Arab Junior Athletics Championships

The Arab Junior Athletics Championships, also known as the Arab U20 Athletics Championships, is a biennial international athletics competition between athletes under the age of 20 (juniors) from Arabic countries. [1] It is organised by the Arab Athletic Association.

Contents

If was first held in 1984 – seven years after the inauguration of the senior Arab Athletics Championships. [2] An Arab Youth Athletics Championships was launched twenty years after the junior competition. [3]

Abderrahmane Hammad Zaheer is the Algerian Minister of Youth and Sports and a former track and field athlete who competed in the high jump. He represented his country at the Summer Olympics in 2000, taking the bronze medal and made a second appearance at the 2004 Athens Olympics. His personal best of 2.34 m is the Algerian record for the event. He retired from the sport in 2010. In 2020, he became the President of the Algerian Olympic Committee. Hammad was appointed as minister on 16 March 2023.

Rashid Shafi Al-Dosari is a Qatari track and field athlete who competed in the discus throw. He has represented Qatar at the Summer Olympics on two occasions, making his debut in 2000 and reaching the final at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was also a finalist at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics. In 2003 he was banned from competing for two years due to his refusal to be tested for doping.

Yahya Hassan Ibrahim Habeeb is a Saudi Arabian track and field athlete who specialises in sprinting events. He was the gold medallist over 100 metres at the 2006 Asian Games and represented Saudi Arabia at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics. His best for the distance is 10.28 seconds.

Mohammad Mutlak Khalif Al-Azemi is a Kuwaiti middle distance runner who specialises in the 800 metres. His 800 m personal bests of 1:44.13 minutes outdoors and 1:48.93 minutes indoors are the Kuwaiti records for the event. He represented his nation at the Olympic Games in 2004, 2008 and 2012, and has also made four appearances at the World Championships in Athletics.

The Arab Cross Country Championships is an international competition in cross country running between Arabic countries. Organised by the Arab Athletics Federation, it was first contested in 1978 and held its twentieth edition in 2013. Originally hosted on an annual basis, then a biennial schedule from 1990 to 2002, the competition has not been held at regular intervals in recent years.

The Maghreb Athletics Championships was an international athletics competition between athletes from countries of the Maghreb. The event was hosted eleven times during its existence from the late 1960s to 1990.

The 2005 African Junior Athletics Championships was the seventh edition of the biennial, continental athletics tournament for African athletes aged 19 years or younger. It was held in the Tunisian cities of Tunis and Radès from 1–4 September. A total of 44 events were contested, 22 by men and 22 by women.

Saleh Abdelaziz Alhaddad is a Kuwaiti track and field athlete who specialises in the long jump. He holds the Kuwaiti records for the event with bests of 7.94 m indoors and 8.02 m outdoors. He also holds the national best for the 60 metres, with his time of 6.78 seconds. He represented Kuwait at the global level at the 2008 IAAF World Indoor Championships and the 2003 World Youth Championships in Athletics.

The 2004 Arab Youth Athletics Championships was the inaugural edition of the international athletics competition for under-18 athletes from Arab countries. Organised by the Arab Athletic Federation, it took place in Rabat, Morocco from 31 July to 2 August. A total of thirty-nine events were contested, of which 20 by male and 19 by female athletes, identically matching the programme of the 2003 World Youth Championships in Athletics. The girls' programme did not have a steeplechase event.

The 2013 Arab Youth Athletics Championships was the fourth edition of the international athletics competition for under-18 athletes from Arab countries. Organised by the Arab Athletic Federation, it took place in the Egyptian capital Cairo from 21–23 June. A total of forty events were contested, of which 20 by male and 20 by female athletes. The girls' steeplechase was contested for the first time, making the programme match that of the 2013 World Youth Championships in Athletics. The racewalking events were held on roads, rather than the usual track surface.

The 2008 Arab Junior Athletics Championships was the thirteenth edition of the international athletics competition for under-20 athletes from Arab countries. It took place between 20–23 June in Radès, Tunisia – the second time that the country hosted the tournament. A total of 44 athletics events were contested, 22 for men and 22 for women.

Nagwa Ibrahim Saleh Ali is an Egyptian former racewalker. She is the Egyptian record holder in the 20 kilometres walk with her time of 1:41:08 hours from 2002. She is a three-time African champion and represented Egypt at the IAAF World Race Walking Cup on four occasions.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2012 Arab Junior Athletics Championships</span> International athletics championship event

The 2012 Arab Junior Athletics Championships was the fifteenth edition of the international athletics competition for under-20 athletes from Arab countries. It took place between 16–19 May at Amman International Stadium in Amman, Jordan. It was the first time that Jordan hosted the event. A total of 42 athletics events were contested, 21 for men and 21 for women. The men's 10,000 metres and women's 5000 metres were dropped from the programme for this edition.

Abderrahmane Tamada is a Tunisian former track and field athlete who competed in the pole vault. His personal best of 5.15 m was achieved in 2006. He was the gold medallist at the 2007 All-Africa Games and runner-up at the 2006 African Championships in Athletics. He won medals at the Arab Junior Athletics Championships, Arab Athletics Championships and the Pan Arab Games.

Abderrahmane Hammadi is an Algerian former track and field athlete who specialised in the 400 metres hurdles. He competed internationally for Algeria between 2003 and 2011.
