Liga II is the second level women's football league in Romania. A second tier women's football competition was first created in 1990 under the name Divizia B. After the fall of communism, organised women's football started to take off, and the founded clubs were distributed into 2 leagues - Divizia A with 12 teams and Divizia B with 30 teams grouped into 3 series, following a tournament called Cupa Libertății. [1] Some time after, the number women's clubs declined, and the division was disbanded.

The second-level league was reintroduced starting with the 2013–14 season, when it formally received the name Liga I, following the introduction of Superliga as the top-tier league. However, as of the 2017–18 season, it was rebranded as Liga II, since the Superliga brand was quietly dropped altogether. [2]

Format

Since its reintroduction in 2013, Liga II has had two parallel regional divisions (series). Second teams of clubs in the top league cannot promote.

The 2020-21 season has had three parallel regional divisions (groups) with the group's winner teams (CSS Târgoviște, Ladies Târgu Mureș, Dream Team Bucharest) qualifying for promotional play-off as well as the best second team (ACS United Bihor). [3] The matches in the play-off for promotion to the Women's League 1 will be played in a single round, resulting in three games for each team, the first two ranked will be promoted to Liga 1 Feminin. [4]

Winners

The following is a list of all Romanian women's second-tier football league winners since its reintroduction in 2013. The first place is declared the champion of the series, promotes to Liga I, and is presented with a trophy. The top three teams currently also receive gold, silver and bronze medals from the Romanian Football Federation. Promoted teams are denoted in italics.

Liga IV Mureș, commonly known as Liga IV Elite, is the regional Liga IV football division for clubs in Mureș County, România, the fourth tier of the Romanian football league system. It is organized by the County Football Association and is competed amongst 16 teams, the winner is promoted to Liga III after a promotion play-off. The number of teams that are relegated from the Liga IV – Mureș will vary, depending on the number of teams relegated from the Liga III.

The 2020–21 Liga I was the 31st season of the top level women's football league of the Romanian football league system. Since the previous season, the league was supposed to be temporarily expanded from 12 to 14 teams, for just this season, since the 2019–20 Coronavirus pandemic forced an early finish to the 2019–20 women's football season in Romania. As such, the 14 teams would have competed in a double round-robin of 26 stages, for a total of 182 matches. Teams ranked 13th and 14th at the end of the season would have relegated, while those ranked 11th and 12th would have faced two teams from the 2020–21 Liga II in play-offs for the 2021–22 Liga I. Round 1 was scheduled to begin on 23 August 2020, but was postponed until 6 September 2020.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2019 Cupa României Final (women's football)</span> Football match

The 2019 Cupa României Final was the 16th Romanian football women's cup final, the final match of the 2018–19 Cupa României. It was played at Stadionul Trans-Sil in Târgu Mureș, on 31 May 2019, contested by Fortuna Becicherecu Mic and Vasas Femina Odorheiu Secuiesc. Vasas Femina won the match 5–0, with a hat-trick from Carolina Țabur and one goal from each Rita Mitri and Krisztina Benő in only the fourth time a team has scored five goals or won by at least a five-goal margin in a cup final. The win brought Vasas its first major trophy, making it only the 7th club to win the Romanian Women's Cup.

The 2019–20 Liga II is the 7th season, since its reintroduction in 2013, of the second level women's football league of the Romanian football league system. The number of teams was reduced from 16 to 14. Therefore, 14 teams divided in 2 series were to play in the competition that consists of a double round-robin lasting 12 stages, totaling 84 matches. Since one team withdrew before the start of the competition, the total number of matches to be played became 72. However, only the first half of the season was played, until the season was frozen due to the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic.

The 2018–19 Liga II was the 6th season, since its reintroduction in 2013, of the second level women's football league of the Romanian football league system. 16 teams divided in 2 series played in the competition that consisted of a double round-robin lasting 14 stages, totaling 112 matches. In addition, a two-legged play-off was played to determine one more promoted team at the end of the season, since CFR Timișoara withdrew from Liga I and vacated a place.

Since the previous season, the second tier league was renamed from Liga I to Liga II, since the top tier got renamed again to Liga I. 16 teams divided in 2 series played in the competition that consisted of a double round-robin lasting 14 stages, totaling 112 matches.

The 2022–23 Liga I is the 33rd season of the top level women's football league of the Romanian football league system. 12 teams will play a one legged-round robin. The top 6 teams progress then to the play-offs, while the bottom 6 teams to the play-out, where a two-legged round-robin will take place. Teams ranked 11 and 12 will relegate directly to the 2023–24 Liga II.

Clubul Sportiv Unirea Ungheni 2018, also known as Unirea Ungheni, or just Unirea is a Romanian football club based in Ungheni, Mureș County, which currently plays in Liga II, the second tier of the Romanian football. The club promoted in the second division at the end of the 2023–24 season after beating Gloria Bistrița-Năsăud in the promotion play-off.
