The Leeward Islands Championships in Athletics is an athletics event organized by the Leeward Islands Athletics Association (LIAA) open for (but not restricted to) athletes from its member associations.
The Leeward Islands Athletics Association (LIAA) was founded in 2002, [1] replacing the Leeward Islands Athletics Steering Committee that had previously organized the Leeward Island Championships.
It comprises the following 8 member associations
Nevis is an independent member, the athletes compete in an own team separately from Saint Kitts.
The LIAA hold two different championships: so-called Leeward Islands Junior Championships (effectively junior (U20) and youth (U17) championships), and Leeward Islands Youth Championships (effectively age group championships U15, U13, and U11).

The Central American and Caribbean Age Group Championships in Athletics was hosted for the first time in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, on July 1–2, 2011. The BVI Athletics Association is organizing the event which is part of its 40th anniversary activities. It is the smallest CACAC family member to host a CACAC Championships event, which is held for the first time in the Leeward Islands.
The 10th CARIFTA Games was held in Nassau, Bahamas on April 20–21, 1981. An appraisal of the results has been given on the occasion of 40th anniversary of the games.

The 25th CARIFTA Games was held in Kingston, Jamaica, on April 6–8, 1996. An appraisal of the results has been given on the occasion of 40th anniversary of the games.
The 37th CARIFTA Games was held in the Bird Rock Athletic Stadium in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, on March 21–24, 2008. IAAF president Lamine Diack was visiting the games emphasizing the event's importance and high value. Detailed reports on the results were given.
The 2015 Pan American Junior Championships was the eighteenth edition of the biennial track and field competition for under-20 athletes from the Americas, organised by the Association of Panamerican Athletics. It was held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, at the Foote Field from 31 July to 2 August.
The Virgin Islands Track & Field Federation (VITFF) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in the United States Virgin Islands. Current president is Ronald Russell.
The British Virgin Islands Athletics Association (BVIAA) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in the British Virgin Islands. Current president is Steve Augustine. He was elected for the first time in 2016.
The Saint Kitts & Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (SKNAAA) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
The Sint Maarten Amateur Athletic Association is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Sint Maarten. Current president is Les Brown.
The Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (NAAA) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Nevis. The current president is Lester Blackett.

Alexander Ogilvie Shirley, MBE, was a British Virgin Islands cricketer, civil servant, and social activist who pioneered the development of cricket in the territory. He served as the Accountant General of the British Virgin Islands from 1967 until his retirement in 1987.
