List of Hindu temples in Multan

There are several Hindu temples in Multan , a city in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The temples, known as Mandirs, exist because the population of Multan followed Hinduism, [1] Buddhism and tribal religions before the arrival of Islam. In 997 CE, Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi, took over the Ghaznavid dynasty empire established by his father, Sultan Sebuktegin, In 1005 he conquered the Hindu Shahis in Kabul in 1005, and followed it by the conquests of Punjab region. The Delhi Sultanate and later Mughal Empire ruled the region. There were two places in Multan from that period of considerable antiquity.

Sun Mandir

The most important place of the Hindu period was the "Sun Mandir". It was the most important place of worship throughout the South Asia as referred to in many books. It was situated on old Fort near Shah Rukn-e-Alam shrine. The ruins of Sun Mandir are located near the High Court of Multan. [1]

Suraj Kund

Another place was "Suraj Kund" (the pool of sun). It is about five miles to the south of Multan on the Bahawalpur Road. It was a pond 132 feet in diameter and 10 feet deep when full of water. Sawn Mal the Sikh Diwan surrounded it with an octagonal wall. It was a place of pilgrimage till 1947 and two fairs were held here annually. One on the 7th of the Vanishing moon of Bhadon, and the other on the 7th of the rising moon of Magh, the numbers having references to the seven hours of the Sun's Chariot, according to the Hindu belief of the seven Rishies. The temple of Narasimha built by Prahlada, known as Prahladpuri Temple. [2]

Narsinghpuri Temple

The temple of Narsinghpuri dedicated to Narasimha was originally inside the Multan Fort. Later, due to restrictions of timings for going inside the main area of fort, a temple of same name was built in main Sabz Mandi (Market) area of town. [3] [4] [5]

Krishna Mandir, Lahore

The Krishna Mandir is a Hindu temple (mandir) dedicated to the Hindu deity Krishna located in Ravi Road, opposite of Timber Market in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. In 2006, the temple became a centre of controversy due to media reports on its demolition which later turned out incorrect. In the contemporary era, it is one of two functional Hindu temples in Lahore, the other being Valmiki Mandir.

Kahuta Tehsil Tehsil in Punjab, Pakistan

Kahuta Tehsil is one of the seven tehsils (subdivisions) of Rawalpindi District in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Karachi is a Hindu temple that is the only Swaminarayan temple in Pakistan. The temple is notable for its size and frontage, over 32,306 square yards (27,012 m2) on the M. A. Jinnah Road in Karachi city. The temple celebrated its anniversary of 216 years in April 2004. It is believed that not only Hindus but also adherents of Islam visit the temple, which adds to its notability. There is a sacred cowshed within the premises of this temple. The temple is located at the centre of a Hindu neighbourhood in Karachi. The building that housed a dharmshala for visiting devotees has now been converted to the office of the City District Government.

Zafarwal, is a city and capital of Zafarwal Tehsil situated in the Narowal District of Punjab, Pakistan.

Shivaharkaray or Karavipur is a Shakti Peeth dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Durga, located near Parkai railway station, near Karachi, Pakistan. It is one of the two Shakti Peethas in Pakistan, other being Hinglaj Mata mandir Puranas describe that the three eyes of the Goddess fell here after she committed Sati. The Goddess is worshipped as Mahishasuramardini, or the slayer of the Demon Mahishasur. Her consort, the Hindu God Shiva, is worshipped in Ragi form as Krodhish, personification of anger. Shivaharkaray is third in the list of 51 Peethas identified in the Puranas.

Prahladpuri Temple Destroyed Hindu temple in Multan, Pakistan

Prahladpuri Temple was a Hindu temple located in Multan city of Punjab province in Pakistan, adjacent to the Shrine of Bahauddin Zakariya. Named after Prahlada, it is dedicated to the Hindu deity Narasimha. The temple is in ruins, since its destruction in 1992 by a Muslim mob in retaliation for the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, India and the site is currently owned by Evacuee Trust Property Board.

Pamwal Das Shiv Mandir at Pawaldass compound at Kakri Ground in Baghdadi area of Lyari Town. According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and The News International Muslim clerics have illegally turned this centuries-old historic temple into a Muslim pir and slaughterhouse for cows with the help of Baghdadi police after making series of attacks on Hindu families living in the area.

Emirate of Multan was a medieval Islamic kingdom in Punjab that existed around city of Multan, present-day Punjab, Pakistan. It was initially ruled by the Arab tribe of Banu Munabbih. In 959 AD, Ismaili Qarmatians gained control of the Emirate and in 1010 AD, it was conquered by Ghaznavid Empire.
