Seasons usually runs from September, followed by final series involving two highest-placed teams in each group. National champion gains qualification into the continental competition, AFC Challenge League. Most games are played at the Afghanistan Football Federation Stadium in Kabul.

Shaheen Asmayee or the Asmayee Falcons is a professional football club from Afghanistan. They play in the Afghanistan Champions League, representing Greater Kabul. In domestic football, the club has won a record 5 Afghan Premier League titles. They are the only team to have won consecutive titles, and have achieved it twice. In 2017 they became the first Afghan club to compete in the AFC Cup.

Toofan Harirod is a professional football club from Afghanistan. They play in the Afghanistan Champions League. It was founded in August 2012, by the creation of Afghan Premier League and its players were chosen through a casting-show called Maidan-E-Sabz. Based in the city of Herat, the club represents the provinces of Herat, Farah, Ghor, and Badghis in the western region of Afghanistan.

De Spin Ghar Bazan or the Spin Ghar Hawks, is a professional football team in Afghanistan. They play in the Afghan Premier League. It was founded in August 2012 during the creation of Afghan Premier League and its players have been chosen through a casting-show called Maidan-E-Sabz. Based in the city of Jalalabad, the club represents the provinces of Nangarhar, Laghman, Kapisa, Kunar and Nuristan in the eastern region of Afghanistan.

The 2013 Afghan Premier League was the second season of Afghan Premier League, the Afghan league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 2012. The season began on 22 August 2013 with the group stage and ended the season with the final on 11 October 2013. Toofaan Harirod head into the season as the defending champions. In the final, Shaheen Asmayee F.C. won their first title, beating Simorgh Alborz F.C., 3–1, in extra time.

The 2014 Afghan Premier League is the third season of Afghan Premier League, the Afghan league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 2012. The season started on 28 August 2014 with the group stage. Shaheen Asmayee enters the season as the defending champions, having defeated Simorgh Alborz 3–1 in the 2013 final. It was Shaheen's first title and championship, with Simorgh's second runner up title, after two seasons in a row making it to the final of the country's league football.

The 2014–15 Pakistan Premier League is the 60th season of Pakistan domestic football and the 11th season of the Pakistan Premier League. The league began on 20 September 2014. Khan Research Laboratories were the defending champions, having won the league championship for the last three seasons.

The 2015 Afghan Premier League is the fourth season of Afghan Premier League, the Afghan league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 2012. Shaheen Asmayee F.C. are the defending champions of the Premier League. The season started on 27 August 2015 with the 8 teams again in two groups. Shaheen Asmayee again reached the final of the Afghan Premier League and faced off against De Spin Ghar Bazan F.C. It was the first time De Spin Ghar reached the final of the league.

Zahir Khan is an Afghan cricketer. He made his Test match debut for Afghanistan in September 2019. He made his first-class debut for Afghanistan against Papua New Guinea in the 2015–17 ICC Intercontinental Cup on 21 November 2015. He represented Afghanistan in the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

The 2019 Afghan Premier League was the eighth season of Afghan Premier League, the Afghan league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 2012. The season commenced on 20 August 2019. Toofan Harirod F.C successfully defended their title by defeating Shaheen Asmayee F.C in the final, 1-0 a.e.t.
