Linda Jean Broadbelt is an American chemical engineer who is the Sarah Rebecca Roland Professor and associate dean for research of the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University. Her research considers kinetics modeling, polymerization and catalysis.
In 2019, she was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering for contributions to complex kinetic modeling, particularly for understanding the pathways by which hydrocarbons and polymers undergo pyrolysis.
Broadbelt was an undergraduate student in chemical and biomolecular engineering at Ohio State University. [1] [2] She was a graduate student in chemical engineering at the University of Delaware, where she studied the thermal stability of high performance polymers, [3] [4] working in the research group of Unidel Dan Rich Chair in Energy Michael Klein. [4]
Broadbelt develops simulations to better understand the kinetics of hydrocarbon chemistry and reacting systems. [5] [6] She joined the faculty at Northwestern University in 1994. [5] At Northwestern, she created computational models that automatically generate reaction mechanisms. In such models, molecules are represented as matrices, manipulations of which allow reactions to take place. [7] Broadbelt has studied biofuels, polymers and nanocomposite materials. [4]
In 2006, Broadbelt was awarded a fellowship from the Fulbright Program. Her fellowship allowed her to join Donna Blackmond at Imperial College London, where she investigated asymmetric catalysis and organocatalysts. In particular, Broadbelt made use of computational chemical methods to explore the asymmetric catalytic reactions that Blackmond worked on experimentally. [8]
Broadbelt was awarded a United States Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office multi-million dollar grant to create highly recyclable plastic. The plastics proposed by Broadbelt break down into harmless products. [9]
From 2009 to 2017, Broadbelt served as chair of the department of chemical and biological engineering at Northwestern. [10] In 2010, she was awarded a Sarah Rebecca Roland Professorship. [11] She joined the advisory board of the University of Delaware Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in 2010. [4] Broadbelt is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, where she has held various positions of leadership in the Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Division. [12] She serves on the editorial board of the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Molecular Systems Design & Engineering. [13] [14]
Gabor A. Somorjai is a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, and is a leading researcher in the field of surface chemistry and catalysis, especially the catalytic effects of metal surfaces on gas-phase reactions. For his contributions to the field, Somorjai won the Wolf Prize in Chemistry in 1998, the Linus Pauling Award in 2000, the National Medal of Science in 2002, the Priestley Medal in 2008, the 2010 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Basic Science and the NAS Award in Chemical Sciences in 2013. In April 2015, Somorjai was awarded the American Chemical Society's William H. Nichols Medal.

Tobin Jay Marks is an inorganic chemistry Professor, the Vladimir N. Zhenan Bao is a Chinese-born American chemical engineer. She serves as K. K. Lee Professor of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University, with courtesy appointments in Chemistry and Material Science and Engineering. She served as the Department Chair of Chemical Engineering from 2018 to 2022. Bao is known for her work on organic field-effect transistors and organic semiconductors, for applications including flexible electronics and electronic skin.
Nicholas A. Kotov is the Irving Langmuir Distinguished Professor of Chemical Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, USA. Prof. Nicholas Kotov demonstrated that the ability to self-organize into complex structures is the unifying property of all inorganic nanostructures. He has developed a family of bioinspired composite materials with a wide spectrum of properties that were previously unattainable in classical materials. These composite biomimetic materials are exemplified by his nacre-like ultrastrong yet transparent composites, enamel-like, stiff yet vibration-isolating composites, and cartilage-like membranes with both high strength and ion conductance.

Juan J. de Pablo is a chemical engineer, Liew Family professor in the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago and senior scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. In 2018, he was appointed Vice President for National Laboratories at the University of Chicago, a title which later expanded to include Science Strategy, Innovation and Global Initiatives in 2020. As of 2021, he is Executive Vice President for Science, Innovation, National Laboratories and Global Initiatives at the University of Chicago. Matthew V. Tirrell is an American chemical engineer. In 2011 he became the founding Pritzker Director and dean of the Institute for Molecular Engineering (IME) at the University of Chicago, in addition to serving as senior scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. Tirrell's research specializes in the manipulation and measurement of polymer surface properties, polyelectrolyte complexation, and biomedical nanoparticles.
Donna Blackmond is an American chemical engineer and the John C. Martin Endowed Chair in Chemistry at Scripps Research in La Jolla, CA. Her research focuses on prebiotic chemistry, the origin of biological homochirality, and kinetics and mechanisms of asymmetric catalytic reactions. Notable works include the development of Reaction Progress Kinetic Analysis (RPKA), analysis of non-linear effects of catalyst enantiopurity, biological homochirality and amino acid behavior.
William B. Tolman an American inorganic chemist focusing on the synthesis and characterization of model bioinorganic systems, and organometallic approaches towards polymer chemistry. He has served as Editor in Chief of the ACS journal Inorganic Chemistry, and as a Senior Investigator at the NSF Center for Sustainable Polymers. Tolman is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Chemical Society.
Natalie Stingelin, Fellow of the Materials Research Society and Royal Society of Chemistry, is a materials scientist and current chair of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Bordeaux and Imperial College.
