The school was opened by Lord Lucan on 24 May 1954 and educates pupils from the age of 11 to 16. It is named after the 19th-century poet Matthew Arnold, who lived in nearby Laleham.

The school had been rated outstanding by Ofsted, but as of January 2023 had not been inspected since conversion to an Academy on 10 December 2016. It is part of the Wessex Learning Trust with other schools in the Cheddar Valley area.
