<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kathleen Freeman</span> American actress (1923–2001)

Kathleen Freeman was an American actress. In a career that started when she was only two years old performing occassionally on Vaudeville with her parents in an act known as the Van Gordons and continuing on tirelessly until just weeks before her death - where she went back to her roots in 2001; singing and performing on stage once again. This time, on Broadway in The Full Monty for which she received her second Tony nomination. During this rarely paralleled career; Kathleen worked as a performer in the 1920's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's 80's, 90's, and finished working as a performer in her ninth decade in 2001 with The Full Monty! Kathleen Freeman became a rare gem. She could claim something few others could when she left this Earth as a performer. She may have been known more as that character caomedic actress so many knew her as when she portrayed acerbic maids, secretaries, teachers, busybodies, nurses, and battle-axe neighbors and relatives. As I said, she was famous for almost every character invariably leading to comic effect. In film, she is perhaps best remembered for appearing in 12 Jerry Lewis comedies in the 1950's and 1960's, such as The Nutty Professor and The Ladies Man. Of special note, Jerry Lewis once stated in an interview that while he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in The Ladies Man; he had predetermined Kathleen as the only one that could fill the role of Kathleen's character in The Ladies Man and it had been so critical, such an integral part of the storyline and the way the movie would ultimately develop and come off and therefore affect how it would be received by the audience; that if Kathleen had been unavailable or had turned down the role, he probably would have scrapped the entire project. She was integral also as the nun known as The Penguin when it came to the success of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi's movie The Blues Brothers (1980). Miss Freeman was just that talented and unforgettable in everything she did. Kathleen Freeman worked in Vaudeville, Movies, Television, as a voice over artist in Movies, Television, and even in a video game in 1997, and then back on Broadway. She was a perfectionist and critical thinker as well. As such, it isn't surprising that she was also recognized for a well-received literary work she wrote on the Ethics for Theatre Performers. And yet, despite appearing in WELL over 200 credited performances and numerous uncredited ones, we are left to ask one simple question, "Why have the steps not been taken to find the distant relatives or waive the "relative approval" rule, if there are none living; AND PLACE A STAR on the Walk of Fame for a Star that gave all she had to us for most of seventy-six straight years of the seventy-eight she was alive?
