The country's participation marked its second appearance in the Summer Olympics since its debut at the 1984 Summer games in Los Angeles, United States. The delegation from Djibouti included six athletes, five in athletics and one in sailing. The five athletes for athletics were Hoche Yaya Aden, Ismael Hassan, Talal Omar Abdillahi, Hussein Ahmed Salah, and Omar Moussa while Robleh Ali Adou represented the nation in sailing. Ahmed Salah won the nation's first Olympic medal, which is a bronze at the Men's Marathon event.
Water polo has been part of the Summer Olympics program since the second games, in 1900. A women's water polo tournament was introduced for the 2000 Summer Olympics. Hungary has been the most successful country in men's tournament, while the United States is the only team to win multiple times at the women's tournament since its introduction. Italy was the first to win both the men's and women's water polo tournaments.
Lizzie Foster was a British archer. She competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. Foster competed at the 1908 Games in the only archery event open to women, the double National round. She took 7th place in the event with 553 points.
Sidney Ernest Swann was a Manx-English clergyman and a rower who competed for Great Britain in the 1912 Summer Olympics and in the 1920 Summer Olympics.

Leslie Thomas Farrer was an English footballer who represented Great Britain at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Farrer played as an amateur for Bishop Auckland and Walthamstow Avenue. Farrer died in November 2017 at the age of 94.
Colin Bradford is a Jamaican former track and field athlete who specialised in sprinting events. He represented Jamaica at the Olympic Games in 1976 and 1980.
Neville Myton was a Jamaican middle distance runner who competed in the 1964 Summer Olympics and in the 1968 Summer Olympics.
