The Leader of the Socialist Party is the most senior politician within the Socialist Party (Dutch : Socialistische Partij, SP) in the Netherlands. The post is currently held by Jimmy Dijk, who succeeded Lilian Marijnissen on 13 December 2023. [1]
The Leaders outwardly act as the 'figurehead' and the main representative of the party. Within the party, they must ensure political consensus. Except during the tenure of Daan Monjé, the Leader is always the Lijsttrekker (lead candidate) of the party list at election time. Outside election time the Leader can serve as the Opposition leader. Since the tenure of Jan Marijnissen, the Leader is always the Parliamentary leader of the Socialist Party in the House of Representatives.

The Socialist Party is a democratic socialist and social democratic political party in the Netherlands. Founded in 1971 as the Communist Party of the Netherlands/Marxist–Leninist, the party has since moderated itself from Marxism–Leninism and Maoism towards democratic socialism and social democracy. The SP has also been described as left-wing populist, far-left and Eurosceptic, and is an advocate of Dutch republicanism.
