This is an annual award given by the team to the Texans player who exemplifies outstanding leadership, sportsmanship, work ethic and commitment to his teammates. Until 2008, this award was known as the Spirit of the Bull Award. In 2009 the award was renamed to honor Bruener, who had won the award for four straight years from 2005-2008.

The Harlon Hill Trophy is an award in American college football given to the individual selected as the most valuable player in NCAA Division II. The award is named for former University of North Alabama and National Football League player Harlon Hill. It was first given in 1986 to Jeff Bentrim of North Dakota State University. It is often considered to be the Division II equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.
Earl Christian Campbell, nicknamed "the Tyler Rose", is an American former football running back who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Houston Oilers and the New Orleans Saints. Known for his aggressive, punishing running style and ability to break tackles, Campbell gained recognition as one of the best power running backs in NFL history.
Wesley Carl Hopkins was an American professional football player who played as a safety for the Philadelphia Eagles during his entire 11-year National Football League career from 1983 through 1993. A walk-on for the Southern Methodist football team, he was first noticed by coaches and teammates during a team practice after he made a ferocious tackle on his college teammate and future Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson. Hopkins was named to the All-Conference selection in each of his last two seasons at SMU.
Lawrence Alexander Izzo is an American professional football coach and former player who is the special teams coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He played as a linebacker and special teamer in the NFL. He played college football for the Rice Owls, and was signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 1996. A three-time Pro Bowl selection and All-Pro selection, Izzo has also played for the New England Patriots. He won three Super Bowls during his time with the Patriots and one as an assistant special teams coordinator for the New York Giants.
Cory Michael Schlesinger is an American former professional football player who was a fullback for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He was selected by the Lions in the sixth round of the 1995 NFL Draft. He was selected to three Pro Bowls.
Mark Frederick Bruener is an American former professional football player who was a tight end in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Washington Huskies, earning All-American honors in 1993. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the 1995 NFL Draft with the 27th overall pick.
DeMeco Ryans is an American football coach and former linebacker who is the head coach for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). Ryans played college football at the University of Alabama, where he was named a unanimous All-American.
Steven Wayne Jackson is a former American football defensive back for the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans who is the secondary coach for the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by Houston in the third round in the 1991 NFL Draft. In 1999, the Titans made it to Super Bowl XXXIV in which Jackson appeared as a substitute; however, they lost to the Kurt Warner-led St. Louis Rams. In 2022, twenty-two years later, Jackson coached the Cincinnati Bengals secondary/cornerbacks in Super Bowl LVI, also losing to Los Angeles Rams.
Brian Patrick Cushing is an American former professional football player who was a linebacker for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the USC Trojans, and was selected by the Texans in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He played his entire nine-year career with Houston from 2009 to 2017 and became the team's all-time leading tackler.
