Critical reception

Matt Whalley of AllMusic gave the album 4.5 stars out of 5 and called it "a downtempo album with a unique style." [1] He said, "Fat Jon uses all the elements of a generic downtempo album but does it with a deliberate style and to greater effect." [1] Jon Freer of XLR8R said, "Lightweight Heavy merges the hopped-up swagger of blunted beats with ear-pleasing and beautiful melodies." [3] He described it as "a commendable album full of slow-stepping, melody-rich cuts, steeped in instrumental hip-hop's teapot." [3]

Jon Erin Marshall, better known by his stage name Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician, is an American hip hop producer and rapper from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is a member of the American hip-hop group Five Deez. He is also one half of 3582 with J. Rawls, one half of Rebel Clique with vocalist Amleset Solomon, and one half of Beautiful Killing Machine with Sonic Brown of Five Deez. Fat Jon is also credited as part of the production team that scored the music for the anime series Samurai Champloo. He currently resides in Frankfurt, Germany.

Bass Is Maternal is the debut studio album by Bristolian production duo Smith & Mighty, released by More Rockers in 1995. The album was recorded in 1989 for ffrr/London Records, who had signed the duo after they had built up underground success in their native city for their innovative Bristol underground scene sound, but the labels deemed the record unsuitable for release. Jason Daniel Rawls, better known by his stage name J. Rawls, is an American hip hop musician, producer, disc jockey (DJ), educator, and speaker born in Columbus, Ohio. He is best known for his work with Masta Ace, Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Because of his work with Black Star, a hip hop group composed of Mos Def and Talib Kweli, and their debut studio album, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, Rawls soon became an independent hip-hop main-stay. The album became a success and was part of the late 1990s underground hip-hop explosion.
