Gender Bender moved the band to Los Angeles and recruited drummer Normandi Heuxdalfo. Notable 2009 appearances include Hellow Fest in Monterrey and opening for The Dead Weather in their Mexico City and Guadalajara shows. In January 2010, Le Butcherettes opened for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at shows in Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City. [7]

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta produced (as well as contributed bass guitar to) Le Butcherettes' LP, Sin Sin Sin . The first single, "Henry Don't Got Love", was released in 2010 as a free download from Le Butcherettes' Bandcamp page. The album was released in May 2011 on Rodriguez-Lopez's label.

Le Butcherettes toured the U.S. with Deftones and The Dillinger Escape Plan with the new line-up of Teri, drummer Gabe Serbian (of The Locust) and bassist Jonathan Hischke; Le Butcherettes later played support for Queens of the Stone Age. [8]

They toured Europe with The Mars Volta and North America with Rodriguez-Lopez's new project Antemasque in 2014 and 2015. [9] The record Cry Is for the Flies was released in America by Ipecac Recordings, and gained a further following with extensive touring with the Melvins. [10]

In June 2015 the band announced that their album A Raw Youth would be released September 18, 2015 and produced by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez; it has guest appearances from John Frusciante and Iggy Pop. [11] [12]

Between August and September 2017, the band posted several photos on social media featuring the recording sessions for a new album, somewhere in Northern California. This was later confirmed to have taken place in Stinson Beach. [13] The new album was expected to be released in October 2018, [14] but was eventually released on February 1, 2019, titled bi/MENTAL . [15]

In 2018 the band appeared as a part of the Flaming Lips North America tour. Le Butcherettes also guested on the Adult Swim television series FishCenter Live . [16] In 2019 the band played shows with L7 On a North American tour, as well as a show with Bikini Kill. In 2019, Le Butcherettes, along with Devil Makes Three, toured on Social Distortion's and Flogging Molly's fall tour. .

Band members

During the Pandemic, Teri Gender Bender started sorting hard drives containing her early recordings. She then explained to the band her need to re-record many of these tracks as a solo artist, but assured them that Le Butcherettes was far from done. [17]

Parks was a member of progressive rock band the Mars Volta and a member of the alternative rock act Bosnian Rainbows. Parks is a composer and performer on the André 3000 “New Blue Sun.”

The Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group is an American experimental rock band, and the main side project of Omar Rodríguez-López. Featuring an ever-changing lineup of musicians alongside Rodriguez-Lopez, the group is most often a live entity to perform the various outlets of his solo music aside from the Mars Volta. After the dissolution of the Mars Volta in 2012, Omar completed a few more solo records until 2013 before deciding to pursue only collaborative efforts with groups At the Drive-In, Bosnian Rainbows, Antemasque, and Crystal Fairy.

According to Rodriguez-Lopez, the album was "recorded in the summer of 2006, around the same time I did Old Money. It was a very, very fun record to make. I made that record in five or six days."

Antemasque was an American rock supergroup formed in 2014 by former members of At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta, Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala. Their first album featured Red Hot Chili Peppers's Flea on bass and Dave Elitch on drums. Both Flea and Elitch had previously played with The Mars Volta. Omar's brother Marfred Rodríguez-López eventually joined as a permanent bassist with Blink-182 member Travis Barker taking over drumming duties.

Crystal Fairy was an American rock supergroup from Los Angeles / El Paso, formed in 2016. The band consisted of Melvins' Buzz Osborne (guitar) and Dale Crover (drums), alongside Le Butcherettes' Teri Gender Bender (vocals) and Omar Rodríguez-López (bass) of At the Drive-In / The Mars Volta / Antemasque fame.

A Walk with Love & Death is a double album and the 22nd album by American rock band Melvins, released on July 7, 2017, through Ipecac Recordings. It includes two distinct albums: Love, a fourteen-song soundtrack to a short film by Jesse Nieminen, also known as A Walk with Love & Death, and Death, made up of nine standard songs. This is the first full-length Melvins album to feature bassist Steven McDonald, who only appeared on four of the songs on their previous album, Basses Loaded. Bi/Mental is the fourth studio album by Mexican-American band Le Butcherettes, and is the band's label debut for Rise Records. The album's lyrics address personal themes, such as mental illness, and is strongly inspired by the band's family and domestic circumstances, particularly that of frontwoman Teri Gender Bender. The album was released upwards of three years and four months after its predecessor A Raw Youth, marking the band's longest gap between the release of full-length albums.
