Liam Robinson (born 19 July 1983)[ citation needed ] is a British Labour and Co-operative Party politician who has served as the leader of Liverpool City Council since the reestablishment of the position in May 2023. Additionally,he holds the portfolio for innovation in the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and is also the chair of Merseytravel. [2]
Robinson was elected as a councillor for Kensington and Fairfield in 2008,succeeding Liberal Democrat councillor Frank Doran. [3] He has since held various roles in the city,chairing Merseytravel [4] and serving on the board of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership. [5]
Robinson worked for Network Rail at Liverpool Lime Street railway station for sixteen years prior to becoming leader of Liverpool City Council. [6]
Robinson was elected as the Leader of Liverpool City Council's Labour group in November 2022, [4] being formally elected as leader of the council in May 2023 following the Labour group gaining a majority of seats in the May 2023 local elections. In 2012 Liverpool's went for a mayoral system of a directly elected mayor. [7] The mayor was abolished in 2023 with Robinson succeeding the last mayor Joanne Anderson.
Upon taking office,Robinson pledged to continue Anderson's work in addressing the 2021 government report into the council,which criticised its "severe breakdowns of governance". [8] Additionally,he stated that he intended to build more homes in Liverpool and advocate for more devolution of power to Liverpool City Region. [9]
As leader of the Liverpool City Council,a constituent council of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority,Robinson also serves on the Mayor's Cabinet and since 2024 has been the Cabinet Member for Innovation.
Robinson is married with two children. He supports Manchester United F.C.. [1]

Although Anderson formally remained as Mayor until the end of his term,Simon performed Anderson’s duties. She also served as Deputy Mayor of Liverpool from 2018 to 2021.
Joanne Marie Anderson is a British Labour Party politician who served as the second and final directly elected Mayor of Liverpool from 2021 to 2023. She previously served as the Liverpool City Councillor for the Princes Park ward from October 2019 to May 2021. She was the first woman to be Mayor of the city and the first black woman to be a directly elected mayor in the UK. Anderson left office in May 2023 at the end of her term.
Emily Elizabeth Spurrell is a British politician serving as Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside since 2021. A member of the Labour Party and Co-operative Party,she served as a member of Liverpool City Council from 2012 to 2021.
The 2022 Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 5 May 2022. One third of councillors —15 out of 45 —on Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council were elected. The election took place alongside other local elections across the United Kingdom.
The 2023 Liverpool City Council election took place on 4 May 2023 to elect members of Liverpool City Council. Following a Boundary Review by The Local Government Boundary Commission for England,the size of the council was reduced from 90 to 85 seats with a change from three-member seats,elected in thirds,three years out of every four,following the British Government instigated Best Value Inspection Report which led to the appointment by the government of Commissioners and the subsequent boundary review for Council Wards in Liverpool which the government initiated with the proviso that the number of councillors be reduced and the predominant number of wards be reduced to single members with all-up elections every four years. The election also marked the end of Liverpool's directly-elected mayoralty. After the election the council reverted to having a leader of the council chosen from amongst the councillors instead. Labour retained control of the council and their group leader Liam Robinson became leader of the council after the election.
