General Hospital is an American television soap opera, airing on ABC. Created by Frank and Doris Hursley, the serial premiered on April 1, 1963. John Beradino, whose career began as American Major League Baseball player, originated the role of Steve Hardy in the serial's premiere episode and made his final appearance on April 23, 1996, [1] making him one of the longest-serving soap opera actors. The longest-running present cast members are Genie Francis and Scott Baldwin, having joined General Hospital as Laura Vining in February and Scott Baldwin in August 1977, respectively. [2] [3] Leslie Charleson, who portrayed Monica Quartermaine from August 17, 1977, to December 21, 2023, was previously the longest-tenured cast members, [4] [5] until her death in 2025. [6] [7] Rachel Ames was previously the series' longest-running cast member, portraying Audrey Hardy from 1964 to 2007, and making guest appearances in 2009 and 2013, the latter for the series' fiftieth anniversary. It is listed in Guinness World Records as the longest-running American soap opera in production, and the second in American history after Guiding Light. Concurrently, it is the world's third-longest-running scripted drama series in production after British serials The Archers and Coronation Street, as well as the world's second-longest-running televised soap opera still in production. General Hospital premiered on the ABC television network on April 1, 1963. General Hospital is the longest-running serial produced in Hollywood, and the longest-running entertainment program in ABC television history. It holds the record for most Daytime Emmy Awards for Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, with 14 wins.
Jack Stephen Burton is an American actor, best known for his portrayal of Jason Morgan on General Hospital from 1991 to 2012 and 2017 to 2021, again in March 2024, and Dylan McAvoy on The Young and the Restless from 2013 to 2017. He also voiced the character Cloud Strife in a wide range of Square Enix products, including Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and the Kingdom Hearts series. In 2017, Burton returned to General Hospital in the role of Jason Morgan using the alias of "Patient 6." Leslie Ann Charleson was an American actress, best known for her role as Monica Quartermaine on the ABC daytime soap opera General Hospital.
Ric Lansing is a fictional character from General Hospital, an American soap opera on the ABC network. The role has been portrayed by Rick Hearst, who joined the series on November 8, 2002, and exited the series on June 25, 2009. Following a five-year absence, Hearst returned to the series on February 24, 2014, with a hiatus from June to December of the same year. He exited the role in July 2016. In July 2024, it was announced Hearst would reprise the role, with Ric returning on August 22, 2024.
Maxie Jones is a fictional character from the ABC soap opera General Hospital. She is the eldest daughter of supercouple Frisco Jones and Felicia Cummings, raised most of her life by Mac Scorpio. Monica Quartermaine is a fictional character from General Hospital, an American soap opera on the ABC network, played from August 17, 1977, to December 21, 2023, by Leslie Charleson. She is a cardiologist at the eponymous hospital, and widow of physician Alan Quartermaine. The role was originated by Patsy Rahn in 1976, who played the role until showrunners replaced her with Charleson. At the time of Charleson's death in January 2025, her tenure in the role was one of the longest in American soap operas.
Philip Kiriakis is a character from Days of Our Lives, an American soap opera. Child actors portrayed the character of Philip until he was rapidly aged and returned under the portrayal of Brandon Tyler in October 1999. Tyler was quickly replaced by Jay Kenneth Johnson, who was in the role until leaving the show in December 2002. The character returned in May 2003 played by Kyle Brandt. After Brandt left the show in October 2006, Johnson returned to the role in January 2007 then left on April 20, 2011. In 2015, actor John-Paul Lavoisier was cast in the role; he was let go the following year, last appearing in December 2016. Introduced in September 1990, she was portrayed by several child actors until the character left the series in 1992, with further guest appearances in both 1996 and 1997. Beyond the Gates is an upcoming American television soap opera created by Michele Val Jean, which will begin broadcast on CBS in February 2025, as part of their daytime programming block. Set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., the serial will center around the Dupree family, a multi-generational affluent African-American family in the gated community of Fairmont Estates. The serial is the first daytime television soap opera to feature a predominately African-American cast since Generations (1989–1991) and the first new daytime soap to debut on a major American broadcast network since Passions in 1999. Production commenced in November 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia.
