The national rugby union team of the former East Germany played its first rugby international in 1951 against Romania. It never played in a Rugby World Cup, not being invited to the inaugural 1987 edition, the only one held while East Germany was in existence. The team played its last match in 1990, before merging with the West German rugby union team to form a single team representing all of Germany. In its 40-year history, the East German team never played its West German counterpart in a rugby test match.

Cardiff Arms Park, also known as The Arms Park, is situated in the centre of Cardiff, Wales. It is primarily a rugby union stadium, but it also has a bowling green. The Arms Park was host to the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1958, and hosted four games in the 1991 Rugby World Cup, including the third-place play-off. The Arms Park also hosted the inaugural Heineken Cup Final of 1995–96 and the following year in 1996–97.
The Namibia national rugby union team represents Namibia in men's international rugby union competitions nicknamed the Welwitschias, are a tier-two nation in the World Rugby tier system, and have participated in seven Rugby World Cup competitions since their first appearance in 1999.
